I found a baby male albino mantis crawling on my shoulder one day when I watching UA-cam. Had no idea where he came from but I figured, “hey I know how to care for you! Might as well keep you!” And so I did. I ended up naming him Meroda. Once he got bigger I decided to take him with me to my school and educated a few people on mantises. He was always so calm and chill but didn’t like it when anyone but me held him. He definitely knew I was his caregiver. I swear mantis are the most intelligent insect out there! Such curious and smart little guys hehe. Anyways! During his very last shed something went wrong... I have no idea what did it, but his wings ended up becoming deformed after shedding. They never fixed themselves. But luckily it didn’t affect his lifestyle and actually ended up making it safer! Because like I said, I do take him out and show him to people, and if his wings were fully developed than that meant he would be able to fly off and end up hurting himself. So I guess things ended up working out in the end. And since his shed he ended up becoming to big for his enclosure. I didn’t have anywhere else to put him, but then I had an idea! Since he can’t fly he’ll be perfectly safe on my bamboo! Right inside my tank too! So not only will he be outside his cage with nice fresh air and something to hold onto, the evaporating water makes it plenty moist and humid. :) Sadly Meroda is now gone... He recently died a few months ago. But I grantee you he lived a very happy and healthy life! He even became famous throughout my school and was loved by everyone! Educating others about mantises! It was fun while it lasted. And I won’t ever forget him. 💚 You can find images of him on my Instagram @CornBeanSoup! I even have a video of him here, after his last shed. :)
I love my little Orchid to bits. One of the coolest things about some of them is that when they know you, they will just chill on or near you. Whenever I'm working at my computer, she is either sitting in my shoulder, hand, or more recently petting my beard (weird I know). Supremely cool and adorable little critters!
Again: I appreciate that you're so informative and educational in your videos. It seems to me like there's a lot of folks out there who choose sensationalism over education when it pertains to reptiles, amphibians and arthropods.
Why would you be scared to approach them? I just go and grab them tho they can pinch you but it doesn't really hurt it's waaaaaay less painful then a crayfish or hermit crab pinch.
I love mantis, I had one who stayed on my window outside for at least a full week, I brought here some snacks and a little plate with water in it. The last time I saw her it was when I got back from work, she was a bit further from her usual spot and I noticed that she had lost a bit of waist size. I went to check her bottom, just to notice some dried foam. She had layed her eggs! And while I was I looking around trying to find the nest, she had left (the odd part is that she chose to run away just after I got home at the end of the day). I love how these little things can lock on to you and follow you with their eyes ^^. Really curious, cute and beautiful creatures.
It's really funny that I got this in my recommended a few hours after my friend told a story about bringing a mantis home to keep, her getting loose in the house, laying eggs, and him opening his closet like a week later and like a thousand itty bitty baby mantises came flooding out lol
When I was a kid, my brother caught a praying mantis and we kept her and she had babies. We moved them to a large fish tank when they hatched, used a LOT of fruit flies, and allowed them to cannibalize as they pleased. There must have been 100+ babies, and we couldn't keep them all. We followed the advice of misting the enclosure every day, but we always made sure Greeny (the surviror) had at least one bug to hunt in her enclosure every day. Sometimes she would go a few days without eating, so I think that she was not overweight. It was really fun.
First off, I'm surprised you knew how to take care of them (at least the fruit fly bit and misting the enclosure) but what I'm more surprised about is that you didn't freak out or your parents didn't freak out about keeping that many. I would have been hella scared.
@@incognito576 iirc, after praying mantises breed, the female decapitates the male and lays her eggs in his neck. ill admit, im not 100% confident on this info, but i hope this helps!
My dad and I have kept a mantis every year since I was about seven. They're super cool pets! There's a ton of them where we live and so we've always just caught a baby outside and raised it. We always let it go around this time of year (when fall starts getting cooler) so they can breed just to be completely sure that we aren't impacting the population. The first two we had were Chinese, the other ones were Carolina.
I had a lovely green one a few years back. He used to like eating honey from time to time. I would dip the tip of a chopstick in to honey and hold it out for him and he went crazy for it. I also kept him in a large enclosure with lettuce planted at the bottom, branches all over the place and loads of crickets running around. He lived a surprisingly long time and moulted well but if I get another one I will follow your guidance as I was probably just lucky with him and I wouldn't want one to be eaten mid moult.

