I didn't know about this until about 12 years ago I guess when I heard a La Bouche song and said, I wonder what ever happened to them and looked it up. I was very saddened to learn of Melanie Thornton's tragic fate, and that of everyone else lost on the flight.
WTF! After all those incidents he was still allowed to continue flying, makes me wonder how many other unqualified pilots might be up there in the sky right now
There must not be that many given air crashes have become pretty rare now. They are more likely to happen in South American countries these days according to what happened these last ten years.
There are some idiots who slipped thru the cracks I'm sure. We have seen it here in the U.S. too. The majors are very hard to get hired by if you can't get thru the rigorous training. But there is always an exception.

Hello. I`m from Switzerland and i remeber the day it happend. Bassersdorf Zurich 24. November 2001.
On board was also the US-singer Melanie Thornton. Her song "wonderful dream" was on heavy rotation on swiss radiostations at this time.
Her last album (may 2001) was titled "ready to fly"

What a damn shame... Pilot error yes, but a BAe 146 which is one of the quietest jet airliners ever built, being switched to a VOR/DME approach in poor visibility to satisfy a noise ordinance was absurd.

Swiss residents on average are the wealthiest in the world... and Zurich is Switzerland's richest city; it's lousy with millionaires. Wealth can influence local laws and ordinances --- and buy some quiet.
Perhaps the airline should have scheduled the flight to arrive before 10.00 pm. Which seems a reasonable time to me.

the crash was into trees which slowed the impact considerably.
My mums friend survived, she told me what happened but all I can remember is that one of the wings fell of and she said she went through the hole. She was on fire though and the burn marks are still there

Wait... he retracted a gear while on the ground? I didn’t know that was possible. Thought there were sensors as interlocks. He wasn’t fired. That’s nuts.
You are not wrong at all.
Yes, there is a "squat switch" which sense the weight of the aircraft resting on the wheels. This switch is disabling the gear up selection while the aircraft is on the ground. However, there IS a "Pilot Override" button....
Basically, you can use this function as your last resort emergency braking system. If you encounter poor braking action and can't stop your aircraft, you push that override button and select Gear Up. The gear then retracts, and you now have all the braking action you can wish for.
I am not making this up, they teach us some rather nifty things in the Air Force.
Clearly, Captain Lutz was never Air Force, because he didn't know this.
I was briefly on SAAB 340, the type which he crashed while on the ground, so have heard the details of the "Legend of Lutz" :
He was instructor on the 340, but did apparently not have much technical knowledge.
Lutz entered a bet with a pilot on his training course. The bet was "What happens if you select gear up while on the ground ?"
Lutz said "Nothing, the interlock will prevent the actuators from operating!!"
There was only one way to settle the dispute. They got on the flight line, in a parked 340. And to prove his point.....Lutz pulled the Gear Selector handle....which didn't budge, because it was locked due to the squat switch sensing the weight of the aircraft resting on the wheels. So, to release that darn handle, and to be able to physically move the selector to Gear Up.....Captain Lutz pressed the Override button.....and lost his bet....

He tried to show his student that after pulling the cirquit braker, one could STILL not get the gear to raise. He was wrong. He had some head injury from the overhead panel, but he was not fired.

@@thefreedomguyuk I hadn't heard that -- unreal stupidity. Reminds me of the Russian captain (Alexander Klyuev) who made a bet with his copilot that he could land the plane blind. The bet was accepted and the cockpit blinds deployed so the captain could not see outside. He crashed and flipped the plane and 70 people died in the ensuing inferno. His copilot died of cardiac arrest in hospital but Klyuev survived and was sentenced to 15 years in prison (he was released after serving 6 years).

They weren't "captain" hours, they were PIC hours - it's possible he built up a lot of hours flying single-crew aircraft before going straight to captain in a multi.

An inexperienced air traffic controller was alone in the control tower. A more experienced controller could have allowed the flight to land on runway 14 because of the poor weather conditions. (The final report of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB, German acronym BFU) states also this as a factor that contributed to the accident.
This was because due to poor weather conditions at the time of incident, the runway 28 cannot be use for landing.
Someone probably called the cops to report the noise from the plane crashing.

