The part you skipped over at the end is so important!! Magic comes out and gives Larry a Lakers jersey, on which he wrote, "To the greatest basketball player ever, but more important, a friend forever." A legendary moment in my opinion

They were fierce rivals that became the best of friends. Magic (I was a Kareem guy, back then) and Bird saved a tottering NBA, and there may never be such a period of high-caliber rivalry again, in any sport, said the "Raider Hater". ;)

This is the greatest Ultimate Mix Tape out of all of the players that have one. His entire career was a highlight reel. I had season tickets to Knicks games in the mid '80's. He always destroyed my team. One game I remember..,, he had 22 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals: In the first half!! In the third quarter he didn't take a shot, but had 7 assists and three blocks. Every one of his dimes brought the crowd to its feet. Great vid and reaction bro!

Magic and bird saved the nba when it was failing and on its knees then jordan took what they did and turned the nba into a world wide phenomenon.
Without bird and magics rivalry there would be no nba or jordan , kobe , shaq , curry or lebron.
Other players have said that Larry could dominate the game without taking a shot. You can't say that about very many players. Most of them need the ball and to be taking shots or dunks if they're going to dominate. So when people respond to, for example J. J. Reddick's hot take, that's why they say you have to look way beyond pure shooting stats to understand Larry's impact and greatness.

I personally enjoyed Larry Birds the most. Not only is he in the conversation of who's the goat 🐐. He won Gold 🥇 *(with his NBA Rivals like Magic and MJ)* at the Olympics, became a Head Coach, then went upstairs to the Head Office.... running everything!! Larry's GENUINE friendship with Magic Johnson was awesome to see, on and off the court. Oh yeah, Larry also had *Rookie of the Year* as well 😎

And first off, a fractured finger that he got while playing softball with his brother right before he went into the NBA, but he hid the injury from Coach Auerbach because he thought he wouldn't get to play! His finger is bad crooked TODAY. 👀
Thanks for showing Larry some love. Basically, Larry passed between the legs of an opponent more than a rockstar through groupies.
You actually should have watched the end. I got to see Larry play a few times. I was convinced he could see in the future and had eyes in the back of his head. Smartest player I've ever seen. And toughest. He played with a really bad back for quite a while along with other issues.
The ending is purposeful. The videographer who put this video together knew what he was doing.
You should see his passing video! Larry Bird greatest passer of all time re-edit with new footage. You won't regret it.
The thing that made Bird so freaky was his court awareness. He was such a great passer, that you couldn't double him or cheat up on him, he'd find the man you left. If you commit to stop his perimeter game, he'd take you to the hole. If you sat on your heels to stop his drive, he'd pull up and hit you with the midrange. He would get in your head and get you off your game. Remember, he only played about 9 healthy seasons, and only played 13 total (technically 12, because one of those he only played like 4-5 games because of injury)
This, but I want to add that one thing folks seem to miss is that he used each of his skills to leverage the others. You had to honor a fake pass, because he'll kill you at passing, and the same went for shot fakes. That not only meant that his fakes were devastating, they sowed uncertainty into the opposition's mind. A Marine friend once told me, you don't want to present the enemy with a problem, you need to present him with a dilemma. As a student of military history, he's right, and that's just what Bird did.
I was never a Bird fan, but I am a fan of Bird reactions, so that take's based on what I keep seeing these days. Bird was a running dilemma in his career, so a game against him was never locked down unless you had a big lead late, and maybe not even then. There are a ton of great players, but Larry was one of one, he has no close equivalent. The GOAT isn't something I'll go at for anyone, but if I were drafting a team of them, I'd pick Bird first, just so the competition won't have him. He's a lethal wild card, which is saying a lot.
I love when he makes other players fall down because they don’t know whether he is about to shoot or pass.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, baseball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, and was what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched! Wish you would have waited to see his retirement ceremony to see Bird and Johnson, it was quite touching 💗💗💗
For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was and never had the chance to see him play this comment is for you. Remember in this comment I am just highlighting Larry's NBA accomplishments.
Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year of his NBA career. Just think about it, what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought.

My favorite Larry Bird play of all time was that steal in the 1987 Eastern conference finals game against Detroit. (8:32) Boston was down by a point and Detroit had possession of the ball. It was the closing seconds of the game. Isiah Thomas was ready to inbound the ball to Bill Laimbeer and my heart was breaking. It was over. Done deal. The ball shot straight at Laimbeer and I swear, in my mind, I saw Larry take flight, Superman cape and all and grab that ball out of the air and find DJ, who made the game winning shot, with a second to go. It was spectacular. But of course, we would expect nothing less from Larry. ♥

I’m so thankful for UA-cam because, regardless if the “GOAT” debate, Bird was rarely ever mentioned in fans top ten. It’s like they just heard he was a shooter and that’s it. Yet, IMO he’s the greatest all-around player in the nba, past or present.

