    Great review and comparison bro. I do like how the Gearwrench set is compressed and doesn’t take up a lot of space. The Capri set is nice as well. Very heavy duty but it does seem large. Not that it’s a bad thing since most will probably put them on rails. Wish it had a non quick release ratchet but that’s just me personally. Great job keep it up

      Thanks, Tony. The compact layout of the Gearwrench case does it for me.

    I have the gearwrench 3/8 120xp and the 1/4 90t socket sets and two husky brand mechanic tool sets the h149mts, and the h194 mts and the complete sae and metric shallow and deep well socket set including ratchet extension and the breaker bar in the lid by tekton is probably my favorite set other than the gearwrench mechanic tool sets.. because of the no skipping sizes

    Both of these sets look good. I've been wanting to try out some Capri stuff for a while, but I've yet to wear out my 20 year old Craftsman mechanic set. 101 sockets crammed into a carry case is the ultimate in compact storage.

    Excellent review. I was checking out the Astro 1/4 chrome swivel set, but the finish on the Capri one does seem nicer, and they actually have the sizes stamped instead of laser etched.

    Great Video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 One thing I find funny and you said it AND all most everyone say it when it comes to a socket set.. (it’s a good set to have in the car) as a professional mechanic I can’t think of one thing you’re going to be able to fix along side the road in the middle of no where broken down with your socket set in your car!! Think about it 🤔🤔🤔🤔😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 NOPE... Keep at your house and use your tools NOT in your car were you can’t use it along side the road with~~~~~~~~~~~ NO PARTS to fix it. Tow it home and fix it with your tools 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Correction: GearWrench today is where Craftsman was 45-50 years ago (not 20-25).
    During the early 1970s, craftsman tools were still made in the USA, their ratchets were fine tooth, wheel and their sockets were --v-- type. All the stuff today is made in China and its quality is generally poor. Nice review!

    • @jeffnorbert1871
      @jeffnorbert1871 4 роки тому

      @Mister Myxlplyx Craftsman did have a "fine tooth" ratchet. Round head. Not teardrop. Don't remember how many teeth. Don't remember ever seeing them in any socket sets.

  • @AP-oj7fl

    The case look similar to the one that came with the Capri 3/8 master impact socket set. The case is not as sturdy as it looks. One of the corner came off when I knocked the case over while rushing to clean up. The corners are held in place by plastic pins underneath the corner pieces. They snap into the holes in the main case. The plastic pins were slightly deformed so they don't fit as snug. So, every once in a while, the corner piece comes off. The case is still functional, i.e. the sockets are still protected. Just slightly inconvenient to have to snap the corner back on.
    I agree ... Tool Discounter's prices are very good.

    A lot of people talk bad about China craftsman. I started w the 108pc mechanic set in the plastic case. I’ve used and abused the shit outta that thing. Never broke a socket still have it today. It hasn’t had an easy life neither I live in Erie pa and there’s tons of rust here. Yes we’re in the rust belt and get hammered w lake effect snow. My first set of hex etc was the craftsman I’ve never broke any of those neither. I replaced it w the vim mms64 due to sizes missing I needed. The vim is far far better. The newer China ratchets suck ass but the sockets are great. For anyone starting out though it served me and still serves me well. Great vid lee 👍🏼👍🏼 I don’t like that Capri ratchet. Bearded Seabee has had the good Capri ratchets for a year and no issues best part they are cheap. I have a ton of stuff now but ya gotta start somewhere.

    • @Brett_S
      @Brett_S 3 роки тому

      You do realize the rust belt refers to a social/economical reference and literally has nothing to do with "rust"?
      I take that back. It does have to do with the demise of old factories left to rust by being open to the elements...so I can see your comparison in those regards.

  • @nicholasbrown6481

    I bought the Gearwrench metric and SAE reversible ratcheting wrench sets, but China-made. The 1/2" ratchet mechanism fell apart on its first use, fortunately I was able to warranty it. I've used the other wrenches and have had issues of the ratchet mechanism locking up. I won't buy anything else from Gearwrench. Capri being a California based company turns me off on sending any of my money to them. I've heard that Tekton tools are becoming the "Craftsman" of today as well. I have the 1/4" drive ratchet and socket set with shallow and deep sockets and no skipped sizes. I have used it many times with no issues.

    • @mlke4258
      @mlke4258 5 років тому +1

      Donald Hollums The Gearwrench warranty procedure is absolute rubbish. If you don’t have a distributor in your area with your exact tool you are looking to warranty, you are in for quite the process mailing them back to apex.. The tools are not all that great. Tekton are just okay. The ratchets are junk. The sockets- I have blown a few out with not a bunch of torque.. The warranty for Tekton is probably the easiest, and most convenient.. My favorite ratchet is the Craftsman extreme grip. I wish they made it longer, and with a flex head.. It’d be perfect!