Lost one of the best techno bands from the 90s as well, a terrible loss to the music world.
The last minute switch from the fully equipped STRAIGHT approach to runway 14 to the complex approach of seldom used runway 28 which was NOT equipped with ILS, was the major factor that caused this flight to crash. The approach to 28 was four times longer than 14 and required a 180' change in direction sandwiched between 2 minor direction corrections. 28 was rarely used because of its complexity and outdated VOR/DME instrumentation. It was nighttime with poor visibility and bad weather. This last minute switch of runways must have been a nightmare for the experienced captain with weak flying credentials. ATC NEVER SHOULD HAVE SWITCHED THE FLIGHT TO RUNWAY #28 in those conditions. The safety of airline passengers should supersede a few extra minutes of sleep for those living close to an airport.
With his difficulties navigating, this captain might have made a habit of turning over actual flying in difficult situations to seasoned co-pilots under the guise of "teaching" them or giving them more experience. He couldn't do that here with a new co-pilot with only 480 hours of flying time so he was likely busy dealing with the left-right corrections on the old VOR/DME system and he forgot about ALTITUDE for a few seconds and there was no early warning. ILS has an altitude warning. Captain probably thought he was still on ILS system for a second or two. The ILS provides BOTH horizontal and VERTICAL guidance as well as angle of descent for best speed to land but there was no ILS on this rarely used runway 28.
Runway 28 was rarely used because of Its twists and turns and lack of new equipment. It would be difficult to navigate with any technology. The moment noise restrictions were placed on runway 14, new technology should have been applied to runway 28. Runway 14 is STRAIGHT and simple. How could this airport have FAILED to UPGRADE runway 28 to the best ILS system when it was so treacherous? The lesser technology of 28 plus the increased difficulty of navigating a horrendous approach without ILS at nighttime in a storm was a huge contribution to this crash but all was attributed to pilot error.
How could ATC redirect this flight to such a treacherous runway 28 at night in a storm when its instrumentation lacked an altitude indicator or warning? ILS works in "O" visibility - indicated for these conditions. ATC should have kept to the original flight plan and guided the flight to land safely on runway 14 as planned and ignored the 2 minutes past the noise restriction.
ILS for runway 28 approaches would have alerted a stressed out captain to his dangerous low altitude and allowed him time for a go-around. Early Warnings of low altitude BENEATH the minimum descent altitude (MDA) are absent for non-precision landings with VOR/DME.
Was there also some confusion between the reported 2,400' MDA (above sea level) and the reported 1,000' altitude which is below the actual MDA? The airplane continued to descend past the MDA while visual reference was still questionable.
In non-precision landings like those directed by VOR/DME, the MDA MINIMUM DESCENT ALTITUDE is the lowest permissible altitude ABOVE SEA LEVEL of approved descent until visual contact is made. The pilot and co-pilot both said they had visual contact but neither sounded definite. The DESCENT CONTINUED until a low altitude warning sounded at "500" feet - minimum. Captain ordered a go-around but it was too late. The altitude was probably incorrect as well.
I'd put most blame for this crash on the ATC and the airport; ATC for last minute redirection of this flight onto a poorly equipped seldom used complex runway, difficult to navigate in the best of conditions, and the airport for not upgrading 28 the moment new noise restrictions went into effect. How could ATC make such a change just 2 minutes past the noise deadline at night in a snowstorm? NO COMMON SENSE.

Saw this story in a one hour show on TV recently about plane crashes and it was based on their extensive investigation, black boxes and cockpit voice recordings and it went into great detail showing just how incompetent this Captain truly was. Listening to the dialog between the Captain and First Officer you found yourself wondering how in the world this man had made Captain and kept his rating and had even been a training instructor as well. This Captain truly didn't know what he was doing and the First Officer was very new and had only a few hundred hours experience and 24 people lost their lives because of it. Thank goodness 21 passengers never made the plane as planned. Flight Channel this is another great video.

Seriously, I know Switzerland isn't a big place so people might be forced to live near an airport but holy shit is that a stupid way of handling it. Yeah, let's put the ILS equipment on a runway we can't legally use at night when it's most needed... I've lived under an approach path to a huge international airport for over a decade and I slept like a fucking baby even with A380s flying overhead so I'm really confused why the complaints of a few light sleepers were given more weight than the safety of the flying public.