Bird's passing frequently gets underrated and it was absolutely phenomenal. Check out some video of his passing highlights. Actually, there is a "Making the Case" video for Bird that is pretty good as well. Of course, there are numerous trash-talk videos too because he was so good at it that other players (like Jordan) imitated his trash-talking. The thing about Bird was he wasn't just cussing people, it was different. He'd tell guys what he was about to do, dare them to try and stop him, and do exactly what he said he was going to do. He consistently torched the best players in the game.
I know Jordan was more athletic, but Bird’s highlight reel is him DOMINATING every aspect of the game. Shooting, Rebounds, Assists, Steals, Game Winners, Playing Hurt, Hustle… etc… his Basketball IQ was Einstein level genius. He lifted his team single handed more than any player in HISTORY. He took a 29 win Celtics team, and won 60 games his first season. By just adding Bird. Even Jordan didn’t impact the Bulls that fast.
Yes! I love what you said about Bird being a facilitator! I feel like that is something that doesn't get the recognition and kudos it deserves. Having a great playmaker can be more impactful just by creating opportunities for others and making everyone around them better, rather than just being a great role player, like someone who is great at defense or shooting, but more middling at other things. Being a good "conduit," especially at Bird's level, requires being skilled in multiple roles, having really quick reaction time and having amazing court awareness, and I personally find them a lot of fun to watch.
I was born in '72 and my stepfather was a huge basketball fan so i grew up watching larry bird. I hated my stepdad and his team was the lakers so i chose boston as mine and followed the thru mist of birds career. I loved him. I seen so many boston Celtic games thruout the '80s
I really wish you watched the end of the video. It was a special moment with Magic and Bird.
I was lucky enough to watch Larry play back in the day, because he played simply for love of the game and a desire to be the best. He played as complete a game as can be played. He could win a game without ever sinking a basket, and often called his shots or laid out plays for the defenders. They say he was a trash talker, but it was really just talk because he could back it up.
He also shared a really cool game strategy with Wayne Gretzky. Gretz was so good, that he seldom stepped on the ice without a designated defender on his ass, and when he couldn't get free of them, he would simply start following another player, thereby removing two players from the play. Larry does the same thing, he would draw away the defenders and then make a pass. He remains the most deceptive passer I have ever seen, even when lying on the floor.
He entered the league with a reconstructed index finger on his right hand, which he injured playing baseball. I think this is how he became ambidextrous. He played his last 7 years with an unstable spine in constant pain, which he took no medication for, because of his father's alcoholism and suicide.
When Larry played the game you had to fight for your shot and wrestle off defenders, it was a harder game.
When he retired, he left such a void, I quit watching for a long time. It was definitely a day that broke Basketball's heart.

What always amazed me watching Larry Bird play was that when you see all those amazing passes and amazing shots what you don't see it that man did that with a broken finger....before he even started the NBA he had a career ending injury...his right index finger was broken and pointed a 90 degree angle toward his thumb and he played like that his entire NBA career.

