Who was the guy with the leaf blower?
His fella
@RingwayManchester>>> 🤭
I can't be the only one who had anxiety at you putting your radio gear on the railing over the water.
Having a large amount of commercial experience with deploying LoRaWAN myself, this is hugely interesting to me and I will definitely be checking Ripple out.
You're lucky to have a friend like Andy who will participate in stuff like this. I don't have any local friends that will play radios with me.
I am but I had to drive 200 miles to do this video haha
Same here
@JohninCle Cleveland, Tennessee? yes. Cleveland ohio? No
Same thing for me here in Sweden. I have seen two other nodes in my town. But no answers ever 😒 and friends not interested. Good luck! And dont give up. I am not going to 😚
So true
Interesting...i have a ham myself, and keep it in an emp bag (just in case, i guess). Looks like something i might add to the collection
There's a large case on Makerworld that will accomodate the 6000mAh battery
It is often said encryption is against the spirit of ham radio. I personally don't subscribe to this perspective, but while doing research on DMR encryption I read a lot of vitriol for the whole concept of using encryption in amateur settings. I'm assuming this particular implementation is at least legal (most countries ban amateur encryption), but would be curious if any similar conversations are happening around it
I'd wait a bit before trusting my life on it and see how secure it is in practice. It won't be the first time an encryption scheme got broken by some side-channel or implementation vulnerability.
Even if the individual messages are strong encrypted attackers could find a way around that by messing with the communications and protocol and read along anyway.
Or that the crypto is properly implemented, or works at all, or that the device firmware isn't hacked in-band or via one it's many transceivers, or hacked at point of distribution, or compromised by an evil developer or via 'rubber hose' coercion.
Security is hard.
77:44 Andy was giving you the finger for making him walk so far.😂
It’s always nice to have a friend who you can go out with and do tests it’s a shame there are not as many young women in the hobbie like myself
I love this channel every episode has something interesting but I especially like the episodes with other people in them like this one. Off to watch Andy's video now 👍
Does the Ripple firmware allow the T-Deck to still access meshtastic nodes for extended communication, or is it a completely separate network? I did notice that the Dev has updated to an "Ultra" version, adding mapping and geoup texting capability among other options, have you looked at these additional capabilities yet?
Yeah. I would happily pay like $300 or more for a polished plug and play product that could do just that. That’s cool.
Still working on wrapping my head around all of the stuff I can do within just ham right now, but that’s an interesting concept for sure.
great to see both yours and Andy's perspectives on the same topic
isnt that a straight up Blackberry keyboard? i could feel the texture 😂
neat but with limited range it's kinda eh... need to be able to reach at least 10-15 miles.
Very cool! Would other Ripple hardware out there necessarily function as repeaters, to pass private messages between folks who've gotten out of direct range of each other?
Ha ha this was like the DVD Director's Commentary of Andy's vid!
😂👍🏻
Great video footage of London btw, especially the planes landing at (city?) airport. Makes me want to go back for my next UK holiday 🥰
This is pretty cool. Another great video in the books
You should do a follow up video with more case options and get it sponsored by PCBway with your friend so we can purchase it internationally
Be good if you can do two way audio as well as text
One time tables generated by a true random source are to my knowledge the only form of encryption that is by definition also genrating a random sequence of values in all asoects egually as random as the table as long as the no prior information between the two parties was exchanged in private and in person and only between two parties at most. No part if the table can be reusused.ever.
This means that also this encryption method is undecipherable by any means possible, quantum or infinite time will bot help. It will merely give all possible messages/sequences. And thoae inclufe the full works ifbshakesspeare the bibble and Pi to arbitrary precision. Nullyfyjng the attempt to gain usefull unfo.
Also after being used up, it must be physically be destroyed. Not merely erased or writen over with other info as that still leaves some info about the original table.
Nowadays datastorage is not that costly anymore, even if in a form of laser etching into fragile materials sacrificing thre data density for certainty of being the completely get rid if the used up info. For plain texts, a llillte table goes a long way. And meetups once in a while are a must anyway.
dude thats a business 😊 be blessed sir ❤
Thanks 👍
I love Andy's channel, too ❣
Clicked on random vid from this channel today (Russian pirate one) and subbed because it was interesting, this came up soon after and not disappointed!
Nice experimentation video. Happy Easter, God bless.
FYI: I think DMs over Meshtastic are currently encrypted with the PSK of the channel that both users share. If the only channel is the LongFast then the message is encrypted with AQ== which anyone can decrypt.
This video isn’t about Meshtastic
My only question is what is the max distance you can get
I'm a bit concerned, I've been hearing and reading a lot about unsafe RF levels off the mesh boards, especially the cheaper ones. I haven't heard you talk about this yet, any thoughts?
