I don’t have anything against this tourniquet, but the reason the CAT tourniquet took you a minute and 11 seconds isn’t because it’s a bad tourniquet… it’s because you don’t know how to use it. I just pulled out my cat tourniquet and had it applied in a manner that stop hemorrhaging in 12 seconds. It’s all about your knowledge of the equipment. Just don’t try to tarnish the reputation of another piece of equipment to make this one look better. Edit: yes I did this one handed
Agreed. I teach an active shooter response class and the CAT Tourniquet, in my opinion, is the better option because it is the easiest to use after you learn how. Application in just a few seconds and less chance of fumbling with it. That said, the RAT and the SWAT-T each have their advantages and benefits as well. CATs are quite bulky and expensive, for example.
Just found your channel. Like your delivery, humility and production quality. I subscribed. Keep making vids. You’ve got the potential to go big on UA-cam.
Are you sure that´s an actual CAT-TQ? On Gen7´s (since 2015) the Time-Stamp is grey, not black, and the actual Buckle to route through has only a single opening, unlike the one shown.
It is a genuine CAT-TQ, but it's an older model. I don't remember exactly when I got it, but I have several spread around all over the place and that one happened to be handy for the test.
@@TheWarriorSolution I’ve been trained with TQ using CAT tq and application is simple and quick. I would imagine modern CAT tq are better for arm hemorrhaging while RAT may be better for leg injuries as you don’t need to step through a staged TQ, but idk
studies have shown that the older gen CAT-TQ functions as well with single strap routing, and no mater how you route the strap..(as redesigned gen7's have single strap routing) so if you have an older gen CAT just set it up with the strap going through the loop ONCE..
Just got a cheap made in China knock off Rat from the internet just for testing how it works. Its metal hook is made from steel which seems durable but the elastic is thiner and shorter. Honestly, it works fine so far. Even better than a knock off Cat. I’m LEO who familiar with Cat and Soft-t and always carry a tq with me. Gotta buy a real Rat for sure. I love the design and how compact it is. It won’t be a burden to carry it along with other kind of tq that’s for sure. This is the first video of you that I watch and I see no reason not to like and subscribe! Thanks
Awesome, I'm glad you found it helpful! There is a lot of hate for the RATs, but you can't beat how easy it is to carry and forget about until you need it. If it's good enough for SF, it's good enough for me. Thanks for the sub!
Thanks! I don't really care what internet trolls have to say. If an SF medic invented it and the teams actively use it, I couldn't care less what the internet thinks.
@@TheWarriorSolution I care more what peer reviews with the American college of surgeons say and recommendations from the CoTCCC vs the “approval” of the made up TCCC.
@@dantheradlad5802 Standards like the ones set by the CoTCCC are awesome. But I'm not in Afghanistan or any other war-torn country. For most average Joe citizen, an ambulance or EMS crew can be on site in +/-10mins. In that short of time, any reduction of blood flow to an injured limb is a life saver (assuming we're not talking about inguinal bleeds or truncal hemorrhage). The RATS is just fine for EDC. It can be applied in less than 20 seconds which allows you 40 seconds to call 911. Boom: rescue protocol in sub-60 seconds.
Good review of the RAT, though the reason why you struggled with the CAT is due to how you have it set up. It's running through both loops, it should only be ran through the last loop and you will not have any struggle with the velcro when pulling.
@@TheWarriorSolution The two tourniquets are great. I carry the RATS as EDC and the CAT in my truck in an IFAK. Both have pros and cons as everything. Great video though! And I'm not an expert either. I try to learn from local training, First Aid Kit workshops, Videos (like yours, (Y) )etc. I'm a CIVI that likes to be prepared. Cheers from México!
That actually highlights the other main advantage of the RATS. It is stupid simple to use correctly and fast and you don't need it setup/staged perfectly for one handed self application. Most people saying RATS are grabage are professionals who can and do train and practice a lot and are more focused on applying it to someone else than they are self application with one hand under extreme stress by an average non pro medic type person. The average person doesn't have the time, money, or motivation to practice and train enough to make one handed self application of a CAT or SOF-T as fast and effective as a RATS. I say a person should have both. A RATS for one handed self application and a CAT/ SOF-T for using on others or yourself with two hands like on a leg.