One thing I find really impressive about mantids, is they eat EVERYTHING on the prey item. Like a dubia roach, jumping spiders usually eat the bottom and the top exoskeleton is left and even tarantulas leave remnants of the shell but mantis chew right through and eat everything.
once i watched a mantis eat a cicada while it was alive and i hated it but also couldnt look away so little seven year old me just watched the whole thing while the cicada screamed
The fact that just yesterday, Brave Wilderness just did a video on praying the praying mantis bodes very well for this video's performance, and it ought to give the whole Snake Discovery channel a solid boost! I love the look of the ghost mantis! It’s head shape is really neat and the swaying is spot on for a leaf in the wind ( or lack of wind in this case). Such neat tiny aliens!
My 4 year old found a mantis in our yard and we let him keep her. She laid her ootheca a couple weeks ago and we are so excited to see them hatch this spring! Doing our research, your videos are always so great I was really excited to see you had one about these guys!
Hey guys! Let me start off by saying I love your channel a lot. I really do! But I wanted to touch on some things that I found misleading in your video regarding mantis care. I've been in the mantis trade for quite a while now and one thing I've found about most mantis care videos is that they treat all mantis care as identical. That simply isn't the case. For instance, your ghost there actually prefers moderate to low humidity (as he's from a very dry climate) and the amount of misting you did in his little cup was way too much. Some mantis species even need as little as 10% or less humidity to be successful. It's very species dependent and there's no catch all among common hobby mantises. Additionally, a number of mantis species require additional heat (Desert mantises need spotlights of up to 110 degrees!) Also telling the difference between males and females can vary depending on the species as well. While the segment method is pretty universal, it can be incredibly difficult to determine the difference on some species. On Orchids, for instance, their collar around their neck is brown in males and green in females. Male ghosts have long, thin, crooked head crests while females are shorter and more blunted. Paper towel may not be enough for certain species (something like a violin or devil's flower mantis definitely needs a mesh). Also regarding feeding, it's generally advised not to feed crickets, as they commonly have lots of bacteria in their guts and mantises can be sensitive to these. But you can also feed wax worms (not too often, too fatty) and the moths that pupate into, as well as soldier flies or their larva, grasshoppers, butterflies. Another thing you didn't touch on that I think is very important with these guys is that you should never, unless you are 100% sure you have a native or naturalized species, release your mantis outside. It can be very dangerous for the ecosystem. Anyway, as always, I look forward to seeing more videos from you. Please include these little guys in the future!
The thing about the crickets isn't necessarily true, even though often repeated. www.mantidkingdom.com/are-crickets-bad-for-mantids/ You can breed your own crickets and keep harmful bacteria levels down.
@@rdizzy1 While this is absolutely true, the reason I say this is that most people get their crickets from places like petco or petsmart and those crickets can be detrimental to your mantis's health.
I am getting an orchid mantis in a few days! I really want to keep this mantis for a full lifetime so I am doing LOTS of research to make sure it will be as healthy as possible!
Hi, I know this may sound like a stupid thing to request, but I was wondering if you could do a video about choosing a healthy leopard gecko and taking care of it (similar to the one you did in choosing healthy snakes) I have been looking into getting into a leopard gecko for a while, but it would be great to get some more opinion. Thanks!❤️❤️
I normally don’t like looking at bugs, but for some reason I find these so CUTE! When it punched the other bug and it didn’t work and just dived in I was cheering it on. Sooooooo sweet !
The ghost mantis is my favorite, i love when bugs mimic their environment to hide from predator.... and prey! I'll always have a place in my heart for Carolina mantis as they were released in my area and have become feral. Love finding them in the Dahlias and Cosmos plants ^_^.
For some people, Mantises are fun to keep as pets for a while, but not to raise! So for those of you who find a mantis and want to have it as a pet, but don't have the proper tools to keep it from dying, I highly recommend keeping it for a day or two and then releasing it into the wild where it belongs! That's the only way to ensure that it'll take be able to care of itself better than you ever could!
