  • Trek offers a variety of bikes that fit a wide range of needs & interests, but it can get a bit confusing when trying to tell them apart and decide which type of bike is the one for you. We took three different entry level Trek bikes and broke down some of what makes them different and why one may be a better fit over another for someone looking to get a new bike.

    Good video!
    I just ordered a FX2 because my trekking bikes frame broke and I need a ride for the city and road. I was always riding my trekking bike at the top gears and wanted something faster, but I wasn't convinced by a gravel/road bike (because I've never used road bike handlebars). I already got a hardtail for mountains so the FX was the most logical choice for me.
    I also have a friendly Trek dealer just a few hundred meters away from me and he did always a good job fixing my old trekking bike.

      yea, I just tried the FX3 and it didn't feel very comfortable. Quite hunched seating position and a stiff ride. I'll try the Verve, seems like a better option for me too. Maybe it depends on what size you are...

      @@gustavopaulette3496 FX is for those who wants a more sporty ride, there’s a reason it’s called fitness bike (it’s definitely not intended to be for comfort ride). If your rides are mostly around towns, leisurely and occasionally wants fitness ride, then Verve is the best option.

      @@preppen78secret is try to size down one level. If the suggested size for you is medium, size down to small, it’s rideable but the main advantage is you will have a chance to be at upright since the reach is shorter. But offcourse it’s not gonna be as comfortable as the verve still, it’s still a fitness bike and intended for speed/sports

    Awesome review. I went bike shopping over the weekend and originally wanted to get the FX1 but the shop recommended the Verve series. I was a road (Bianchi) and trail rider (still rocking the Trek 7500FX) for years but have nerve damage from a few bike accidents/broken wrists. I think the Verve might be the way to go for me, once I get over the ego bruise of owning a "comfort" bike. Those tires on the Verve...oof. Ego damage.

For me just really starting out, but also don't want to be limited to just pavement as a nice gravel or dirt trail would be nice, of these 3 based on my situation, which would be recommended to start with?

    The newer FX is more gravel bike with wider clearance for knobby tires and the new Dual Sport has no shock and up to 50mm wide (MTB size) tires on smaller 27inch rims. It's ironically more comfortable than a Verve. Verve is a bad deal at any level for what you get but you can sit bolt upright on it which is fun.

    Friends, this guy is knowledgeable, he works at a bike shop, he went to the trouble of making this video, you should definitely consider his viewpoint.
    But I URGE you to get some different viewpoints before spending your hard-earned money. The FX actually IS quite comfortable. It is also lighter than the others, so it’s easier to bike up hills and it’s generally less sluggish compared to the Verve and Dual-sport.
    Front shocks like those on the Dual Sport are HEAVY. They ONLY make a difference if you’re riding on mountain bike trails. If you’re doing a LOT of mountain biking, get a dedicated mountain bike. If you want a general bike that’s okay for occasional mountain bike trails, the Dual Sport is terrific.
    But most of us looking in this segment won’t ride on serious mountain bike trails. The front shock LOOKS like it makes the bike more comfortable, but it doesn’t on pavement and dirt trails, it just adds weight and makes the bike more sluggish.
    The FX is great for dirt trails, pavement, commuting, fitness riding, biking with friends. If your friends have road bikes, you can keep up with an FX more so than with the Verve or Dual Sport. Like the video says, it’s a gateway into road riding. It’s also great for casual riding. The FX has a more comfortable & upright seating position than an actual road bike or a mountain bike. The Verve is even more upright, but IMO too upright. You’re riding a bike, not walking.
    But don’t take my word for it, I’m nobody, I don’t work at a bike shop, I don’t make videos. Judge for yourself. Go to a good bike shop with a decent selection and compare all three (plus, maybe, a road bike in the same price range). Maybe the Verve or Dual Sport are better for you, great! But the FX should be high on your list, friends.

      We put $220 Rockshox Judy’s on the front of my wife’s Dual Sport Electric and my FX Electric and the ride is MUCH more comfortable. The fork soaks up the giant bump at the end of our driveway, speed bumps, uneven sidewalks, etc.

    • @konkretyn
      @konkretyn 2 роки тому +2

      Strongly agree. I've been riding an old Apollo Excel mountain bike before I bought my FX 3 a few days ago, and I can honestly say it's noticeably smoother of a ride even w/o suspension.
      I did consider the DS 3, but as you said the suspension fork just adds weight and doesn't do much for city riding. I've gotten good at keeping my body flexible so I can absorb any bumps with my arms and legs.

    • @beri232
      @beri232 Рік тому +1

      You nailed it brother! I ride in town and on simple gravel roads when we go camping. I tried all these bikes at my bike shops test circuit and ended up going with the Specialized Cirrus X 4.0. Good hardware, light weight, low resistance tires, single crank sprocket and the future shock. Fork suspension looks cool but as someone who had them before…. they are a pain in the ass on pavement and do very little. Pedalling becomes a bit hindering with them and with little payoff so I don’t recommend them at all for in town.

  • @Matasky2010
    @Matasky2010 2 роки тому +7

    The FX is NOT the 'Jack-of-all-trades'- it has no front suspension which means it's a bit too stiff on even the lightest trails, you feel every little undulation and bump, makes for a pretty uncomfortable ride. Which is why I've decided to move to the Dual-Sport, trails make up a good portion of my riding.

    • @dimforest
      @dimforest 2 роки тому +13

      It's absolutely a 'Jack-of-all-trades' in this context. You do not need suspension to withstand bumps or gravel. In fact, plenty of gravel bikes don't even include any suspension at all. The Dual-Sport is marketed as a 'Jack-of-all-trades' but in reality it can be limiting; it's slower than an FX on pavement and the suspension isn't substantial enough to be worthwhile on bigger trails.
      All 3 of these bikes in this space are -by design- 'Jack-of-all-trades' style bikes. Picking between them is just a matter of preference and where you'd like to min-max and squeeze that extra capability: trails, pavement, or comfort. Otherwise, you could literally take all 3 on all the above and have a very similar experience.

    • @Matasky2010
      @Matasky2010 2 роки тому +3

      On the light trails I ride casually I find my FX3 is just too 'rigid' and unforgiving, which has me looking to the Dual Sport. Of course there's a compromise to be found with all these bikes. I have no problem sacrificing some road speed for a much nicer trail ride, I'm not racing anyone on the roads.

    Yes, you could spend thousands of dollars on an eBike ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ and get something much higher quality. However, if you're looking for a basic model to try out eBiking this is a great choice. The assembly is easy as far as bikes go (took about an hour for me to do, I'm not an expert). All tools needed are included. I added the plastic mud guards you see and a more comfortable seat. The other reviews are correct that you're probably going to want a better seat (Giddy Up! Bike Seat is what I got - super comfortable). The battery easily handles a 2-4 hour ride if you add some of your own pedal power. I haven't even gotten it up to top speed yet - it is very fast. Components are not top of the line, but decent for the price and work just fine. It works great on dirt roads and singletrack and pavement although too heavy to do tricks or any serious technical mountain biking. I'm looking forward to using it a lot over the summer. Tons of fun!
