She could do opera if she wanted. When you watch her interviews though, she made it clear even before entering Julliard that she wanted to end up on Broadway.
I was lucky enough to have classes with and work with Zoe in graduate school. She was imminent scholar at Florida Atlantic University in the late 80's early 90's. She's very genuine which comes through in her performing.

That teacher was the great Maria Callas! I had the wonderful opportunity of seeing her in a performance of Master Class. I doubt with Andrea was a part of it, but I thought Zoe Caldwell was brilliant!

But chose Broadway and musicals instead..Some singers like Kelli O Hara Paulo Szott Nathan Gunn and Victoria Clark sing both opera and musicals.But Audra Mc Donald chose to.be an actress more than an.operatic singer Both Zoe and Audra received Tony Awards for their performances in Master Class

She didn't sound like a dramatic soprano when she did Dreamgirls, Marie Christine or 110 in the shade. I think Rebecca Cain is a dramatic soprano (don't quote me on that) and she was amazing as Christine.

Maybe she didn't play the most accurate Callas, but her acting from the various clips I've seen really sold the play in ways other actresses could not. Some times one needs to deviate for dramatic effect and for it to really work on stage with a live audience.
There is a 4 (or maybe 3) cd set drawn from tapes that were made from the actual Callas Juilliard master classes and released on the Angel/EMI label. It mentions the work she did behind the scenes to ready herself for performing again and these classes were part of the work since the focus would not be totally on her. The cd set includes the student singing, along with the Callas comments (but nothing about not having a ‘look’) and then Callas singing the same aria but from a complete recording or studio recital.
George Simmel: Please, in these times, get a tight grip and understand that my comment is one made by the Callas character. Please see photos of the before and after Callas when she lost weight. She modeled herself after Audrey Hepburn and BOTH definitely had a look. The only negative is that only Zoe Caldwell attempted an accent of American, Greek tinged Queen’s English when she/Callas speaks.

For anyone who thinks that Ms. Audra McDonald can't perform "high opera", here's proof positive that her talent is unmatched as an artist.

Zoe Caldwell is intimidating. You have to be on your toes and have your part really well prepared--not just vocally but emotionally as well.

Ernesto Sánchez , Patti LuPone was far from Bootleg. Saw her 3 times in the role. Saw Dixie Carter too who blew it out of the water.
