Joshua, you are amazing. After watching your videos, I've progressed from "No way, in hell..." to "I think I can I think I can..." to fully on, "here, take my money, I'm buying a Quad!!" Still saving my pennies, but will definitely use your links (and send you some cash) when I'm ready to take the plunge. Thank you!!
We already know most of the stuff in these series from older content, but I still learn a lot about some details in this series! Great stuff! Wish someone did this as elaborate for inav as well
Josh, many thanks for all your great videos. I learned a lot from them about drones, their construction and configuration. I have one note regarding the VTX configuration video. I had a problem myself to properly configure the Rush Tank Ulimate II (it did not want to change the channels and transmitter power using the BF settings - it could only be done using the buttons). Well, the bug is included in the Tanks BF 4.3 Presets. The power levels are listed there according to Smartaudio Protocol 2.1, which standard does not work properly with the receiver at all. It has the values 14, 23, 27, 29 which is wrong and therefore Smartaudio does not work! The power level values must be set as for you, ie: 0, 1, 2, 3 (Smartaudio Protocol 2.0) and then EVERYTHING works properly. It took me a long time to figure it out, so I tell other beginners to do just that.
One advice: github has a "raw" button to show a file as a webpage, without the github layout, just the file. You can then use ctrl+a to select the whole page and use ctrl+c to copy the contents without all the line numbers or other stuff that github usually shows ;)

These are great videos JB!! Question for you gurus. I have a Speedybee TX800 VTX that runs on 5V. This is my first build and put it on the FC 9V pad. Did I fry my VTX? I never saw, heard, or smelled anything but my VTX light doesn't come on and Betaflight has Device Ready = No. I do have my 4S battery plugged and checked the pad output with multimeter at 5V. Smokestopper has always been green. Thanks!
Thank you, I'm gonna learn something this minute. Binge watching this series, now I open beta flight smiling, know where to go and what buttons to push and NOT to push. But my presets tab is empty? No presets, did you mention how to load these? Thanks
Regarding PIT mode, just yesterday I spent a few hours playing with it on my Mobula 6. I had a reverse problem, the PIT mode wouldn't turn off. Turns out on the Mobula VTX you can't toggle pit mode from the configurator. I had to use the OSD and go to FEATURES>VTX>CONFIG>OP MODEL and here you can choose RACE or FREE mode. Race is PIT mode on startup (until first arm), free is no PIT mode. After selecting race mode you also need to choose PIT mode type (PIR or POR) and then after saving reboot the FC and VTX
Very helpful series so far ,thanks a lot. off topic for this video I know, in my narrow, humble view Betaflight in 4.3 (i'm at rc6) didn't make a great job when it comes to pid sliders and filters. to me it completely ruined what I was at least able to achieve in previous versions, no use to add a lot of stuff if it brings such lots of misery. one example, you got a barely 1 - 1.5 y old quad, say your fc dies, you replace it with an identical one, you flash it to 4.3 rc6 but all you got from manufacturer (or your backup) file with the best tunes for this quad but it's still in 4.2, after firmware flash you go to cli, execute the file, it doesn't even swallow the pids, aou need to disable their s***** sliders and re execute and it will swallow most of it, the pids etc but even then you still 52 lines it doesn't take, errors mostly that it doesn't know the variable name and those are all about f****** filters. After that can't reactivate filters, it's a mess. The compatibility tool for migration, I know about it, gave it a shot, but ain't nobody got time for that who has a life. Tried my best to make a head and tail out of the lines it didn't take and try to input them manually (those I found) in the bf gui, but rekon7 then had vibrating motors, getting hot, unflyable, dangerous annoying as hell, almost killed my motors and esc, got bored with it, returned to 4.2 flashed my backup and everything's fine with the quad now, honestly bf I could do and say things to them I'd rather not mention.
You definitely can't paste a 4.2 CLI dump right into 4.3. That's always been the case with updated releases. If your complaint about 4.3 is, the manufacturer hasn't released a 4.3 CLI dump for your quad, that's hardly Betaflight's fault :-( But the solution is, as you did, to go back to 4.2.
@@JoshuaBardwell I get what you're saying. Just to make it clear, didn't mean any disrespect against you, in fact got the outer most respect, gratitude and admiration for you, but the reality is manufacturers won't ever bother to do that except for the next / newer models and as any support always says first upgrade to newest version of OS to solve or improve this or that but that just won't happen unless you a. spend a no life time on it or b. just buy a new quad which is probably the intended omega towards mere mortals. It would just be nice if there was an easier way to upgrade bf so that at least what worked before keeps on working without too much hassle.

