Stock Up A Year's Supply of Chicken | Raw Pack Meat Pressure Canning | Bone Broth | Grocery Haul
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Today Josh and Annie are canning chicken to put away for our year's supply of food. We will show you how to debone a chicken, and four different ways to can it: bone-in raw pack canning, bone-out raw pack canning, canning pre-cooked shredded chicken, and canning bone broth, made with all the chicken carcass leftovers. Canning meat may seem intimidating, but it's actually very easy! Canned chicken is our go-to way to store chicken for the year, because it doesn't take up precious freezer space. Plus we love the flavor of the finished product!

If you wash then cook up the chicken feet, you get tons of healthy gelatinous collagen!
Instead of feeding your bones to the dogs, use ALL of them to make bone broth, then put the bones on a cookie sheet in the oven on 300 degrees for a couple of hours (until you can break leg bone by hand) then run them through the blender to make bone meal. Bone meal is more expensive than dog food, so you can save some money.
Josh has been doing this and feeding it to the dogs. They LOVE it!
Well the expensive electricity would prevent me from
doing so
why not just give the bones to the dogs and what they don’t chew and leave on the ground 😮 how about I then produce those into Bone meal Over a Wood fire and process for Future garden use (roses love it) be well and your day and may there be fertilizer for all of us again someday
😮🤯💕
Have you tried using the broth to top off the shredded chicken instead of plain water?
How about we never give bones to dogs and do this cuz bones r horrible for dogd
So nice to see this lady following good kitchen practice hair back apron on very clean and respectful
Josh, your deboning of the chicken tutorial is so helpful. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “farm to fork”. Thanks for sharing.
We just butchered 130 chickens and 20 turkeys. With only 4 people is was a long day.
Nice to see you working together!! This is the best demo of cutting up a chicken I have seen!😀
Thank you so much for your encouragement it always appreciate it :-)
❤️❤️❤️
Agreed !!! 😊
You guys are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your skills for canning. God bless you and your family.
I love seeing all the different ways of doing the chickens. According to the National Center for Home Food Preservation guidelines for canning bone-in chicken it is 65 minutes for pints and 75 minutes for quarts. Also headspace for chicken is 1 1/4 inches.
PS use large mouth jars for canning chicken it's so much easier. You don't need a funnel for packing chicken you just need to wash the top of the jar when you're done.
Wide mouth jars would've come in handy. Skinless, raw packed bone in chicken, also known as "ugly chicken" is absolutely the best tasting chicken I've ever had. Will always do it this way. The bone broth we made from it was phenomenal as well. Thank You, Happy Thanksgiving!
Love seeing josh in the kitchen with you! I have a freezer full of chickens, I need to give this a go!
❤️❤️❤️
I canned raw chkn about 3 years ago. Well I feel it’s time I use up these canned jars of chkn. I’m going to make great big bunch of chkn tamales and start over again with fresh chkns.
Another thing, since you are adding liquid, start with 1/2 of water or broth in the bottom of the jar. That way it will migrate upwards as you are adding chicken and taking up the air spaces. You'll still have to add some water anyway so it's not like that 1/2 cup is taking the place of chicken.
Great video my question is how do you find a good man to enjoy preparing chickens in kitchens. I sure wish i had one like you❤
It’s such an encouragement to see the wonderful teamwork within your family. I think that is one of my favorite things about your channel. It really just makes my heart smile. Homestead and family goals right there. ❤
❤️❤️❤️
Love your chicken canning videos! Great information!
❤️❤️❤️
Another thing to add to your bones for broth is your chicken feet and the wing tips they are very high in collagen, and that's good for your bones and joints I grew up my grandparents did this
I totally agree with you about the cooked chicken being the best way to can it up. I can make chicken salad with it, I take it and make a chicken, broccoli, rice and cheese casserole all the time! I don't raise chickens, but every time the store has them on sale, I get several and cook them up, then take the bones and save for broth. Many times, I take the broth that is made when I cook the chicken, and I put that over the chicken instead of water. Instead of banging your jars down once you put the water in them, do you not use a de-bubbler?
❤️❤️❤️
I’m still in my first year of pressure canning meats. But after 7 or 8 batches of raw and pulled meat canning chicken, I have found I prefer raw pack with bone in, so that my broth in with the meat is bone broth. And I roast the leftover carcass and cook it with onion and herbs to make a quart or so per bird of overnight bone broth to pressure can the next day. I cook or air fry the skins separately and make schmaltz (rendered chicken fat) to put into a jar in the fridge for later cooking. So delicious!
Wonderful! Love the adaption and uses that you have found beneficial! Blessings!!
Cooked up with onions, herbs, and a small amount of carrot, it is no longer called broth, it is stock... Delicious-ness in a jar!
