I was having problems exchanging the lock cylinder out of the old switch and into the new switch until I found this vudeo. Thank you for showing and explaining exactly how that is done!..... Simple with your explanation!
I had the ignition switch go bad. In particular the starter contact. So all I needed to replace was the switch. You talked about the new switch will be in the end position when you get it, but it wasn't clear to me in your video that the tumbler will not go all the way in in that end position. You have to physically move it to the center position to get the tumbler to go all the way in. You do that by twisting the big lever on the back of the switch. And after you have the tumbler in place, you have to hold it in against the spring as you install the screw.
Thanks for the video, been needing to replace my ignition for a while, my truck has 780,000 miles on it and once you start it you have to quickly return the key to run position because the spring no longer kicks it back.
Thank you. My '96 Ram Cummins broke exactly like yours did. Parts store thought I needed the comutator switch too. But I'll be swapping it back for a lock cylindet. It's ironic to me the lock costs more than the switch.
Thank you sm I had the same exact problem as you on my 93 b250. Even had the same break on the tumbler, I was in a pinch so I needed to move the van asap so I got some jb weld n epoxied the little piece that broke off back on and it got me moving again until the new one comes
I literally fought with this thing every other day for a month and a half. now I was able to put it together I had to apply pressure on the not the old school key part but the pin directly behind the ignition lock cylinder. It was starting to become an addictive game messing with this thing. Thanks for the info. Now how do I replace the ignition in a 89 suburban. or better yet help me find my keys.. lol
I'll show u how when I get some time ,but what I do is I find the wire to the starter solenoid,and trace it back to the connection by the fuse box by the battery,and run a wire from battery positive,turn ignition on ,then touch the wire from the batter to the starter solenoid wire and it runs ,then put the wire out of the way so it doesn't touch on body or engine ..so each time I need to start I have to open the hood and turn on ignition touch my wire and boom running I'll replace the switch when it's not that cold .
I think I have exactly this problem - a broken ignition tumbler. Does a new ignition switch work even with the bad tumbler? Doesn't the ignition tumbler need to be replaced? I'm asking because new switches are available on eBay for $40, but I don't want to waste time and money on a switch if that's not the issue.
One important detail that was missing to get the tumbler out of the switch. With the key in the tumbler, turn clockwise one setting, then PULL THE KEY OUT of the tumbler and it slides right out.
Hey, I had to replace both the ignition switch and the tumbler and it starts up the motor but I don't have any power to the radio, the dome lights, and the power mirrors. And I checked the fuses.
Brad Benson did u figure out why ? Sounds like a cable might of not been seated all the way or a relay possibly. Please lmk if ur able to respond. Thanks again.
@@chaddorethy6629 & Brad; make sure that you don't have any wires burnt in two at or around the wiring harness pigtail where it connects to the ignition switch module. I noticed a burn spot on the cowling underneath, took it apart and found where dust had collected and was not letting heat dissipate thereby letting the wiring get hot and heat up the plastic. Every once in awhile when the sunlight catches it just right on steering wheel, we'd see an ever so slight of a wisp of smoke float up from below. HTH.

Yes you have to manipulate the levers on the back side to get a new one in. Thanks for this response. It is vital for installing a new tumbler!

I can’t get mine in there, there’s 2 tabs that won’t push in, I got this switch off of eBay for 60$ (the cylinder won’t go in the switch)

Make sure you get new key with switch.
I must have a problem with the new key and switch because it got stuck before it was all the way in

Tried putting my ignition back in and when I did it started smoking took it out and now it won’t start no lights anything any ideas