How does turtle mode arming work with low power disarm? Lets say I crash way out in a field, in some tall grass. I don't want to be armed because that spins the motors and they may burn out (would idle speed spinning burn out motors? I don't even know). So I disarm and the quad drops to 25 mw and I lose my video. What happens if I turn on turtle mode and then arm again? Would it jump back up? I worry about this because a hot vtx could start fires in places like california pretty easily. If it is going to take me awhile to get to my quad and I am in a dry grass field I would be really scared of starting a fire under those circumstances but it would be nice to be able to pop the power back up intermittently. Kind of a dumb question I suppose. probably just better to put max power and min power on a switch somewhere, but with a turnigy evolution there were not that many switch options.
@@JoshuaBardwell Nice, seems like this would be the best way to do it then, it solves the issue of losing vtx signal, because as long as you have control link you should be able to just to into turtle mode and get it back anytime you want.
Regarding the vtx table, couldn't all vtx use the same table and just have factory unchecked for all the bands? then you would just have to enter the power levels it would seem to me.

Good info with great detail. I just wonder since 4.3.0 is pre-release how much of this will change when 4.3.0 is released? I've been testing 4.3 on 2 of my quads for several RCs now and I haven't had any issues. Overall I'm liking 4.3 so far but I'm finding that the 10.8 configurator(s) are kind of unstable. Then again, this is pre-release software.
Most of this hasn't changed since 4.2, except for configurator moving some items to different tabs. I don't think anything is likely to change since 4.3 is so close to final release.
JB, the Darwin 129 came with a VTX table on Betaflight but I think it’s stuck on 25 Mw, how can I tell if the other powers 200/600/800 that show on the OSD really Work? 🙏

Interesting thing about pit mode not working on some vtx's, I had betaflight 4.2 with pit mode working after power up, but after updating to 4.3 and migrating settings, it doesn't work anymore. Everything else works as it did in 4.2 except pit mode
I have a vtx that is supposed to go to 400mW but only goes to 200mW. Do I get the full 400 by adding another power level? It has three levels 0 1 2 as 25 100 200. So do I make it 4 levels to get to 400?

I looked on a program that shows all USB devices, and it shows up for a second, but then it goes away. Can anyone help me with this?
do i have to find the vtx table that must correspond exactly the vtx im using, or can i just use smart audio as the one im using supports smart audio???
Ok thank you, I found a vtx table for smart audio 2.0 and it seems to work. The goggles connect to the vtx but there is just a black screen and says battery full in the goggles. What is wrong? Could you please help me out on that.
Right, thanks a lot, I managed to sort out video. Now, yesterday I bound my reciver to the transmitter and everything was working in betaflight, but today the receiver doesn't turn on even when I plug the lipo in. I checked that the pad on the fc output the correct voltage to the receiver. There is no light on tue receiver and its rather hot. What shall I do???😥 Sorry for asking so many questions.
Hi,I have a weird problem with my quad. When i spin the motors in Betaflight all is fine, but when i arm them the start twitching veryhard and get hot. For me it seems like a pid proplem cause when i remove the fc and hold it in hand the problem is away and the motors spin rather smooth. I checked the motor orientation as spin direction multiple times such as the fc board orientation. I reflashed the firmware a few times. I even set the PID variables to 0 but nothing. I hope someone can help me. I think its just some dumb mistake
@@JoshuaBardwellthx for the tip. If Ich hold the quad very tight the twitching Shops. in your Video I saw that I can Check the different motorvibrations in betaflight. How much is to much ?
why do we bother with multi-band vtxs anymore? its such a hassle and complicates any button/led interface. i never use a band other than Raceband, so only having buttons for power and channel would make it a lot easier to design and use.
Pitmode and tables, the whole VTX thing with betaflight is a mess. This reason alone is worth DJI. There's no mixing and matching and downloading and hold button for 3second and count the flashes.
Dude, stop saying "The VTX table is complicated". Its not, and you're brainwashing people into being scared of it. What on earth is difficult about a table?
What I'm saying reflects the questions I get in my inbox from people who are having problems. I'm not brainwashing people. I'm reflecting the actual issues that people are having, that they ask me to help them solve. What's so difficult about a table? Knowing which table to load. Because if you load the wrong values, then your vTX locks at 25 mW. For example: If you have a Unify, should you load SA2.0 or 2.1? If you load 2.0, then your power values go 0 1 2 3. Ok -- what output power in mW does power value 2 equate to? Depends on which Unify you are using. Some of them go 25 100 200 400, some go 25 200 400 800 or whatever. If using SA 2.1, then the power value is the mW in dBm. Easy peasy -- just convert to dBm right? But what if you put in a dBm that doesn't correspond to an output power that the vTX supports? Well thank goodness Tramp vtxtable is so simple. Yup. In Tramp vtxtable, the power values always must go 25 100 200 400 600, so if your actual vTX outputs 25 200 600, then you will have power VALUE 200 equates to actual output power 600 mW, even though 600 is also a valid value to put in, but that vTX won't recognize 600 as a power value even though 600 mW is a valid output power. Except actual IRC vTX you can just put in the actual mW as the value and it works correctly. So yeah. On the one hand, "just load the right table" is correct. But knowing which table is right is NOT easy.
Except when you are new and struggling because you dont have video. I was literally here just a few months ago. Now - I have DJI and I don't care except I love learning all the things I couldn't figure out by fumbling for hours.
Being new to Betaflight It was daunting at first trying to figure out the hardware and which tables to use. It's videos like this that have helped me immensely in coming up to speed. Another thing.... even manufactures get it wrong, example EMAX TinyHawk 3 vtx table factory settings were wrong and if it wasn't for videos like this I would have never realized that smart audio always start with a 0 offset.
5+ years in the hobby, still find stuff to learn. Thanks JB

