As someone who has been point blank dumped by a paintball and airsoft gun, I can say that Airsoft is much more fun and less painful. I had to sit out for an hour and had my entire abdomen and ass be completely bruised and in pain for the next few days. Also you can shoot straight with an airsoft gun, unlike paintball lol.

I'm doing my firearms course in 2 weeks. But I am SO glad I got into Airsoft, because it taught me how to respect weapons and learn to follow the rules in a safer environment. The money is not a thing for me, but I am happy I got into Airsoft first because of all the learning I got to do. And once I have my PAL, I will continue to keep my Airsoft guns for fun :)

In Australia we don’t have Airsoft but the next one down and that is Gel Blasters. Very similar to airsoft but cheaper and less of a mess. I’d rather burn $20 of Gel Balls that lasts up to 6 hours of play time compared to the $20 of paying the Range fee that you already spent 4 hours driving to.

Guns are useful for many things, and are fun to shoot if you have a range to use. Being military, I get to train, shoot and clean guns with my unit every so often. Father owns a bolt action and that's all the gun any civilian really needs, and it's more than enough for my family.
I played airsoft about 20 times in the last year. Shooting range (minus range days with the army)? Only once.
I get to use airsoft guns to train myself and maintain my skills. My gas blowback M4 is realistic enough for me to do any procedure that mimics the real thing almost exactly. I have no appropriate gun range nearby (that I know of) for what I would like to do, but the airsoft fields are open almost every day.
I know not everyone is willing or able to join the military. However, I see so many people put in the effort to strategize, compete and, even more importantly, learn how to use their guns properly.
The experience may not be a visceral as using a real firearm, but the procedures and mindsets are the same.
    Safety and fun!
Also, "Just get a real gun" doesn't make you a safe or capable shooter. You need training, and airsoft is an excellent medium to learn a lot about firearms and such, especially when you have people with the knowhow and training available, and a more or less forgiving environment that promotes trial and error with some painful, but far from deadly, consequences.
    Cheers, eh!

I buy airsoft or BB gun to train for my real gun. I appreciate the realism to fit in my holsters so I can train during quarantine.

I love the analogy of comparing a motorcycle to a high-end bicycle. Please do more of these types of discussions!
On a personal take, planking gets boring so I never understood the ROI on purchasing a real gun. The fun in airsoft are the creative games played on the field. That, and it's probably easier to explain why you own an airsoft gun verses the real thing to people Lol.

Admittedly I fall into the "why not buy a real gun" camp. Not to look down on airsoft, I've just been a collector/enthusiast of firearms for a long time so I guess for me it's hard to spend equivalent amounts of money on airsoft when I could cross another firearm off my list.
That being said. I'm not an airsoft player, I think the only airsoft gun I have is an old spring pistol and a couple pellet guns. But i have played airsoft on a field a couple of times. And it was a lot of fun. I played with a buddy of mine who was also ex military and there was a certain amount of satisfaction that came from absolutely destroying the other teams. I've done paintball too but I actually liked airsoft even better. The guns used are obviously much closer to the real thing than paintball guns and you dont have all that damn paint all over your clothes afterwards.

With 5.56 being in a perpetual state of scalping now, every time I shoot my real shit I can't help but think about the fact that that's the sound of up to 3/4 of a dollar per shot explosively combusting. That and the constant controversy around them kinda kills the fun of one after a while. The airsoft stuff is so much cheaper and more fun in all actuality, especially my GBB.

i own real guns, and i own airsoft guns , ive spent around 1500 dollars on 5 real guns. they all sit in a dusty corner and i shoot them maybe 4 times a year. the ammo is expensive and goes fast, and i also have to drive 30 minutes out of town to even shoot them.
on the other hand, i have spend about 1100 dollars on 3 airsoft guns. i can play with them and leave them around my house with out having to worry about all the regulations and safe practices that you would have with a real gun. i can shoot them in my house or my back yard. and of course the best part is battling your friends.
i am literally temped to just sell my real guns, except for maybe one of them. and invest in more airsoft.

I had a "discussion" with a friend who has a collection of real guns and always gave me $hit for using "toy" Airsoft Guns. I've gone shooting with him and he's a good marksman...at a stationary "helpless" target. That paper target isn't finding cover, isn't dodging...and isn't firing back. I'm sure the reason for having guns by most gun owners is for self defense or home defense, yet will your intruder stand still for you and be unarmed? You experience no fear or movement and objective adrenaline at the range, just the thrill of shooting a loud deadly weapon that you can't legally shoot at anyone...the whole reason "Guns" exist. I could have argued further but he eventually agreed, even when tactical shooting, there's never anything shooting back like BB's or Paintballs (for safety reasons too). So he did the smartest thing, bought Airsoft replicas of his real guns and now he loves to play open games. Complete training, and he admits a lot more fun. (also he can shoot his Airsoft Guns in his basement, something he could NEVER do with his real guns..)

Just like anything else, airsoft is a hobby. For most people, buying and shooting guns is also a hobby. Sure, firearms have legitimate practical applications outside of being a hobby. I can do something with the aforementioned products that I can't (legally) do with a real gun, which is shoot people.

Sold pretty much all of my airsoft guns when I moved over to real steel two years ago. Airsoft may be cheaper to get into but the re-sale value is terrible. Lost maybe 50% when I sold my airsoft guns but the most I've ever lost on a real steel is 20%. Most of my guns will increase in value over time (milsurps/rare guns) and I strategically buy guns that have a good resell value for that reason. Another plus is that I can use real steel for more than just for fun such as hunting. If I'm going to sink a lot of my time into anything I want it to bring more to the table than just my enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, I still believe airsoft is amazing for running dry fire drills and having fun with friends but owning real steel to me is just more practical.

