- Brigham Young University basketball player Kaylee Smiler never expected that on her senior night, her friends and family would surprise her by performing a Haka, a ceremonial dance and an important part of their Maori traditions. NBC News’ José Díaz-Balart has the story in this week’s good news wrap-up.

Haka dance, legend lives on
Dance? Yeah. Nah.
Beautiful stories! Wish we could have seen the whole Haka! Thank you for some positivity!
Haka dance is so powerful, whenever I see one I get goosebumps. ❤
Man, I get goosebumps every time I see the Haka. So glad they keep those traditions alive
Don't come to America right now. They will squash any tradition you have as a culture.
Wow am I really seeing positive news being shared? Is this a new regular thing? Keep going!
Yes NBC does it on the weekends, at the end of the show😊
Not really. It's very cherry picked to distract you from what they should actually be informing you about. And I don't mean the misinformation & l!es they spew.
Wow NBC, some actual heartfelt and enduring stories…great work
The haka story was nice ❤
The narrator speaking during the Haka celebration dance upset me 😢 I only clicked the link to see that
🎯🎯🎯
What a great tribute to this young lady, her family, and cultural heritage!
There's something very spiritual about a Haka dance, I don't know what they are saying but I always get emotional watching them for some reasons.
Island pride.
Her father’s face when he hugged her💕 Hakas always make me tear up🌺
The Hakan dance is so awesome
You could never ask for a better family and friends.
Ok stop!! The goosebumps I got when she rang the bell🥹💛💛
🎉🎉🎉🎉 proud to be LDS Expressway and thank you for all the feel good stories
I LOVE EVERY BIT OF THIS!!!!
Many years ago I participated in a Haka dance. It was so special and I will never forget the experience.
Right on ❤❤❤❤ there we go Humans being Amazing
Very inspiring video.
Keep the positive news coming especially for the youth. They get so much negative press we need to celebrate the ones who persevered! Great stories ❤
Definitely tearing up 😢😅
I’m crying though this whole thing!!!! 😭😭😭😭
I love this!!!❤❤❤
I know that she was proud 😃👌💯
😭 beautiful
I love seeing the Hakka performed at BYU !
I swear... I'm not crying. 🥲❤ I was... y'know, just chopping onions... honestly. 🥲❤
This is the kind of news I want to see!
Awesome 👍😎
I like watching these kind of mews in the morning
Narrator needs to shut up and let me listen to the haka
I don’t know why, but anytime I watch a Haka dance, I cry.
I feel like it's because our culture lacks rituals of such positive power and deep, ancient meaning
@@martlettoo I couldn’t agree more. 🩷
So fun so heartfelt 💙
Congrats Laila!!❤😊
Im mormon and can say we do have fun all of the time. Life is hard but fun makes it better.
❤❤❤
❤
1:22 Buying a round, to celebrate!!
Finally…good news
Who’s cutting onions 😢
Haka is awesome
Maybe for the first few times you see it... then it's repetitive bs.
@@johndoe5061man you sound fun at parties
@@ik0la I don't think I'd enjoy one of your parties...
New Colors New Colors New Updates😮
💐💐💐🩷😊😊😊
Wonderful tribute
😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉😂🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
It's Maay Orr Eee.
Could her parents talk to my parents and convince them to visit me on the west coast?
There needs to be more positive new in this world
“It is for people…it is for people”…we in the west have lost our connection to this kind of community spirit and as a result turn a blind eye and are complicit to so many atrocities against “others”. 💔🤲🏼❤️✊🏼🇳🇿🥝🌿🌬️☁️
Mormons and Polynesians, goes together like PB&J
Haka is a war challenge
Not always
@rossdutton8390 It's a display to try to show dominance and produce fear. But it's also stupid because it doesn't do this unless you are the dominant force out of the competing sides.
Reminds me of the time University of Hawaii was penalized 15 yards for performing their haka before the game even started.
What?
The All-Blacks perform their Haka on the field immediately before every international game. It’s even televised.
@shmick6079 search on UA-cam for UH penalized for doing the haka, they were doing it for their fans and themselves, and the game didn't even start yet, but were penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct at the opening kickoff.
An Australian Hawaiian that's dope 😊
By their fruits ye shall know them. -Jesus
These classroom surprises are nice, but kinda disruptive. Seems like they're too performative at this point
Sometimes I wonder what if Americans embraced the native heritage
Just don’t do it in front of the mens USA basketball team
Why has the Haka degenerated into a dance that anyone who wants to can do it? Its wrong that any one who is not a Maori is allowed to do this and just being a New Zealender doesnt count.
ONCE WE WERE KINGS
What? No cries of cultural appropriation? Good, maybe things are coming back to normal.
Haka's look ridiculous. Not intimidating.
Gonna disagree on that one. Most people will actually.
@@beetlebob4675 I'm not
It’s ceremonial. It’s storytelling with a body. It’s human-created art. Not supposed to be “scary”in today’s society, friend.
@@suntiki33
Thank you. Explained it better than I wanted to.♥️ It's one of my favorite things. I first came across it in the behind-the-scenes extras for the extended edition of LoTR when I was like, 14.
The entire party of uruk-hai was played by a Maori stunt team. Imagine a haka, but done by orcs in full costume.😂😂
@suntiki33 that's a misrepresentation.Its a war dance.Developed to build adrenaline in fighters.