Back to say, I just finished cooking a full turkey breast in my PC. It worked SOOO well! I'll definitely do this with the chickens I need to get out of my freezer and process!
First time watching your channel. I love it. I just bought a presto digital canner. Can't wait to use it!
Wonderful! Enjoy your new canning adventures 😀
I love that knife, going through chicken like butter! Adding it to my wish list. 😉
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You just taught an old(70 y/o)a new trick. Your steps are more thorough than I have done for years. Esp how you don't have to deal with so many small bones. I often use home broth and my dogs like the raw chicken waste I don't use for broth.
Have been pressure canning chicken since 2020 when I bought my first PC. Have done a mix of raw pack bone in, chunked, skinless and boneless as well as cooked shredded. Nice thing about the cooked and shredded is the jars of broth that are also canned. Just processed 60 lbs leg quarters from some good deals at a local grocer over 3 canning sessions, all cooked and pulled from the bones. But my game changer this time was a $6 gravy fat separator from Ace hardware! It's only 1 cup but to take the extra bit of time to separate the fat in both the shredded meat jars and then the broth paid back double! Beautiful jars with no big fat cap. But nothing wasted....I poured the fat off into its own jar and it's refrigerated for cooking. Chicken fat is the secret ingredient for hot dogs here in Central NY at a popular local joint that's been around since the 50's. So I now have dozens of jars of chicken, broth and a big jar of good cooking fat. Best $6 I've spent this year!
Those puppies are adorable, I just came across your channel, I'm probably going to have to binge watch, you two are great.
Nice video. I've been using and All American 930 stove top canner for years. I love it so much that when I saw a stripped down AA 941 at a yard sale for $5 I grabbed it and spent about $50 to get it usable. And it's just the 2 of us most of the time! You've showed how to do it in a very easy straight forward way.
❤️❤️❤️
man who's that cool kid with the man bun and backwards hat. Wish i could meet him some day...

Nerd🤣
yeah it would be on my bucket list...
Thank you so much for this video. I'm new to canning, and I didn't think chicken could be canned. 😀
We love our canned chicken! It is the best homesteading fast food 😁
@@HeartwayFarms Well, keep up the excellent work you two!
I just came across your video. You guys are awesome working together like that❤. The video was very informative and actually enjoyed watching it. Thank you.
Beautiful and turkey and turkey stock for us folks that have to buy ours ! Get em while they are on sale folks !
❤️❤️❤️
Great video. You two are a great team. Josh I appreciate you carving the chicken. You make it look so easy. 😊
Supposedly it's not approved, but for those of us who can't raise birds Sam's and Costco rotisserie chickens are a great economical source of cooked chicken to can! I'll also cook and debone 10lb bags chicken leg quarters and add some cooked breast breast to the mix too!
This was SUPER helpful for me! I have some whole chickens and whole turkeys in the freezer that I want to can up. I raw pack boneless skinless all the time but was trying to figure out the easiest way to prep and can the whole birds. Never thought of cooking in the pressure cooker and then shredding. Absolutely trying that with these ASAP! Thanks so much, really this was great! I loved your process and I even hit the like button to make sure it is saved, and I hardly ever do that lol.
We’re processing 40 birds this weekend & will pressure can most of it. I love popping open a can for easy meals for my hungry boys!
❤️❤️❤️
I’m a new canner and the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning Book on page 5-5 says 1 1/4 inch headspace. (They changed it from 1 inch). It’s great to see you both working together.
The usda can suck it. You're sweet tho 💜
We absolutely love your channel, we raised meat chickens this year for the 1st time and followed your how to butcher videos and it worked out just great! Did the how to prepare pumpkin 5 ways and now really enjoying this video. Thank you so much for all the great information!
How kind of you! That's so great 👍 thank you very much for your encouragement and support! Blessings!!
If you feed it to dogs, bones get stuck in throat, intestines.
My first time visiting your channel. I also did the research on the Presto Digital Pressure canner and purchased one this winter. Haven't used it yet. You both are very easy to listen to and your instructions are excellent. Very encouraging. Yes, I subscribed to your channel and I am looking forward to getting to know you better in your videos. I love to grow and process food. We can't raise our own meat, but we know some people who do it right. Thank you!
Wonderful! Thank you so much for your support and encouragement! We enjoy our presto so much!
Hubby bought me one a cpl of months ago so I agree it is great to see a video using one.
Wonderful 😊 that is so sweet of him ❤️

I canned a lot of chicken with the bone on. The flavor was great but it was so hard to get out of the jar. I do love canning the breast and meat without the bone better. I haven't tried the shredded chicken yet , however, I do want to try that now.
❤️❤️❤️
Wide mouth jars will help with getting the chicken out.
Yes my chicken falls apart.need gentle touch. I am a new canner this year at 58 yrs old.
