Two thumbs up! I thought ya did good, you just forgot your boat. memories to last a lifetime, that's what its all about when you get old and look back.
Been there done that, got rolled before a 18 footer, rolled up, went over the falls backwards and praying, the swim was short, I still get a spike of adrenaline just thinking about it
Well for what it's worth, Robin, your experience serves as a learning experience for me... trying to think through what's happening... I appreciate you sharing this and the other version you posted with the break-down.
What was the temperature? You could have gotten into some serious shit, nice self rescue. Half point minus for missing the roll in the first place though 😊
It was spring so the air temp was warm, maybe 80’s and water temp was probably in the mid 50’s. Not at all bad for a drysuit. I had just chased down a runaway raft and was exhausted, I was planning on eddieing out there to rest when I found the seam. The roll was shit, all muscle no technique and panicked. Some how I thought I could swim before I entered the rapid but when I came out of my boat I was on top of a rock and the boat didn’t come off me right away so by the time I was out and orientated I was entering the rapid and was screwed. Good learning lesson though and I made it through without even a bruise. Just the ego and a long difficult scramble back to the bridge. And my boat ran the rest of the river without me🤦🏻♂️
This was in the spring, so it’s not going to get much warmer. I’d just chased down a raft and was exhausted so I’d agree that both my skills where effected but I’d love your input on what I could have done better during the swim.
I had to watch the video again. I was a raft guide for years. Paddling for 40 years. To improve your swim, actually swim! Turn over on your belly and swim, the water was definitely deep enough. Every boater needs to learn how to aggressively save yourself in the rapids. Before I had a bomb proof roll I swam a lot but I self rescued my boat and myself. Never needed assistance. Your paddling group could have been more helpful as well. It is a great hobby so keep at it.@@robinclifton1719
My paddle hit me in the side while I was catching my breath so I grabbed it and tossed it on shore. My boat on the other hand slowly drifted past me and ran the rest of the river without me. It even made it through mother load falls. The next morning I mounted a rescue mission and found it just above the take out on shore. Only lost a water bottle and sponge so I’m quite happy with the outcome.
@@robinclifton1719 You "can" swim using your paddle. It's not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you're bumping rocks in a drop but it works pretty well.
There was actually a group of rafters with me that day and one of them threw a bag. You can actually see it land inches from me if you slow it down. I heard it land in the water beside me but just didn’t register what the sound was until it was too late. I actually looked back at it but it was too late.

My first class V solo body kayak decent
Excellent camera work! I've rarely seen the action right at river level so well documented.
I don’t think many people want to capture footage like this, I know I don’t want to again
Sarcasm?

Great scouting & swimming 😉. Glad you made it to the eddy
As am I. It was a long swim
THAT was a rough swim! But- any paddle trip you can still drive home from is still a good day on the river!
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger... and smarter!😅
Jaysus! That looked nightmarish! Glad you were okay 👍

you're ok, that's what counts. 😊

@@robinclifton1719 Watching the video you got away cheap it was far nastier than I ever had (of course paddling in Soca Slovenia III-IV max)
I have a lot of similar stories. 😂
We all swim.
Swim to be proud of
Really? Swimming is nothing to be proud of...
So, did you have fun?
Always! But this was my biggest and scariest swim up to that point. But I was back on the same section the next weekend
BodyRafting😂
Maybe wait for warmer weather. Your boating and swimming skills both need to improve.

What happened to your kayak and paddle?

Yikes that’s a bad swim. & no safety in sight. Way to self rescue