Found a huge mantis while I was on a walk, in the middle of the road and baking in the sun. I took it home to give it some shade and water, and was able to ID it as a Chinese mantis which are invasive where I live, so I didn't want to put it back outside. So I made it a quick enclosure and gave it a dubia and it seems to be doing very well! Been years since I've kept mantises, and never this big, so it's been exciting. Seems to be a female, thinking I'll call her Erin :)
Always loved Mantids, they're so uniquely designed and have developed quite the instincts. I grew up in Charleston SC so I'm very familiar with them. Since then I've moved to Washington state and was surprised to find one at my work next to a warehouse. I'm growing a live plant tank right now and hope to add a mantis soon, thank you for the advice! :)
I was surprised by the exclosure size recommendations. I used to have hundreds of plants in my room and I simply let my girl hang out on them. She'd always stay on the plants in my room - would go from one side of my room to the other sometimes, but would always climb onto me when I misted my plants in the morning. I kept crickets in an old butterfly net-cage thing and would use my snake's feeding tongs to feed her one of those. She never had a name, but I'd always call her pet names: Hey, pretty girl. Look at you, sweetheart, eating so well. Oh, there's my little lady... good morning. She was a little darling. Mantises make great pets.
Is seems like everybody is getting into mantids now alot of animal youtubers are getting into it. I really love that because I have a collection of my own (including the spiny flower mantis that I picked up this weekend)
we always have mantids in our front yard in the summer, and my dad likes to feed them grasshoppers. we usually end up with a praying mantis waiting on the front porch for us. it's adorable.
This is so cool I've never heard of anybody else using the betta cup technique! I like popping off one if the detachable peices of the exo terra hanging plants for my crested geckos and putting that in there for them to climb on and hunt on too
Thanks so much. I recently found a large mantis (about 8 inches in length) She seemed so sociable and nice so I put her in a nice habitat that's perfect for it's size. I love these little guys!
always wanted one of these, don't know why but these are so COOOOOOL. today i visited at the petstore ( i don't support petstore's, i rather buy my animals directly from breeders) but i saw Brachypelma hamorii or Brachypelma smithi. who knows they always get's mixed up... so cool
So cool, thank you. I played an outdoor show this year and I had a 5 inch mantis (wild) that seemed to love me. Followed me around. Such a cool insect.
No idea why this showed up in the feed at 5 in the morning but I'm glad it did because I love mantises, I used to take care of a bunch in my front yard as a kid. Thank you for this video, I might consider getting a mantis myself!
ca t. They are extremely aware, which is probably what makes you uneasy. I had a huge mantis outside my door and as I was walking up I spoke to him and acknowledged his presence and he just kept watching me until I got in the door and went back to stalking his prey. The mantis is such a cool insect.

Great video I learned a lot about my mantis I have always been fascinated with the praying mantis. I was riding a public transportation buss here in a large City. I found one riding on the buss alone. I decided to keep the awesome flying male possibly rescuing him. I am TOTALLY amazed at how smart this guy is. I mean it's truely amazing for an insect, this guy literally seems to be as intelligent as a cat. Except the mantis seems to look at me (study me) more than a cat might. It tells me when it's hungry or thirsty just by giving me a look. So special and wow even though natural selection is a fact. These guys truely prove there is a higher power.
A few months ago I actually got a Spiney Flower Mantis and oml I am in love with her, she is very clingy and very loving and very easy to take care of.
This was awesome thank you! I’m growing some plants in my backyard and the Prey Mantis they have attracted have kept my plants bug free. They are super helpful and look amazing when eating.!
Another inexpensive alternative to the toilet paper at the top of the enclosure is a woman's knee-high. I use them for my jumping spider sling enclosures to keep the flightless fruit flies inside. They work like a charm and you can get a ton of them for a couple of dollars!
Could you do a video on how to properly pick up, and hold them safely? They are very delicate it seems like it might be hard to get them out of an enclosure.
Just put your finger close to them, make sure you won't get attacked and it will eventually climb on :) You shouldn't hold them too high above ground because they can jumpand hurt themselves yeah pretty easy to handle
Ah, I just saw this video last night and reviewed today. It was really helpful since in science class we were hatching them and they hatched today! I’m really excited because I get to keep some but nervous because they are a nymph. Thanks for sharing this video even if it was a couple years ago😌💖

She never had a name, but I'd always call her pet names:
Hey, pretty girl.