Yall make a great team, love to see yall working together. I agree I have done all 3 ways as well, and my favorite is cook and shred, because then you also get a ton of broth as well. Thanks for sharing!
That center cartilage in the breast is called the keel. I have been deboning my whole chickens for at least 45 years even for making fried chicken. It was easier for my children to eat AND I kinda fooled my kids on if it was dark or light meat…not that they ever noticed…lol. I am loving your video.
We love our shelf stable chicken meat.
❤️❤️❤️
Love your channel ❤️, great tips on how to preserve 🐔
❤️❤️❤️
We froze all of our 65 chickens after butchering in July but we need more freezer space so I like how y’all shred and can it up. I see myself thawing a bunch of whole chickens out this weekend and canning them. Great video and thanks for all your real life useful content!! 😊
Love the refresher course in cutting chicken. You guys are awesome ❤️
I’m processing chicken to can as I’m watching your video on processing chicken to can. 😂❤
Thank you so much for walking me through it! 🎉

@@HeartwayFarms I’ve been subscribed for a long time. Thanks.
Same. I am processing cook shredded chicken in my presto canner for the first time today.
I stumbled on this video while looking for information on the difference between raw packing and hot packing. (and I still don’t really know. Maybe I will by the end of the video🤞🏼)
Thank you so so much for sharing all this info. God bless you and yours always and forever.

I love canning and I like the presto digital canner idea when teaching my adult children how to can, they don't really like the other pressure canner, they are afraid of it exploding.
I like to raw pack the chicken pieces. We will be canning another couple of canner full batches this weekend. I have tried the bone in and I just don’t like it that way it turns out. Fall is coming and getting ready for the fall winter seasons so we are stocking up. Getting some beef stew and potato soup together as well. Love this time of year. You are right it is a team effect but the one thing that makes me happy is that my sons see what it takes to provide good food for the family. They have learned some awesome values.
Large mouth jars might make it easier to raw pack with bone in. Definitely easier to get it out, too.
Look at all that hard work that turned into beautiful, healthy meals on your shelves for your family. Well done. Canning food is absolutely the best fast homestead food there is 🤩 The electric canners are very hard to get here and then we need a conversion transformer(?) thing . They do look amazing though. Thank you for sharing lovelies 💚
I have two daughters are veterinarians and as per both never never never feed bones to our dogs. We've seen to many doggies needing major surgeries from bones lodging into their intestines and throats, cooked or raw !! Once you've boiled down the bones for hours to softened you can then bake in oven for a few more hrs at 350*F until softened and dried more to the point that they can go into a blender to be grounded into powder ...
Omg, those puppies are sooo cute
Thank you for your simple and clear instructions and demo. Your presentations are encouraging. You make it simple and easy to do. Great videos as always!
Thank you!
I so love your channel! There are only two of us. A pint would be great for bbq chicken sandwiches or chicken & dumplings. We raised Cornish cross this year. We only did 25!but that’s enough for us.
Thank you for all the tips. Especially presto canner!❤
Dehydrate those bones and and grind them up in a blender you have bone Meal for your garden
Just found your channel and loved this video. I can't wait to watch all your others. I just started canning and love all the info.
❤️❤️❤️
You can fit 5 quarts and a 3/4 qt jar (pint and a half, 24 oz jar) in the middle.
I butcher my chickens skin them, chill 24 hours , break them down and put into jars. The bone in is extra nutrients. I use the backs, necks, wing, tips, and giblets (liver heart and so on) to make broth or stock. At $3.99 a quart it's great savings. I can the up and can last 5 years in the jar. When I open the jar the bones just slide out.
I've canned for over 50 years. Until recently I've hot packed deboned chicken. Now I love bone in canning for that incredible broth. I take the skin off and freeze it to fry later for chips. I don't fill the jars all the way with chicken and do add water for the broth. If I'm canning a whole bird I can put in a split breast, thigh, leg and wing in a quart jar, but will do maybe 2 legs and a thigh with water for the bone broth. Actually...if possible...I freeze the wings for hot wings later, my FAVORITE.
When I moved to Ohio about every woman I met did not know how to cut up a chicken. I had to show them
❤️❤️❤️
Good and Blessed morning 🌞🌞 Annie and Josh and family. God bless y'all and thank you so much for sharing all your videos 🙏🙏🙏
❤️❤️❤️
Take the chicken skin and deep- fry the skin, makes for a nice snack like pork rines / crackings,
Excellent video. I also have the stove top and digital canners, they are amazing. Those fresh chickens are amazing. Thank you
Wonderful 💯 So happy that you are enjoying it!
