Edited excerpt from the TV series Classic Albums: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Damn The Torpedoes” that aired on MTV, VH1, PBS and other channels... The show is a song by song “deep dive” into the band’s recording of their seminal and iconic 3rd album that was produced by Jimmy Iovine and sound engineered by the great Shelly Yakus. Definitely a “must watch” for every Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan...
This is a supreme example of what makes The Heartbreakers and how their music captivates us. Not a hit, but another piece of the pyramid of greatness they built over 40 years.
Shelly Shelly, Shelly Yakkus...Shelly Shelly, Shelly Yakkus. Thanks for posting Glad those Damn the Torpedo masters in the background weren't lost in the fire :)
I once saw Benmont at mass in Beverly Hills. He was by himself and I don't think anyone but me noticed who he was. I wanted so much to say something to him at the end of the service but he stayed in the pew and knelt so it just wasn't appropriate.
Every band would be fortunate to have a Benmont Tench once in their lifetime! Then again, one did
excellent interview
What Benmont was trying to say here was: “How fucking great was Stan Lynch?”.
What a spectacular behind the scenes explanation of a gem of a song.
I think this is one of my top 3 songs by TP and Heartbreakers..the lyrics, the music and harmony between Tom and Stan..just perfect
one of my favorite TP songs.
I wish they made a live video of this song. Great song

Benmont hitting it on the nose here. They were always a great band but that groove at that time was what launched them over the top.

Sounds like he was going through something.
Edit, probably the death of one of his parents, if it was either 2002 or 2014.
This is one of those songs they never performed live. I’ve always loved this track.
RIP tom petty
Beeindruckend was ihr zu sagen habt und wie ihr es erklärt! Beste Grüße, Horst Lemke, Musikproduzent, Germany

*The engineer looks like an old-age version of "mask" from Cher's movie.*
MrMann umm..." the engineer" is the very highly respected and sought after Shelly Yakus, a legend in the business... you are welcome
*Damon Well... um.... and? Since I never mocked the engineer's work or accomplishments, that renders your comment null and void. You weren't thanked.*
Damon no, just mock his looks. Classy.
