You nailed it!! From 1939 thru 2024 (84 years) the mayors of Houston were all Democrats with the exception of two. The Republicans held the office for a total of 14 years (1964-74 & 78-82). The Democrats have had control for the last 41 years. Just like every large American Blue run city their spending spree has finally caught up with them.
I saw this all the time when I worked for the city 87-2012.

When the Mayoral race was going on,I fully expected Houstonians would vote for Jackson Lee because of their past choices. I thought Jackson Lee would be the final nail in the coffin for Houston,and it would join the ranks of Chicago, D.C., Baltimore, Detroit etc. To my astonishment, Jackson Lee didn't make it. Then, when businesses close and residents leave who can afford to, tax revenues drop and the city can no longer _afford_ to catch thieves and send them to jail. Social spending also must decrease, so it becomes a vicious cycle round-and-round the bowl.

How many firefighters are there in Houston? $180M for 5 years of pay raises seems a little steep. This most likely means the actual guys at the fires will get $1.50 a year and some administrator who has never fought a fire will get $100K per year more

As an annexed citizen of Houston, I'm obviously unhappy about the rate hikes we're sure to see because of this, however, it's a breath of fresh air to see a guy like Whitmire, who was sworn in January 2024, at least attempt to be transparent after years of Turner's backroom dealings. With COH water's 9% annual increase beginning next month, it's going to be a rough time for our wallets.

I find it interesting that every argument starts with taxes are too high and they are wasting our money. The FY 2024 budget includes a 3% pay raise for municipal workers, including police, and a 6% raise for firefighters, the third pay raise in the last three years. The Houston Police Department and firefighters make up half of the city's operating budget, with police spending of $1.6 Billion and firefighters, $593 million. So, assuming that we do not want to make cuts there, where should we start cutting money? Roads, water and sewer, garbage pickup? Perhaps the courts and jails? So what services exactly do you think that we don't need from the City?
I’m glad he finally took care of the firefighters. You can’t ask people to risk their lives and then not pay them. Mayor Turner was wrong for that. Cut useless government bureaucracy. None of us can afford more taxes.

Houston real estate tax, at least when I lived there, was close to being a second mortgage on your home. So while they don't pay income tax, that real estate tax makes up for it. I hate to see the people there hit with more taxes. I like the idea of cutting non-essential government jobs, there are generally a lot of people doing nothing in government offices.

I've been living in Houston since 1955 can't take it anymore. I want to go somewhere where you can leave the house without worrying if it's going to be burglared. I've had over a dozen break-ins in the past 30 years. Ain't nobody been caught yet I don't even think they look for them. My $4,000 a year in taxes I'm going to be giving it to another community soon I'm leaving Houston.

You could not afford them to begin w/ and they should be first to be cut vs current needed expenses just to maintain. Granted, better efficiency and some outsourcing can certainly help. In truth, w/ office bldg downturns, which means 50% decrease to assessed values to all the downtown bldgs eventually, there is no easy solution....Heck, Houston has 1 of the HIGHEST Ad Valorem Tax in the US....

Cities often ignore maintenance costs when accepting road expansions, new suburbs, etc. city finances are a square foot game, the more asphalt, the more sprawl, they more money the city has to spend on maintenance every year forever. It doesn’t surprise me that Houston, being the poster child for car centric development, can’t pay for all that maintenance.

Literally this. I heard how messy the department gets with too many chiefs and not enough indians plus the employees they hire are always slow and old or too young to be competent.
It's not that there are too many government employees, it's that public infrastructure costs so much because it's so spread out. When you have a fairly low-density sprawling city, you need to upkeep thousands of miles of roads that serve less tax payers than it takes to maintain them. Houston can't afford its highways because it built too many highways. It's time to reconnect neighborhoods in ways that don't necessitate a car. It's far cheaper for the city to maintain a walking path than an 8 lane highway. Both can carry about the same number of people.
