  • Hi WORLD CHANGERS!!! This is a topic that I have been meaning to discuss here on my channel. I wanted to share my perspective on being departmentalized on the elementary level. It is very common in upper grades and honestly I couldn't find content when I was looking for guidance earlier in my career. I hope this video is helpful. PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTION OF THE DAY! I love talking with everyone in the comment section below. Feel free to like and share this video with your friends or a teacher you believe would benefit from this information. Continue to T.I.C. On

I'm currently teaching Pre-K and have accepted a position as a 3rd grade teacher and will be departmentalized. These tips were so helpful in just getting an idea of how to wrap my mind around this very new transition. Thank you!

So I’ve been departmentalized every year I’ve been teaching except one year. I have taught third grade math and science, fourth grade math and science, fourth and fifth grade math and science, and just one year of being self-contained in fifth grade. This upcoming year, I will be self-contained in fourth grade at a new school.
I must say that your pro and con list is spot on, and I agree with you. I am not looking forward to planning all subjects again, but I am looking forward to being with my students all day. That was really the largest benefit of being self-contained.
I hope this doesn’t sound bad, but I would much rather be departmentalized. I feel like I’m best when I have a few subjects to plan. I have time to go in depth with my standards and really be on top of my content. However, when I have to plan for a lot of subjects, something goes lacking or I am only able to scratch the surface of the content. The year I was departmentalized, it was science that went lacking a little.
This year, since I have the most experience in fourth grade, I am extremely comfortable with the math and science content, so my primary focus during planning this year will be reading, writing, and social studies. I need to build my capacity and understanding of those particular subjects. I actually did a “jam up” job teaching reading and writing the year I was self-contained, but I wasn’t 100% comfortable with those subjects like I am with math and science. I know those subjects backwards and forwards and could plan and teach those in my sleep as I have had time to dig deep into that content.
I said all that to say that I am fine either way; I love teaching children! However, my preference is to be departmentalized.

Bowtie Teacher thank you for sharing your experience. If I ever teach math or science I will reach out to you!
Like you said at the end, at the end of the day it’s about being in the classroom. That’s our true passion! Being departmentalized just allows us to dig a bit deeper. Again, thank you sharing🤗

I was departmentalized for one year servicing gifted and talented students in grades 2-4 . I taught reading/social studies and my partner taught math/science. I agree with all your pros/cons. As the reading teacher for primary grades I often felt as though I never had enough time especially when trying to create a balanced literacy block for the primary grades. It was still an amazing experience because my partner and I worked so well together and we both felt that the 2nd graders are better serviced in self contained classrooms. I really enjoy your channel, you
have excellent content . I also love that we are beginning to see more African American educators on UA-cam ❤️

jaya0562 I know! The teacher UA-cam community is definitely becoming more diverse. I agree that there are students that benefit from being self contained. Transitioning can be a distraction at times. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience.
