I believe his singing was raised to a newer level with more modern audio technology but you cannot deny he was one of the greatest singer of any generation. My father introduce me to his music in the fifties and we used to sing it in the choruses of the clubs in the sixties and seventies.A great artist and voice given by god.

My Uncle (yes true) A family of great singers, My Grandad John (Jack) to many was a beautiful Tenor himself, as was Brendan (Brendan Locke was named after him) as was Patrick. His name was Joseph McLaughlin from Derry

My Great Uncle. My Grandfathers brother. The thing is that all the Brothers could sing Tenor. John (Jack) Mclaughlin my Grandad, Brendan McLaughlin (Brendan Locke also was a singer named after Uncle Brendan) , Tom, Dick and Patrick McLaughlin were also equally as good. (Yes my surname is different as my mum got married lol

A wonderful reminder of how well this man could sell a song. Although the voice was failing by this time, you won't find it done with greater conviction and skill. There just aren't people of this calibre around today - a real showman and a true artist.

He did experience it. He was a Derry man. There's a part of that song that outlined Unionist treatment of Derry people, most of whom were Catholic. There were many shirt factories in Derry, and most of the employees were women. There were very few employment opportunities for Catholic men, so they stayed at home and took care of their families. This was a deliberate policy to make the men feel inferior, when at the time the man was expected to be the breadwinner. Phil Coulter wrote that song very carefully. I saw the Bogside in 1973 and it shocked me.

When josef songs its, its even more than a song, its a story. It's nearly beyond music. I don't think ivr ever seen such a passionate heartfelt and poignant performance of any song. You can see its coming from the heart.

thanks for your lovely post. Always great when someone posts details of their personal experience. This show was from 1984 - but there is another LATE LATE SHOW appearance for `82, when he sang the same song. He has a better pianist that night - and gave the finest version of this song I;ve ever heard - really made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Hope it gets posted on youtube sometime.

I think he sounded better as he got older. his later recordings, are the ones that I will remember. While his voice had softened a lot by then, He could still belt out some excellent high notes. It seemed as if he could sing anything. Joe Lynch is another singer, who sounded better, late in life.

Brilliant! - a master of the schmaltz.
Perfect for the lyrics of this song - which is one of the worst songs ever written, but totally playable, singable, get maudlin to.
I'm from Derry by the way, and as for the unemployed men housekeeping whilst their wives worked in the shirt factories - think of all the bookies, pubs, and greyhound racing. And then try to believe this sentimental rot.
When he wrote this Phil Coulter must've known his pension would be well sorted out.