According to German Wikipedia, Jacqueline Badran, Swiss deputy, and her college, only decided to sit at the end part of the plane because they were annoyed by the members of the pop group "Passion Fruit", of which 2 of the 3 members died. The end part of the airplane remained mostly undamaged. Later Badran apparently stated that the members of the pop group saved her life.

I've watched almost all of your important re-enactment videos and many of them really depress me because of the often preventable loss of human life, but this one really, really made me horribly sad. I was a fan of LaBouche and I've known that Melanie died in a plane crash, but to just randomly watch one of your videos and to get the shocking realization that this video was a depiction of her last moments was very, very depressing to me.. I cry for all the victims of these disasters which are ,more often than not, preventable but this one really hit me hard.
Keep revealing the causes of these accidents with your re-enactment videos. They are helping to bring awareness of pilot error and mechanical limitations, and so, by your efforts you are saving lives..
Where was ATC/Ground Control in all of this ? Surely they must have been monitoring the flight and it's altitude and position ?

Maybe they should let their pilots get more sleep between flights if they don't want any close calls. Also maybe at night in the mountains in a snowstorm, maybe they should have let the plane land using instruments, instead of making them do a visual approach on a different runway so they wouldn't fly over any houses and keep anyone awake.

Aside from the pilot idiocy, imagine if there's no noise law; the incident can be prevented. This noise law is so weird,, i mean that's "the airport", so what do you expect from that? Electric plane without a noise??? 🤦♂️
When I was a teenager I complained about an Air Force base a few miles from our house. They had hot shot pilots breaking the sound barrier and causing sonic booms that would almost break the glass in our house. My complaints worked. The Air Force stopped their reckless pilots from exceeding the sound barrier over residential areas. But the noise from an airplane landing is nothing compared to a sonic boom. There definitely should have been an exemption to that law. Safety should always be the number one consideration.
I know commercial aircraft are a lot quieter than jets breaking the sound barrier but they are still loud. Airports should be built miles from populated areas. And residential areas should not be allowed to be built next to airports. I see a lot of runways butted up against neighborhoods. That’s a disaster waiting to happen.
The well being of people should always trump capitalistic greed.

I'll actually say this was equally much the guy in the right seat screwing up. The purpose of a monitoring pilot is to relieve the flying pilot of the controls, should the latter act erratically. The PM did not take control here.

One survivor thanked his survival due to Passion Fruit basically. They were very loud and annoyed the passenger. He moved to the back.
Of the group Passion Fruit just one member survived.
And that member is physically fucked up for life.

Does anyone else besides me think that discontinuing a safer, more established ILS runway...at night...in the mountains...with bad weather...because of alleged noise issues...was a seriously f**king bad idea?!? This airport should have eaten 50% of the blame for this occurrence.

Due to bad weather and lack of ILS, the runway 28 can’t be used but probably a learner(At that time) fail to notice it.

I remembered that flight very well. It was all over the European and national radio airwaves. Melanie Thornton of LaBouche was a talented singer back in the 90s. It is sad that she died because the pilot didn't know what the hell he was doing. He shouldn't fly up there period. Also Passion Fruit was one of the top tier eurodance groups in Europe. RIP to that group and the other passengers on that fateful flight.
Or because of a noise ordinance. Likelihood is if they used runway 14 they would have landed safely.

The safety investigation made no mention of the unnecessarily bureaucratic law that forced the pilots to alter their entire plan to a poorly equipped runway in inclement weather conditions only shortly before landing?

I missed the flight because I was in another country and never bought a ticket for this flight.
@@Bravo-Too-Much A guy is used to know missed a crash because a business partner who had seen him off at the airport suggested he take a later flight and the should have a drink and chat at the airport bar. The crash, btw, was due to poor cockpit ressource management (captain is the boss, and copilot shut up) and poor flight instrument maintenance.

Indeed. This accident has touched me the most of all airline accidents because of death of La Bouche's singer Melanie. :( I have seen La Bouche a few times afterwards and every time I thought this accident and how horrible the situation must have been for her and of course for all the other passengers and crew too. Very sad incident. :'(

I wonder a bit how this captain became captain with such lapses in performance.

We all have this image of ultra professional pilots.... then after disasters like this and the recent PIA crash you realise a percentage of these pilots shouldn’t be flying!!!
We also have this image of high tech airports with modern equipment and the best technology... then after disasters like this you realize the airports are making pilots land visual only in a snowstorm at night in the mountains, instead of on the runway with sophisticated equipment in because of “noise restrictions.”