The thing that put Larry above others, in my mind, was his ability to raise the level of his teammates' play. He involved everyone and they were expected to be worthy of being included. If you didn't up the play of their games to keep up with him, they usually didn't stay on the team for long. He raised expectations with the fans, his teammates, and the rest of the NBA. He was the GOAT of the 1980s, period.
It is great to relive the great moments of Bird's career. I never saw another baller that had his basketball I.Q. Incredible clutch shooter, prolific passer and competitor for days.
I've watched many reactions to Ultimate Larry Bird videos (you must watch the video on his passing) and most reactions were by young men (mostly) who had absolutely no idea how good Larry Bird was. To start, few of them knew that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson saved the NBA from oblivion. If you were good enough to play pro ball would you want to play on a team with Larry Bird ... or Michael Jordan. With Bird, you're definitely going to be part of the action, with Jordan you can just stand there and watch him shoot. On my all-time all-start team my first two choices would be Larry Bird (forward) and Magic Johnson (guard). I just don't know which one I'd pick first. Those guys were the ultimate TEAM players. As Larry said, "You get one step on your defender you're getting the ball!" With their passes, Larry and Magic made other players on their teams all-stars. ENJOYABLE reaction. Keep it up!
I'm not good at time stamping, but my three favorite moments from Larry's ultimate mixtape are these, in no particular order:
1. The catching of the super long pass and hitting a three point shot. So fluid, so fast, so beautiful!
2. Teamwork with Dennis Johnson (Sorry if I have the wrong player, but I think it's Dennis), Larry passes to him, and he just does almost a volleyball-like thrust back to Larry, and Bird scores.
3. Behind the backboard shot. I love seeing people react to this! It's so awesome, and I've seen reactors actually pause the video, get up and leave for a few seconds out of sheer dumbfounded amazement! It's so funny and great to see reactions like that!!
As at least one previous commenter has said, you shoulda watched the end-- you really blew it, imho, by deciding you didn't need to see something when you didn't even know what it was. That ending was, in a way-- for me at least-- the heart and soul ending. Also, just as you were in a hurry to get to the end and missed that, it seemed like-- and if I'm mistaken here, sorry, my bad-- you didn't listen to the sound track, even though some of the greats (e.g., Dr. J, and his opening words) were sharing their thoughts. And because of not listening, you may have missed the fact that when Larry went back in to play after his face plant, the announcer said he'd fractured his cheek-- so all you saw him do after his return, he did with a broken face (I've also heard/read that he had, as well, a concussion and double vision, with him having said he just picked one of the two baskets he was seeing and aimed for that one.
You may have missed the funny parts/bravodo, too, as when Xavier McDaniels said that after Larry told him he was going to get the ball and make the basket in his face, and did just that, he added "Damn, I didn't mean to leave two second on the clock."
Other interesting/important things as well, that really give us the feel of what Larry was all about, that you may have missed as well.
If I'm correct in thinking you missed at least parts of the sound track, I'm guessing this may be partly because you're primarily a visual person, so you naturally focus on that aspect-- understandable, but not inevitable-- you can always listen to what folks are saying, and then rewind to really focus on the the visuals. If you keep watching Bird vids, it'll be important, because some of them heavily feature some of the all-time greats sharing their Bird experience and opinions/reactions, and not only do I figure you'd really enjoy hearing that, but we'd also enjoy seeing and hearing your reactions to what they all say.
Last-- if you watch nothing else of all the great Bird vids, I'm thinking you should definitely watch the RE-EDIT version of Larry's passing vid. Can't recall the exact title, but I'm sure someone else will, and also if you just type in "Bird passing re-edit," I think it should show up. It's just a thing of beauty, poetry, brilliance, incredible skill on so many levels...plus you get to see Larry quarterbacking. I wouldn't usually give the surprise away iike this, but I'm hoping that might intrigue you enough to convince you to react to it! Plus I can see you really know a lot about the game, so I think you'd really, really appreciate what you see him do in that passing re-edit video.
The thing is that there are so many more shots and passes that are more impressive. From day 1 in the league he was fire bro. I was in elementary school when he retired so I don't remember him that much growing up. But man being able to watch him today is wow mind blowing how great he was. Definitely my favorite player. He was a blue collar player and I relate to him so much more than anyone else. Peace nice review 👋🏻.

The most spectacular short video I've seen of Larry Joe is called "Larry Bird Bird is the word - 15 minutes of Larry Legend" be aware, that first song, Bird is the word is nuts. But be sure to turn it up after it gets done, because the next ones are set perfectly to the movement. Especially the last one. He's always been so much fun to watch. The hustle, and his love for the game is so obvious.

I think coach Riley has the best quote. I am paraphrasing a bit but he said if I need a shot to win the game I want Jordan but if I need a shot to save my life I want Bird. Bird was hands down the best cold, clutch killer I ever saw play.

You missed one of the greatest moments by skipping at the end. 🥺 First, most don't realize that Larry Bird's retirement ceremony was not at the start of a game, it was the only event that day. The arena packed for the retirement ceremony. That moment you skipped was the announcement and arrival of Magic Johnson. The respect and cheering of the Boston crowd for Magic (a rival player) shows how much these two guys meant to basketball!! Magic wrote on a jersey he gave Larry, that he was "the greatest basket player ever, but also a friend forever." I was privileged to be able to watch these two, Magic Johnson and Larry Legend, play against each other. Neither was on my hometown team, but I knew greatness when I saw it. The video also doesn't get into how hurt Larry had been. His serious back pain that ended his career early, and his broken hand from before he even began his pro career, plagued him throughout those video clips you watched. The video also doesn't cover the fact that the three point shot was new back then. Larry didn't grow up training with it or using it, yet he perfected it. Lastly, Larry Bird was one steal away from a Quadruple Double in a game, but he CHOSE to sit out the entire fourth quarter anyway! The Celtics were winning by so much, that when the coach offered Larry a chance to go in to get that amazing stat, Larry declined saying. "I did enough damage." He played for the love of the game, and not for stats!

I watched Larry Legend play nearly every week from 82 to 92. People just dont understand how great LB was. I know people may not relate lol but after MJ I have Larry 2nd best player ever to date from players that Ive watched play.

FYI, I think it was from 85 til he retired that he played with a very bad back. Was making his mom a new driveway and screwed his back up. So for the rest of his career, he played with a very bad back. Imagine Lebron in that situation 🤣
