Born and raised in L.A., had a happy life growing up in Long Beach. I Loved every corner of California. Navy took me from CA for many years and when I got orders back there in 1984 it had changed so drastically I couldn't recognize the state I grew up in. I recently flew back to San Diego for a grandniece's wedding, and even though the I-15 corridor has gotten unbelievably built up and the population taxed and priced outta their homes, the state itself has the same appeal it had when I was younger. I'd love to set the clock back on its politics, because the state itself is still beautiful and has everything every other state has put together. I miss California; but in the shape it's in today I could never move back.

Amazing vintage 8mm footage Mackenzie Some of LA reminded me of parts of downtown Orlando Florida just after Disney World had opened up and just before the construction boom of the mid 80s when I left. I was 2 in 1977 too, don’t remember it but I actually have memories from 1979, like going to Ralph’s grocery store and hearing Supertramp on the store radio, lol
Ah, yes, 1977. I grew up in Beverly Hills, so you're showing my old stomping grounds. That was the year I started attending BHHS.
I was a teen-ager who rode my bicycle daily in the Pico Blvd/Beverly Drive area during the 1970s. Good memories!!
In the 70's, I never would have thought I would miss them.
But, wow I sure do !
Me too
Great movie, and great memories. Thanks for sharing! I had that same Star Wars shirt! LA was my playground as a teenager in '77. Good times.
The music goes perfectly with this video. I was a young kid in south OC, not LA, in '77 but can remember the culture surprisingly well.
Ditto.
Thank You! Your footage captures so many aspects of Los Angeles that are gone forever.
You're very welcome.
Growing up as a young kid in New Jersey in the late ‘70s and watching “CHiPs” I was absolutely convinced that Southern California was THE coolest place on Earth. Toured out there with a band in the late ‘90s and my suspicions were confirmed - it’s magical.

Before everything went to hell. I truly wish I could just walk in to this video and never, ever come back.
Talked to a friend of mine the other day who grew up in LA in the late 70s & early 80s and remembers seeing ‘CHiPs,’ ‘Starsky & Hutch,’ ‘Greatest American Hero’ & ‘Incredible Hulk’ being filmed on location.
I was 17 and living in Santa Monica in 1977. I love seeing these pics. It is funny, just VW's and American cars on the road. The air looks real smoggy.
There were a few "ricers" here and there..
The year I graduated high school from Palmdale about 50 miles north of LA. Brings back great memories of a different California then what it is today. I remember FM radio KMET...."The MIghty Met"......
At 1:48 is the old train tracks. North and South Santa Monica blvd. are on either side. When I worked at the Troubadour we use to run outside and slap the train as it lumbered by, accompanied by Steve Martin.
I was a kid back in 1977 and remember riding the RTD bus along Santa Monica Blvd from West LA to the beach for just 25 cents.

Little did those fireman in the fire truck know that 42 years later, they would be seen by someone through a phone
Yes they had this weird idea back then that phones were used for talking to friends and cameras took photographs
One of my best friends had that car; 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass. He got it for high school graduation. The 70s and 80s were a magical time if you were young.

One thing I miss from that time is record stores. The one I went to had records, tapes, books, and merchandise in one room and guitars, keyboards, & drum kits in the other.
They just shut down Amoeba.

No way, man. KROQ ftw...
@@fredgarvinMP KROQ played punk rock and new wave not oldies but yes it was a good station.
KROQ was a county station before it changed to new wave.
KISS FM was good also.

I grew up on the punk/new wave KROQ but them being a country station was before my time. KRLA was good too. Not too much into KIIS. I could tolerate KLOS and K-EARTH 101 though. Have a good day!
@@fredgarvinMP Agree I'm not a KISS fan either. I do like K-Earth music they are playing today.
In 1977 I was 14 most everyone I hangout with liked the oldies. I was in to skateboarding then and now I'm in my mid 50s I still can ride surprisingly lol

Never cared much for them. Some of kinda of made fun of the make-up bit. My sister like the band's music.
The 76 Trans Am made me miss my 77 T/A. I miss those days.I miss those gas prices. Things were simpler back then. All the great music and concerts I went to.
I miss those GOOD wages, $10/hour
I lived in Long Beach in '77. I would take the bus up to the Strip on weekends and see bands at the Roxy,
the Whisky, and shows at the Forum, Santa Monica Civic Center, like Bob Marley, Rory Gallagher, Frank Zappa.
Then I moved to West Hollywood in '79 for a year and worked in Century City in one of the buildings at 1:31.
I remember hitchiking down Santa Monica Blvd to get to work during a bus strike, and I remember the gas shortage
where you could only buy gas on odd/even days, according to the number on your license plate.

Awesome! I was living in Eagle Rock during the 70s. I recall when they were constructing the Glendale fwy to Echo Park area in the late 70s. We used to sneak in during the weekends and literally play on the freeway...

Hi, I'm so glad that you enjoyed my movie.
Just checked up on all the license plates in this clip. "700 KFT" (a normal passenger plate, not personalized) was still registered to that 1974 Dodge Dart (at 3:47) until at least 2002 when it had its last smog check! It could still even be on the road, since pre-1976 cars are no longer required to pass smog checks.
Moved out that way in 79 when I was 9 years old. With my mom and brother.
I loved seeing the twin towers in Century City. I've worked there since the 90's. The only thing I remember about 1977 was seeing Star Wars in the theater as a 5 year old. Good times.
Ikr? Worked there off and on since 1978. Still there. No longer suits and dresses.
I'm old enough to remember when I was a kid visibility was less than a mile because of the smog. That's why I don't complain about the smog regulations that we have now.
My pops came to LA in ‘78. I followed in ‘79 at four. I remember all the songs, cars, styles and places of that time. Memories
I love L.A. 70s, 80s, 90s, now, I don't care, L.A remains the most beautiful city in my heart
Nice to see no one is talking on the phone while walking on the street!
They had mobile phones then just cost a great deal

Yes...smoggy we have. But no Donald Trump 😆.
chemie chemie not like the old days. My teacher in the 90s told me that in the 60s and 70s the smog was so bad that she had lived in LA for years before she even realized that there were mountains just a few miles north of the city. Nowadays, most days you can see those mountains, but you do get those bad days here and there.
My favorite part is the girl with the Star Wars shirt on
Julio Diaz sounds so cheesy
She should’ve flashed us some real headlights
Kind of a woof, woof, seen better..
You probably couldn't afford it! I own my own home in Orange County since 1985, couldn't buy it today.

Amazing vintage 8mm footage Mackenzie Some of LA reminded me of parts of downtown Orlando Florida just after Disney World had opened up and just before the construction boom of the mid 80s when I left. Both cities had both a busy yet laid back vibe of the time. The fire truck opening scene reminded me of watching the TV show Emergency back in the late 70s great times. Love your old films they are a real treasure!

So many memories, and changes. I was glad they filmed the gas prices, and so many other things that aren't around anymore. However, Factors Deli is still open, and im still buying Sees Candy. The Star Wars Tshirt is cool, and the lady wearing it seems like a nice person with natural beauty.
On a darker note, wasn’t this during the period the ‘Hillside Stranglers’ were most active and getting a lot of news coverage? Not to mention a number of active ‘serials’ simultaneously wreaking havoc in the hills, canyons and on the freeways and byways of the City of Angels?