Look at you, sweetheart, eating so well.
Oh, there's my little lady... good morning.
She was a little darling. Mantises make great pets.
„Before we catch that fly, let us praise the Lord!“ - Praying Mantis
I have often thought of keeping a pet mantis
Is seems like everybody is getting into mantids now alot of animal youtubers are getting into it. I really love that because I have a collection of my own (including the spiny flower mantis that I picked up this weekend)
I just googled the spiny flower mantis, spectacular creature
Just googled it as well. Holy crap, I can't even believe such a creature exists! It's like a little work of art!
You think the mantis stock market is going up?
Mine died last year. It had a bad molt. I have a giant asian and an orchid now. I also used to have a ghost mantis.
@@TheSuperbadkneegrow yes for sure
we always have mantids in our front yard in the summer, and my dad likes to feed them grasshoppers. we usually end up with a praying mantis waiting on the front porch for us. it's adorable.
Ghost Mantis: Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle du du du du du du du wiggle wiggle yeah.
I am watching these one more time because I got my first mantis today and I wanna make sure I know as much as possible
This is so cool I've never heard of anybody else using the betta cup technique! I like popping off one if the detachable peices of the exo terra hanging plants for my crested geckos and putting that in there for them to climb on and hunt on too
Allen Jay me either! I loved the spring tail advice
Thanks so much.
I recently found a large mantis (about 8 inches in length)
She seemed so sociable and nice so I put her in a nice habitat that's perfect for it's size.
I love these little guys!
Eh, I'll just catch a Scyther and teach it fury cutter.
Sam uel
Lol
LOL
Imma get one and call it Scyther
Hell yeah Scyther is my favourite pokemon. If I get a mantis, I'm absolutely naming it after some of my scythers
we had a chinese mantis egg sac hatch in our house. we didn’t realize until it was too late, so this video is very very helpful right now. thank you
6:43 "ew it touched ma foot" "gross"
I love it XD
Definitely the ghost is my favorite...I love his dance!
always wanted one of these, don't know why but these are so COOOOOOL. today i visited at the petstore ( i don't support petstore's, i rather buy my animals directly from breeders) but i saw Brachypelma hamorii or Brachypelma smithi. who knows they always get's mixed up... so cool
Bass Is Lif you seem like you know a lot about mantises haha. Do you know which pet store you saw the mantis at?
So cool, thank you. I played an outdoor show this year and I had a 5 inch mantis (wild) that seemed to love me. Followed me around. Such a cool insect.
I made an amazing discovery! Look at a mantis swaying, put dance music over it. Your welcome.
The subtitles always crack me up but the Mantids behaviorisms made them even better this time
Praying mantis: IM A SHTICK WATCH MEH SWAY "gently sways" me:AWWWWWWW
Probably the best care guide I’ve seen so far
Haha so cute! I don't think I can choose between the two!
I'm Litterally watching this as I get my mantis enclosure ready. I'm so excited, thank you for your content, it's helping!

Man, your channel is so much fun and you are a really great presenter. You have a gift.
when she said ghost mantis i was expecting the case to be empty as a joke XD
No idea why this showed up in the feed at 5 in the morning but I'm glad it did because I love mantises, I used to take care of a bunch in my front yard as a kid. Thank you for this video, I might consider getting a mantis myself!
I'll have them mate when they become adults. RIP male mantis. XD
FEMALES WILL NOT ALL WAYS EAT THE MALE
@thebangingcracker and you have to pray with the male mantis.
I used to have a Carolina mantis, and I'll be soon getting a Chinese Mantis. Super excited! I also love the orchid mantises, they are so pretty!
They are amazing! I really love them X3 I also love your channel a lot and your videos :D
Having pray mantis as pets is awesome. I love my two. Got a giant Chinese mantis and a dead leaf.
I once had a huge praying mantis. We fed it crickets and it lived 6 months.
Me and my sister just got an new mantis, and thank you for this helpful video on how to take care of him/her!
I hate bugs but I love mantises for some reason lol
queencleopatra007 probably because they eat all other bugs XD
I like most bugs but mantises make me feel uneasy. I still love them though. They are so cool
ca t. They are extremely aware, which is probably what makes you uneasy. I had a huge mantis outside my door and as I was walking up I spoke to him and acknowledged his presence and he just kept watching me until I got in the door and went back to stalking his prey. The mantis is such a cool insect.