Thank you, TFC, for another incredibly well put together and well done educational show. Hard to believe 2001 was nearly 20 years ago now. For me, 9/11 still frequently feels like yesterday. In a way, I'm rather glad you've never done a recreation of 9/11. I lost friends. It will probably always be very painful for me and for many, not only here in the US, but worldwide. The Towers were an international centre. People from all over the world came to work there.
BTW, thank you also for always putting the time on a 24 hour clock. My dad is retired Navy, and everything in our house was run on military time. It was years before I even knew what a 12 hour clock was, and to this day, they still confuse the heck outta me! When I worked in medicine, we used military time in the hospital, and I was much more comfortable with it. So, thanks again!
Just FYI, Aviation runs on a 24-hour clock. Not only that but all of aviation runs on the *same* 24-hour clock Universal Time, [UTC] or Greenwich Mean Time [GMT] aka Zulu.
So 23:59 UTC is the same in central Canada where it might actually be 6 p.m. [1800] local or in London where it would be one minute before midnight local time.
This way no one flying has to do mental gymnastics with time zones or whether it is daylight savings time or not. If we depart at 1300 for a 4 hour flight, our ETA [estimated time of arrival] is 1700 whether we're flying straight north and remaining in the same time zone or flying straight west and crossing two or three time zones that may or may not be utilizing daylight savings time.
@@suestoons thank you!😊 Yes, my dad specialized in Naval aviation, so that's why I was taught a 24 hr. clock. I have a lot of friends all over the world, and a lot of them don't use daylight saving time. Using military time just makes my life easier. To this day, 12 hour clocks still confuse me!😅
This runway got ILS pretty soon after the crash. A local politician escaped the crash unhurt with her friend as they had moved to the very rear of the cabin due to excessive noise by the folks sitting in the front. They got up from their seats, stumbled thru the woods, walked to a nearby village, went into the restaurant, and ordered coffee. That's cool behaviour.
it's amazing that they just asked them to land on a closed runway with less precise technology at night just over noise ... Is noise more important than safety ?
- The runway wasn't closed.
- The pilot could have refused.
- Was the pilot's pride, lack of planning and incompetence more important than the safety of his passengers?

What is scary about this, is the fact the Captain had made so many mistakes prior, had endangered the lives of so many people, yet his casual arrogance and incompetence finally caught up with him. It's unfortunate those souls were lost on board. It just goes to show how you never really know the background of a pilot when you get on board. Horrific loss. Xx

He was NOT a good man in any way.
The Mad Dog is more complex to fly than the Scarebus. The Mad Dogs actually is loved by it's aircrews and have outstanding flight characteristics compared to the Airbus. . I am rated on the MD80. 737 and 777. I can't post pictures or I'd show you the inside of the Airbus. I don't care for them personally and the controls don't provide feedback like the Boeing/ Mc Donnell-Douglas aircraft.

A good example to show that number of hours not always good indication of the pilot's professionalism
So this pilot really was allowed to keep flying after all these near misses? Smh it was only a matter of time before some shit like this happened
The cause of this crash is first they confused are they have ground contact or not. 2. The bad whether. 3. They go down to find MDA to long. 4. The captain say 'go around' but it was to late because the pilot cant see anything.
"Do we have ground contact?"
"No, but we will in a few minutes."
Yet another case of total incompetence. What the hell??? And the 21 passengers who didn't board are very suspicious. They know something that we don't.

@dobromeister GPWS is a type of TAWS and comes as standard on pretty much all commercial aircraft. So that point makes no sense to me.
That said, the rest of the points are pretty compelling. While I do still feel that pilot error was the primary cause, the other points mentioned are pretty hefty. Do you have a link to the report ?

With regards to runway 28 being upgraded, the pilots should have had the skill to do a VOR/DME approach in those conditions. This is one of the several types they are drilled on in training and should be bread and butter work for any pilot worth their salt.

swissair flight 306 would also be an interesting crash to cover, it's considered the most tragic aircraft crash on swiss soil and basically killed a good portion of a single village, basically most of the working adults, leaving only a few working adults behind and otherwise only children and their grandparents. My Grandparents also died in that crash and it's surprisingly unknown these days even though it basically was in the headlines all over the world when it happened.