    • @donaldhollums3278

      Mike C great tips! I tried to return the two Gearwrench sets back to Advance Auto Parts for my dissatisfaction with the wrenches. I had my receipt, but the store clerk told me because the wrenches were only in the storage racks and not included with the open case they came in I couldn’t return the wrenches. I just said, “okay”. No more money for Gearwrench and no more money for Advance Auto Parts. I bought those wrench sets as Father’s Day gifts. The two Tekton sets were birthday gifts. I’ve used them, but not consistently enough to have any issues with them. Personally, I prefer not to order any tools from Amazon or places like that. If I got to warranty any of them, I’d rather go back to the store I bought them from.

    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  5 років тому

      I have warrantied several gearwrench items in the last year-and-a-half and it's been a very easy process.

    • @mlke4258
      @mlke4258 5 років тому

      mdlee52 I’d rather not have to warranty a tool at all. If your finding yourself constantly warrantying tools, I think it’s time to consider changing. I ordered this same exact 3/8” Gearwrench kit in your video here. Right out of the plastic wrapped box- the stubby ratchet is buggered.. Go to napa- they don’t have it, and they can’t get it. Grainger- Same thing. Call Gearwrench- they would “consider” warrantying it after I pay to send it to them, where they make a determination if it’s eligible for warranty.
      I’m slowly replacing my Tekton stuff with what I originally thought to have been better quality Gearwrench stuff.. Based on this warranty process/hassle- I think I need to re-evaluate that decision..
      In my line of work I break stuff. I have literally TONS of tools. I have a barn with a complete SK mechanic set. I have a service truck with the suspension basically bottomed out with all the tools I have in it. I never like to say that I have “all” the tools I need, because everyday I find myself needing some other odd ball specialty tool. When I don’t have it, I try to make it- that’s how things get busted. I’ll admit that almost every tool I have personally broken- I was using it outside of its scope. Like- on the end of a long pipe perhaps.. But when stuff is defective right out of the box, coupled with them giving me a head time with getting it warrantied.. I’m gonna have to quit them.. Maybe stay with Tekton, and their crap ratchets..

    • @mlke4258
      @mlke4258 5 років тому +1

      Donald Hollums The Tekton sets are adequate for sure. I have a lot of Tekton tools. Them ratchets though!! My 3/8 ratchet changes direction on you if you even look at it the wrong way.. I actually took a 3/8 shittsburgh composite ratchet, and swapped the guts out into the Tekton ratchet. The parts are identical. The weak point in the Tekton are the retention springs. They are waaayyy too flimsy. Again, Tektons warranty process is probably one of the best in terms of their willingness to help swap your defective stuff out..

    Only thing Capri needs to do with that set is throw in their premium ratchet. The ratchet they have works, and has worked well since I’ve had my set, it’s just the only down fall in that set that I can see. Maybe including an 8mm deep would be beneficial as well, but just changing out the ratchet would make a world of difference. Although that big ratchet has a way better ‘hammer side’ than the Gearwrench. I do like that Gearwrench includes the stubby ratchet. That was always one of the reasons I liked that set when I had it.

      Does the pearhead fit inside the case in the ratchet spot? That would be cool if they expanded those ratchet to have other handles. Its like a williams priced fine tooth ratchet.

    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  5 років тому

      Good points. I can't tell whether or not the Gearwrench, Husky, Silver Eagle, and/or Duralast sets are made at the same facility. I do know that the first three sets I just listed are closely related, however. I may not have mentioned it in this video, but I have mentioned in other videos that Capri tools can be bought through Home Depot's website. I think any of the brands I just mentioned would be very good choices for a DIY ER. I would probably just end up going with whatever I could get the best deal on. Other people in the comment section have mentioned Tekton... I think that's another good choice. Thanks for your comment.

    I do not agree w gearwrench being the new craftsman. Go ahead and call them to try a warranty claim. I got denied on a brand new wrench. Took it to sears yes we still have one I needed my receipt. I do not save receipts never had to for ANY other tool. They say call them so I did the lady said sorry sir we can’t help you. From that day forward I’ll never buy gearwrench again. Now that was my experience not everyone’s is the same. Moral of my story vid you buy it watch yourself. ESP when buying it offline you’re screwed.

      I've had two warranty to gearwrench wrenches within the last 18 months. One was warrantied through Napa, the other one directly through gearwrench. Neither warranty claim posed any problem.

    Both made in Taiwan? Probably same factory. Gear Wrench 1/2" drive cr-mo impacts that are "made in china" are worthless, they break like glass. Kinda bothers me now a days to hear someone say "Gear wrench makes" or "husky makes" or "pittsburgh makes", None of those companies make ANYTHING, the 100+ companies just find the ~30 suppliers and put their brand on them. It seems more accurate to say "Gearwrench rebrands good source tools for the most part" or "Matco rebrands good tools".

      Both Taiwanese. I'm thinking different manufacturers.

    That case is huge. And I hate when the skip any sockets. I agree that they should start at 6mm. And for the knurling, you can grip it with your fingers to spin it off by hand