If you don't have something like the immersionrc RF power meter, it's difficult. The next best thing is if the vTX has an led readout or something.
Hy jb.. i have openvtx ovx300 when iam using bf 4.3 or above i seen the smartaudio undefined. But if iam using bf 4.2 i seen smartaudio. Its normal. All seting with same vtx table. I never seen post like that when i try to searching openvt undefined. Iam gratefull if u have solution. Thanks
Interesting thing about pit mode not working on some vtx's, I had betaflight 4.2 with pit mode working after power up, but after updating to 4.3 and migrating settings, it doesn't work anymore. Everything else works as it did in 4.2 except pit mode
nice!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a vtx that is supposed to go to 400mW but only goes to 200mW. Do I get the full 400 by adding another power level? It has three levels 0 1 2 as 25 100 200. So do I make it 4 levels to get to 400?
is the caddx nebula pro vista a dji vtx or is this video important for me?
That is a DJI vTX.
@@JoshuaBardwell oh thank you soo much for the fast response. Im a noob setting up my first drone and your vids are amazing thank you for the huge work👍🏼👍🏼
Hey everyone, I've got a problem I could use some advice for. I finally got my drone all put together, and I went to plug it in to betaflight and it did the normal 3 and then the 1 beep, but after that it started repeating these 3 tones over and over and it wasn't showing up on my computer either.
I looked on a program that shows all USB devices, and it shows up for a second, but then it goes away.
Can anyone help me with this?
do i have to find the vtx table that must correspond exactly the vtx im using, or can i just use smart audio as the one im using supports smart audio???
SmartAudio is the protocol used to talk to the vTX but you still need a vtxtable so betaflight knows what channels and output powers the vTX supports.
Ok thank you, I found a vtx table for smart audio 2.0 and it seems to work. The goggles connect to the vtx but there is just a black screen and says battery full in the goggles. What is wrong? Could you please help me out on that.
That means the FC is not getting signal from your camera.
I always thought that there were just three VTX tables smart audio, smart audio 2 and IRC tramp.
You could have some source of vibration like a off balance motor, bad bearing, or cracked frame part.
@@JoshuaBardwellthx for the tip. If Ich hold the quad very tight the twitching Shops. in your Video I saw that I can Check the different motorvibrations in betaflight. How much is to much ?
@@JoshuaBardwell is there a way of compensation for a vibrating motor or do u need to replace it?
You need to replace it, to be honest.
Am I early?
why do we bother with multi-band vtxs anymore? its such a hassle and complicates any button/led interface. i never use a band other than Raceband, so only having buttons for power and channel would make it a lot easier to design and use.
i get that different frequencies are illegal, but instead of locking bands, instead lock channels on a big band
You missed out your great clip on changing VTX on switch ua-cam.com/video/a1_U2v0kAjg/v-deo.html in this segment!!