And I bet you have a microwave and cell phone that you use
I have flashed the Ripple firmware for the US 915 Mhz, but once i reset the device, it goes into a loop of connecting and disconnecting from the pc i am using to set it up. Did you have a similar experience? Would love to see a step by step to figure out what i missed. The dev just says to give a shout out with issues, but i have not been able to reach him yet. Any additional pointers? Tia
After updating t-deck not visible on Meshtastic app
So can it still use an intermediate relay like meshtastic or are you limited to t-deck to t-deck range
That’s what I was wondering
They remind me of Cybiko Xtreme from 2000
Very cool and secure enough for many applications, but what are those aye
I'm guessing Ripple is a similar network to Meshtastic? I've not heard of it before, to be honest!
Cheers, going to have to do a lot of watching now….. newbie question mate, so I can limit how much to watch, does this work similarity to how you’ve described meshtastic’s ‘nodes’ forwarding thingy-me-bob tech? In the video you referred to meshtastic, as if it was different (hence my ignorant confusion)
What the heck is a "spreading factor"?
It's a parameter that determines how much bandwidth your signal uses. All users need to agree on how they set it to be interoperable (unless there's a discover/adapt function).
Have you a link to the Lily Go board and that so people can buy them?
No guessing who supplied the sound track 😁😁
?
Which printer do you have, Lewis?
Noob here but the frequency setup at the begining is that ti match our region and antenna? For example, im from the US and my antenna i ordered i believe is 915, i would simply select that at that point? Thanks!
Yes, in the US it is a 915 Mhz antenna needed. Ripple and Meshtastic aak for your location (region) so it is set up for the correct band. Ripple actually has a separate firmware for US vs UK band.
@Coyot21 very nice, thanks. I like ripple but I think I'll end up using meshtastic just for the network access of the existing communities and nodes everywhere. Does ripple have anything like that or plan on doing so one day?
These are neat!
My Heltec V3 isn't getting any signals or messages aren't being received! I'm in NW London and meshtastic24/7 map says otherwise.. Any help? using stock antenna.
Are you on the right frequency?
@@RingwayManchesterOn 868.
@@RingwayManchesterLong-Fast 868, I bought and got an 868 Heltec off Aliexpress.
If you’re on the little stock antenna and nobody’s within a mile you’re not likely to get anyone
🤐🍿.... naval history speaks otherwise to rf com's security.... and nowdays the heavy lifting portion can be offloaded to a cloud instance or dedicated hardware, or check any of the recent vids/papers on encryption breaking/modifying being published,
Looked at the thumbnail and instantly thought Blackberry. Click on the video, and that's one fat Blackberry lol.
Spleenware/Ripple seems to be a one or two man band unlike Meshtastic. Also many of their Github files are 4 years old, so project seems to be semi anbandoned?
Nope there’s lots of development in the works as we speak
Oh please don’t give me an excuse to buy another t deck.
Can you retrieve old messages with this system. And can’t wait for open spaces trial
You can scroll up the messages
Ripple? Surely not the fintech solutions provider company that uses XRP as crypto
its so obscure and private you have no one to talk to 😅
Great vid but cant see the link for the software?
Sorted
Can you send messages to email or android apps
These devices are very similar to Blackberry phones
They certainly are
It's all a bit... low tech isn't it? VHF radios for emergency comms, I can get that, but this... All fun and games, but not where I'll put my money.
Gen Z's walkie talkie ...
I have a slightly jaundiced view of secure comms tech in that it is an open invitation to those who mean no good to stay below the radar. We live in a very dangerous world at many different levels with law enforcement and the security services struggling against a lack of resources and an ever increasing workload. As a law abiding citizen I have never felt a compelling need to be off grid. Just saying.
Good for you, if it’s not for you then no big deal, there are legitimate reasons for good people to have secure comms, for example I want to have secure comms during/after a natural disaster to coordinate supplies/movements with much lower risk of robbery. You also seem to place a lot of faith that the government has the best interests of people in mind, they have proven time and time again that giving up security for safety is not a good idea.
"We're here to check your thinking."
If they didn't decide to snoop on everyone's conversations on the planet, they would have far more resources.
For thousands of years we didn't have this level of monitoring.
868 Mhz ?
Different frequency in North America vs Europe
@@personzorz that's why I was wanting to know the range.
The 902 to 928 MHz is open for amateur radio and for low power devices in US.
Cordless phones, baby monitors, TV extenders, etc are used in the 902 to 928 range in America.
Criminals be like 👀
No technology is truly private. Someone will (or likely probably has) fiund ways to intercept and decrypt messages.
