When Kate does that "gonna be alright" line, and then Peter builds up to "got to wa-a-a-a-a-lk out of here", and then hits that high note... this song is pure magic. Of course it's literally saved people's lives. Also, Tony Levin used one of his daughter's diapers to mute his bass strings to get that tone. It's fabulous.
Classic, I got all kates albums, most fortunate to see her live three times in the eighties, and then we have the genius, P GABRIEL,,,this duet, could never have gone wrong ❤❤❤❤
This wasn't the first time that Kate and Peter had worked together. Kate provided the backing vocals on two tracks on Peter's third self-titled album (referred to as Melt), "Games Without Frontiers," and "No Self Control."" This was also when Peter introduced Kate to the FairlightCMI digital synthesiser and sampler, which play a key role in her subsequent albums. Peter was a guest on Kate's 1979 BBC Christmas Special, where Kate & Peter covered the Roy Harper "Another Day."
Peter Gabriel wrote another spellbinding duet for Elizabeth Fraser and Paul Buchanan called 'Downside Up'. They have a very similar vocal dynamic - husky vs ethereal.
Just realised the version i love of Lets go Out Tonight has Craig Armstrong as the vocalist. Have you heard his version? The arrangement is different too. It's on here if you want to check it out.@@TheraminTrees
I think i read that the story of the song involved the struggles of unemployment during the 1930s American depression. The Dust Bowl. You mentioned the 1980s unemployment in the UK which i lived through being from the Uk.
Would love to see you react to Family Snapshot by Peter Gabriel one of the best stories ever told through a song and the ending will never not make the hairs on skin stand up
Depression America theme. His first choice for Kate's part was Dolly Parton, who turned him down. He was probably looking for an authentic southern states accent.
When the song was written, many thousands of Brits had to leave the UK for work. Maggy Thatcher's monetarist policy destroyed huge swaths of industry and communities. There was a fantastic comedy/drama at the time called 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet' that summed up the era.
@@winnywinIt was inspired by the photographs Peter Gabriel saw in Dorothea Lange's book 'In This Proud Land' showing 'dust bowl' depression hit America. He saw a correlation between that time and what was happening in 80s Britain and this beautiful song was born.
It is true that people associate this track with Margaret Thatcher's 80s policies, whether it was meant as a comment on those or not. Another song that points the finger at her is Only Losers Take The Bus by Fatima Mansions, reputedly based on a quote from her.
@InsignificantNick Couldn't help but smile when you said about Peter and Kate, you have to listen to the director of the music video talk about the track. This is 10cc's Lol Creme If the time code doesn't take you directly there it's 10m46s ua-cam.com/video/cOhuYEZqgCg/v-deo.html
Absolutely love their voices together and Peter's is especially touching. This has had me tearing up since 1986. Every time.
Kate Bush is magnificent
Such a beautiful, haunting song.

Was it Paul Buchanan who sang Let's go out Tonight? Heard that on an episode of Six Feet Under and it blew me away.
@@bradshawvincent Yes indeed - with his band Blue Nile. 'The Downtown Lights' is another gem from the same album.

Stunning song stunning vocals
One of his best vocal performances IMHO.
such a great song that connects me to my 80s childhood cosyness ❤❤❤

Great reaction. One of my faves. ❤ You should do more Peter Gabriel. He and Sinead O'Connor with "Blood of Eden." Wow!
I'll second that. Blood of Eden is an incredible song.
Next try the Peter Gabriel Laurie Anderson collaboration, Excellent Birds
This one cuts deep, especially the first half.
Would love to see you react to Family Snapshot by Peter Gabriel one of the best stories ever told through a song and the ending will never not make the hairs on skin stand up
La voix de Kate Bush est unique ! La reprise de "Another Day" qu'elle chante avec Peter Gabriel vous le démontrera.
Should try ‘army dreamer’ by Kate … such an unusual track but very beautiful

@@winnywinindeed! The miners strike had just finished. I think this had a lot to do with the sentiment.
Hello, check out Department S is vic there ? A classic punk/new wave 80s hit. Cheers.

Gets you right in the feelz don't it Nick? :)
Yes it does!
Peter Gabriel comes from money and went to Charterhouse.
So did Mike Rutherford and tony Banks.
Phil Collins and Steve Hackett were working class.

This video was not long at all. Things take the time they take.
I could easily listen to another three minutes of the fade out with the bass and hi-hats. That river flows.