I know they’re toys. Expensive toys. But they’re for playing a game. Guns are tools. I own two tools. They generally sit in a safe for when I need to access those tools. They have a purpose. Most people playing airsoft don’t exactly even know how to hold their guns right, let alone the use them safely at all times. It would’ve made more sense is if the point was made that if you study firearms safety and how to operate your weapon replica, you’ll be able to have an easier time transitioning to the real thing. The guy in the TREX arms video did exactly that. Don’t use airsoft as a base for your firearms training.

No ATF restrictions on airsoft I can put a vertical foregrip on a pistol and have a rifle with a stock and a barrel that is 8 inches without being arrested airsoft is just better

The reason I say “why not get a real gun at that price range?” Is because some airsoft AR Fifteens cost 500 or more. Why not just get an actual AR which you can get at that 500$ plus dollar range. I understand if you live outside the US it’s impossible to own real guns so I understand that perspective but here in the US I find it crazy some people spend so much on a airsoft gun. Maybe it’s a hobby for some people but for me I just use a 160$ dollar airsoft AR to train in places I can’t with a actual one or warmup before using a real one.

If a lower end airsoft gun does the job for you then it sounds like you found your ideal use case :) Also consider that it's because of the primary player base putting money into the industry that allowed the once universally expensive airsoft gun, to be as affordable as your 160 dollar one.

I always say I like real guns and I own several, but generally it is frowned upon when you shoot your friends with them.

I'm not a lawyer but I think it might be illegal to shoot someone with a real gun on the field?
I don't know, someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Sad truth is cause it's not legal to own a gun in my country. Since I resigned from the army after 10 years of service I really miss shooting real guns.

I don't like it when people say you should just buy a real gun. Most people play airsoft because it's a sport and they might want nice equipment to play the sport. If they wanted to shoot targets then yes, buy a real gun but if you want to play airsoft with a nice airsoft gun you can't do that if you spent it on a real gun.

I own only gasblowback airsoft guns for simulation and gun handling first ,air IPSC and IDPA second.
Sure that we in Sweden are allowed to get permit to own guns, only if you have evidence or proof of membership on frequent fireams competitive shooting sports clubs any kind.
That prevent me to keep if I own real fireams, when I decide to end my membership because of budget reason. So I can't put the competitive shooting on hold to save money enough to compete, the Swedish Police will begin knocking on your door. Also if you purchase fireams, by law you need a safe. Even the second hand used safes are to expensive for me.
With airsoft gun you don't need mentions above. As long you are of 18 years of age, the max muzzle velocity are met by the law and not brandish around with it in public.
Save money and by law are parts of what reasons that some don't just buy a real gun.
Not all country have lenient weapon laws as US has.

Airsoft: Shoot at friends, shoot in backyard, cheap ammo
Real Steal: Driving to the range, maintenance, expensive ammo. :c

Yea similar to Canada, we have very strict laws about guns (yea airsoft guns as well, even need weapon permit for airsoft here). But still easier to get and use as real guns and the price, as you said.. Our ranges for real guns are not that great either, shooting on steel is not allowed, so forget even IPSC or any other variant of tactical shooting with (I understand why, because Benelux is so small, we are also limited for such Events, simply by space) real guns. So here Airsoft is also a better way to train, even for real weapon use. And well, it's maybe not the best idea, to shoot your friends in the face with a real gun, with airsoft it's part of the fun and everybody laughs and respects a good fun game. And well, when it's needed to rise the level of realism in Airsoft, get replicas and gear, wich have the same handling and weight as the real stuff.

    • @bronkobrumby776

We need for all shit a permit: Swords, daggers, lances, spear e.t.c no matter if dull, for fencing or sharp, crossbows over 30lbs are illegal and you need a special permit and a very good reason to have one. powder weapons of any kind and any airguns which look like a real gun (so all airsoft guns), standard paintball guns (don't looks like a real gun, RAM's need a permit, because of to many similarities to real guns) are free as long as it stays under 7.5 joules. I just cannot have an EU wide blue card to transport the weapons ofer the borders, because technical no FIRE weapons, but national in my home country, i need a permit. But compared to real guns, you don't need a membership on a range to be able to get the permit for airsoft, but after all, it's the same permit: "Porte d'armes du sport" so a permit for sport weapons.

I have alot of real guns but the reason I love airsoft is the laws in my state crappy ny, so many things I can have in airsoft I cant have with real guns, full auto,a sbr, telescoping stocks,a flash hider, a muzzle break, a bayonet lug, standard magazines. Most everything. Most people say move ... it sounds so easy to them, leave my family, give up my job I've had for 18 years, sell my house & all the hard work I've put into it & my land. I would love to move pay my way or stop giving me shitty advice! Oh & I can shoot people legally with a airsoft. That's why I love airsoft

Just recently bought my first airsoft gun, and what it means to me is being able to still get trigger time. As we have had riots lawlessness and the pandemic here in the USA we have a wave of new first time firearm owners wanting to be able to protect themselves. Add that to the already high demand for ammunition and now we have a shortage. With prices for .223 hitting $1 a round, it allows me to continue shooting without dipping into my stored ammo and saving me a significant amount of money, all while practicing fundamentals and running some fun drills just without the bang.