It’s aes256…
@@RingwayManchesterI know but don't take anything for granted. Where there's a will, there's a way. We don't know what tools certain three letter agencies have.
Look into aes256
@@EgoChipso don’t get one . Stick with carrier pigeons or something
Thanks for sharing.
Q1: What is aes256?
Q2: Will they work anywhere (not just UK?)
I had flashbacks of my blackberry mouse ball thing going out lol
I never noticed before how much you both look like the police when you're together and playing with radios :)
Im still trying to get to grips with Meshtastic. Is this just a text messaging device❓ Is it the number of nodes determines how far a message can be sent or not❓ What is the max distance you can send from one node to another❓ So if there are many other nodes placed out there can you send a text message sitting at home❓ How do you know which node you are sending to and in what direction❓
That's it.. make HIM do all the walking .... ROFLMAO!! :)
When the baseline drops 🕺
Thanks Lewis, very interesting.
Also interesting: appearing particularly during the outro, is the Millennium Mills building. It's in Orbital's video for The Box from... 1996?
HI! this is a very good video but the CDMA&868 frequency can be generally blocked by jammers right is there any other alternative for this
That's a bloody good zoom on your camera, Lewis. Half a mile away, and sharp as a pin. Impressive.
May I ask what camera and lens you use?
Cheers! It’s the Nikon p1000
That's cool, better to have e-ink display use much less battery to make the unit smaller
hope these devices will improve and we will see some with e-ink.
Why dont they just sell this?... like text Walkie Talkies
I did my Work Experience at Peter Chilvers' windsurfing centre, which was on the slipway of Royal Victoria Docks. It was a blast. This was late 80's, it has changed pretty dramatically since then! I bet you don't see massive rats hanging out near the cranes these days.
Yeeeesssssss meshatstic!!!
Just use One Time Pads so it doesn't matter if MI6, FSB, or the CIA are reading your comms. You do have to make sure your pads are completely random and that you observe good OpSec (but that's a good life rule anyway).
Looks similar to Alley Cat's case - a nice wee case. glow in the dark filament might need purchased lol
Yeah it looks to be, he didn’t credit so I’ve told him to amend. It’s a cool case!
@@RingwayManchester it's a really well designed case. I use it myself.
basicly useless in a city... and would be also useless in nature all the stones, trees. few miles and it's gone. nice to play for the kids in the garden...
this kind of stuff should not be produced. all waste of time.
so is encrypted between the 2 that are paired ? ,other people on the freq cant see the messages ?
Which antenna did you use for your Lilygo t-deck?
Hi, 433Mhz supported ?
Great video!
Black Berry again????
Have you seen the sneak preview of the new Meshtastic firmware for the T-Deck that IS all self-contained? They showed it on an Instagram post... It looks preeeettttyyyyy great...!
how do i get those 😊
Great stuff. Those glow in the dark cases could be handy for emergency comms. I really like you green case. Very military.
73 M7TUD
do you know how to add buzzer to HELTEC® LoRa 32 V3?
I've got one of these, currently running meshtastic, it does need a major rework to utilise the T-Deck hardware, Ripple looks interesting
Getting Session onto Lora Mesh would be great.
Session messaging is one of the free open source truly disposable conversations.
the problem with this is that its easy to detect because it doesnt change the frequency, theres one radio that jumps 20ms which makes it hard to locate. thats good because in a lot of countries its illegal as encrypted and without license. its definitely better than normal ham radio but its still not optimal for shtf scenarios. Great video, i love to educate myself on ways to communicate with new devices and software, great video!
this looks suspiciously like a blackberry curve 🤔
Produced by NSA
The good thing is that you don't have to worry about backing up your messages anymore 😉
The screens way to dark and reflective, needs an upgrade, Ripple has potential tho..
Anyone having issues with T-deck not able to scroll down. I can only scroll left….
Well that's a first
On meshtastic, a guy replied to me saying he was over Bridgend at 35,000 feet
Turns out he's on a plane, even got the flight number in his username
@RingwayManchester he was flying from manchester to porto, you might catch him on the way back, SPD3 is short name
So unlike Meshtastic do the devices need to be paired before they can communicate with each other?
@RingwayManchester >>> Great video...👍
Need a wrist lanyard on that. I was panicking every time you waved it around.
Wow! Andy Kirby did a video on exactly this subject. What a coincidence, man!
Can you display the RSSI value?
What's your opinion on the CardPuter?
They have a project to turn the CardPuter into a Ripple device but not a Meshtastic device (yet)
I know nothing about it Neil I’ll have a look
I did my dissertation on building something similar, pretty cool :)
I absolutely enjoy watching you together testing out radios and other radio tech. Please make more videos together thank you 👍👍
