The Rudra veena -also called Bīn in North India-is a large plucked string instrument used in Hindustani classical music, especially dhrupad. It is one of the major types of veena played in Indian classical music, notable for its deep bass resonance.
According to oral tradition, Shiva created the rudra vina, with the two tumba resonator gourds representing the breasts of either his wife Parvati or the goddess of arts and learning Saraswati, and the long dandi tube as the merudanda, both the human spine and the cosmic axis.The length of the fretted area of the dandi is traditionally given as nine fists-the distance from the navel to the top of the skull.
Baha'ud'din Mohiuddin Dagar is the rudra veena player and son of famous north Indian musician Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. He plays rudra veena with the dagarbani style. He represents the 20th generation of Dagar lineage, referring to Nayak Haridas Dagar of the 16th century.
Rishikesh Music Festival is an annual music festival held in the Himalayan foothill area of Rishikesh, India, beside river Ganga. The line-up of this festival includes a mix of established and emerging, sub-continental and global artists.
The second edition of Rishikesh Music Festival was organised by Kutani Handpan Academy under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava.
The main aim of Rishikesh Music Festival includes promotion of Rishikesh as a global Centre for music learning and music production, promotion of Musical Tourism in Rishikesh, showcase and document intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