Love your video that go straight to the action while explaining! Very informative about keeping these Play Mantis! With so many Forests being burned to the ground , we have to Thank You all the Hobbyists out there for keeping these Play Mantis , Leaf Insects & Stick Insect species alive! Thank You So Much for your efforts & for sharing! Stay Safe & World Peace! 🌍♥️🌷🕊🕯
I wonder if I can keep an ant as a pet.
Oh wait, ant farms.
Watch Ants Canada its a UA-cam channel
@@jadepigeon7520 It was a joke.
@@lasigna0212 Ooh it was a joke but that sounds bad ass! Good job.
I respect that this is a joke but honestly Ants Canada is insane, he’s got like 5+ colonies
@@confuzedgraphite He's got way more than 5.
When the albino mantis dies, preserve it in resin
That is just it's nymph colouring, it isn't albino. It should get it's adult colours after it's final moult.
A few months ago I actually got a Spiney Flower Mantis and oml I am in love with her, she is very clingy and very loving and very easy to take care of.
Also she prefers to eat pre killed insects, the only insects she can eat alive is flies and moths.
When i saw the title i just screamed: WOWWW
I used to breed stick insects. Bugs are great. They're very low maintenance and fascinating.
I don't even like praying mantis but here I am...
I have an adult Carolina male and I love him he's super fast and loves to chill on the top of my hand.
Only 355k to go until 1 million well done love you videos
This was awesome thank you! I’m growing some plants in my backyard and the Prey Mantis they have attracted have kept my plants bug free. They are super helpful and look amazing when eating.!
I’ve befriended a preying mantis. She lives in my garden.
They are like little intelligent aliens! I got mine this week from MantisDojo and I already love her!
Did anyone see the pickle from Rick and Morty at 7:08 and before a couple seconds before that
she puts one in all her videos 😁
I am anxiously waiting for my 2 Ghost Mantis. They are due for delivery tomorrow. I'm so excited. Thank you for the video.
How do they react to snoot boops?
They prolly say "badaboom badaboom baby"
@@sunicarus8607 u inspired me to say Badaboom Badaboom baby in the comments
The little leaf one was sooooo adorable
All hail noodle queen
Another inexpensive alternative to the toilet paper at the top of the enclosure is a woman's knee-high. I use them for my jumping spider sling enclosures to keep the flightless fruit flies inside. They work like a charm and you can get a ton of them for a couple of dollars!
My dad caught a praying mantis and it lived about 3-4 years (no clue how lol)
thats so long!
could’ve been a stick bug then lol
The ghost is my favorite! Edna is so cute!
Just let them walk on you and don't grab them like a bird would
mantises will climb on u. just be the tree and mantis will hop on u. it is suggested not to grab as mantises dont like it.
let them crawl onto you, if they dont want to or are being annoying giving them a small boop on their butts will make them crawl onto you
I love praying mantis of any kind, they have fascinated me since I was a kid!
I saw a ghost Mantis at school when I was in 4th grade.
My Pillow where do you live? I wonder where they are native to
Ah, I just saw this video last night and reviewed today. It was really helpful since in science class we were hatching them and they hatched today! I’m really excited because I get to keep some but nervous because they are a nymph. Thanks for sharing this video even if it was a couple years ago😌💖
How'd you know I was considering a praying mantis!
Just hatched an egg case for the first time....kept 11 mantids (?) and let the rest go. Thanks for all the great advice. I really hope I can keep mine alive to adulthood. I love the Ghost mantis. But seriously, what's not to love on every mantis? They are all so awesome! =)
6:57 I TURNED MYSELF INTO A PICKLE MORTYYYYY!!!
Nice job finding Pickle Rick!
Snake Discovery Thank you! I’m curious whether it was Emily or Ed who decided to sneak him into videos - or was it a mutual decision? Love your channel btw. I’ve learned so much and I hope you reach a million subscribers very soon. You guys deserve it!!
omg! was scrolling thru the comments and after 10 comments I couldn't belive noone was talking about pickle rick! I saw it at 6:50 and went back to see if it had always been there
Watching the little dude eat at 6:25 is ADORABLE