On canning chicken I agree with you on the cooking the chicken and deboning the chicken before canning. Jars and jar space is important for me and the bone in canning seems to me like a waste. This is also the reason why I hot pack can even my fruit and vegetables. When I have raw packed them it seems like I waste a bunch of the jar space
❤️❤️❤️
Great video thanks
Thanks guys, you were great.
❤️❤️❤️
I love doing this with cooked chicken I use it to make rice dish it’s lovely x
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing

great tutorial...i struggle cutting up a whole chicken..lol..hubby makes it look so easy
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on pressure canning, always learn so much from your video,s.
I LOVE the Presto digital canner! What a time saver!
Excellent tutorial I am going to use these methods with my chickens. Thank you
Just got my Presto digital canner! Happy Birthday to me!
Yay 😁
I have two All American 921 canners that I love, of course, but I have to do that canning outside and so I was getting very little canning done. Last year I invested in the Carey electric canner and it was hands…down…one of the best investments I’ve made. Yes it’s true I can do lots more at a time in my All American but if I can’t get it done for various reasons (right now I couldn’t can outside because I have an anaphylactic allergy to the cold) I can use my Carey day and night. And it’s getting done. I even ordered another Carey yesterday. Trying to work through all my beef bones.
A wooden chopstick is great to run down into your jars to get the boiling water down throughout the shredded chicken.
Chicken bones are not safe to feed to dogs. They splinter and can puncture their insides. We lost one of our dogs that accidentally got ahold of a piece of chicken. He became septic do to the puncture. We have never fed our dogs chicken bones. Any other bones are not s bad. Just my experience. Watching you guys break down the bird makes it look so easy. Lol I hate cutting up chicken.
Cooked bones are definitely dangerous for dogs. Raw bones are much safer.
Only if they have been cooked
A vet told me raw chicken bones are perfectly safe...he said, " wolves and coyotes eat raw bones, dogs are carnivores "
Is is possible to dry the cooked bones and make a bone powder? Is that even a thing? Can you tell I’m not very good at this sort of thing. Just a thought🤷🏼♀️
If they are pressure canned, chicken bones are fine
Wish I could raise my own chicken but I have to by ,but I have enough beef stew and chicken stew for many years to come and pickle jahr also for years thanks god iam a senior and single I did it 😊
Thanks for showing the digital canner. I ordered mine after seeing you can raw pork. My chickens will be ready in mid December. Can't wait to can them. God bless you.
Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement!
❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful. Thank you
❤️❤️❤️
I want a knife like that.
Freeze wings separately for fried wings. Yum
I tried raw packing bone in and I won’t do it again. I agree I want to maximize the space in my jars. ❤
I just learned something about my presto canner that i did not know so thats fun.... i need throw some things out now.. 😭
Really enjoyed this one and so timely as we were just getting ready to can chicken for the first time. The whole process couldn't have been easier with the Presto Pressure canner. The only problem we had was with the head space of which we were being very conscious. After the jars had set for a few days we noticed the fat cap first which we didn't know about and some chicken stuck up above that then got a little funky. There was only one of eight that was really noticeable. So we opened that one first and threw it out. Any advice would be great. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
You can also use chicken stock instead of water when you pack cooked chicken.
❤️❤️❤️
Wow, this was so helpful. Thank you both.
Thank you so much for your encouragement and kind words! We are happy you enjoyed it! Blessings!!
I am not able to join abundance plus and I was afraid that you were not going to have very many videos now. I just wanted to and tell you how much I enjoy your content.
Loved the video l
❤️❤️❤️
Very informative video. Thank you.
Those puppies are adorable! What breed? and thanks!! New to canning here ;)
They are Anatolian shepherds and Great Pyrenees mix
That's a lot of chicken processing! Just a suggestion...wouldn't it be easier just to have a couple of...ostriches?? I dunno! 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Loved this. ❤
How did you sanitized jars before putting the shredded chicken in them?
Thank you for very useful tutorial about meat canning.
I don't raise chickens, so I have to buy it. I have raw packed (my favorite method) some leg quarters bone-in skin-on as well as bscb, cut into chunks. I prefer the bscb because, of course, there is more meat per jar. But the quarters produce a more flavorful broth. I have also combined boneless skinless white and dark meat and use that for soups and casseroles. The white meat makes the best chicken salad! Do you de-bubble after adding the water? Also, do you let the broth cool and skim the fat off the top before processing? Your broth is beautiful! Thank you for sharing how you process your chickens. It is truly a group effort!
Great tutorial!
Really like my presto canner.
Great video!
On average, what do you think each chicken weighs?
I love canned chicken. Best flavor and versatility. I do skinless/boneless brests but feel this method is not efficient nor sound practice. I think from now on, I will get the whole birds, bone out at home, then do raw pack use the bones for stock and render the skin for schmaltz. I will also try roasted shredded as well.
Can you recommend a good boning knife?
