If you going to the park to walk your dog then down is better option from my experience but if you going to walk up hill with rucksack then synthetic is much better option as your jacket will get wet because of sweat but synthetic still keeps you warm...down wouldn't insulate anymore when wet
because it’s about the best, not best value, these brands stand out and cost more because they are better and put more money behind there jackets than most brands, that’s why they are expensive