This is a pretty misleading video and potentially dangerous. That is a Gen 7 CAT TQ, which does not need to be double routed through the buckle as you have it. With any generation of CAT TQ, you are not supposed to double route the strap when applying the TQ on an arm, but the Gen 7 moved the teeth on the inside of the buckle so that you don’t have to double route it for leg application either. With training on how to correctly apply the TQ, there is absolutely no reason that single-handed self-application should take more than 10 seconds (and that is being generous). I don’t mean this in any way to be belittling or argumentative, but it sounds like you simply haven’t been taught how to properly apply a TQ (especially the CAT)… and so I would strongly caution against making a video that suggests the product does not work as it should when you aren’t aware that the flaw you are trying to point out is actually operator error. Again, please, especially when it comes to lifesaving products, be careful not to spread misinformation.
Thanks for the comment. Hence the reason for the disclaimers all over the place that I'm not a medic. I was not aware of the teeth you mentioned or that it doesn't need to be double routed. Thanks for pointing that out.
@@TheWarriorSolution Okay, but you should have done more research before promoting this tourniquet and making the others look inferior. The RAT tourniquet is one of the worst on the market.
Great video man! And for anyone reading this, remember to put the tourniquet as close to your abdomen as possible, regardless of which point on your limb is injured.
I think what he was saying there is that he could have applied it tighter but did not (because it's just a demonstration). I think that was the implication based on his tone.
I found your video after seeing the RAPID TQ on my patriot supply co. I hit up YT to see how it worked when i found your video. I appreciate the explanation about it. When i saw you fumbling with your CAT i had to go get mine and test it out. After not training recently i got 24 seconds non dominant hand and 18 second with dominant hand. As with any tool regular training is essential. I think your CAT time is also increased because you arent mentally pretending that you are dying and just casually talking to the camera. The CAT also worked just fine on my wrist so it would probably be fine for most children but not very skinny children or infants. I see that RAPID certainly has a place in the IFAK. Thank you for your video and for teaching me something today. Train on!
I can grab the main metal part of the RATs and pull it out with either hand to to my left. Because of the loop built into it and the metal part, I can't pull it out to my right, but it's very easy to access and pull to the left with my right hand. The limitations that restrict it from the right are my belt loops and the velcro strips I use to keep it nice and tight against my belt.
Bro! No hate, but you need to take some updated training on the Cats. You were struggling🤣. I was the same and I took a stop the bleed class from Chilli in the Dallas area. He ironed out every single flaw when it comes to applying the cat.
All the people who talk crap on these have probably never used one, let alone used one in a real emergency. The best part of this is that it's small and can be carried in a pocket, and i dont care who you are, You will not daily carry something in normal civilian life that is bulky and doesnt fit comfortably in a pocket. Bring whatever you will actually carry. A CAT in your car is useless compared to a RAT in your pocket. If its good enough for SF medics then its good enough for me. As stated it also works on kids and animals so it has more scenarios where it'll be useful. Could the CAT be applied faster then he did sure but still not faster then the rat and still not as easily. I see another comment of someone tossing this aside while bleeding because apparently this one wasnt working and the CAT worked. Id chalk that up to the opposite of this video, a lack of training on this platform. Theres plenty of studies on this tourniquet and the complaints have been that they arent as comfortable or they can slip but again proper training resolves both of those. Velcro is louder, fails in mud or sand, isnt as easy to carry, and isnt as easy to self apply. CATs are great and they work great but so do RATs its just a different method of doing the same exact thing. Both are better then nothing.
He had the strap fed through both slots on the buckle, which yes it is easier with two hands on say a leg application, but for an arm application you only need to use the single slot on the buckle. Making it much faster. Good video tho brother, I may have to purchase one to try myself.
These are junk. They have very high occlusion pressure because it’s a thin band. They also take longer to apply than the SOF-T Wide, CAT gen 7, and others.
