I believe the annoying shifter is for safety. Accidentally shifting into into drive or reverse when you intended the opposite could be dangerous. This is more important when parking. I agree with putting neutral in between drive and reverse, even if it adds an extra step.
Hey there! Volvo Employee for 4+ years. Although it could be considered for safety, it is primarily to reduce space needed for a traditional shifter and tends to be more reliable on account of it being primarily electronic - whereas the prior automatic shifter could face potential mechanical issues (we haven’t had really any at all but going to a more reliable electronic option never hurts). Volvo loves to perfect things, even things that aren’t broken in the first place just to “future-proof” their vehicles. Some people find it’s ‘different’ at first, but after a drive or two our clients pick up on it VERY quickly. Like the touch screen, it’s a lot easier than the first impression may give

I am considering a mild hybrid or PHEV Volvo , currently lease XC40, but we are in the South, we use the AC maybe 10 out of 12 months, and it seems that the AC compressor turns off , while fan continues with engine Off, so until switch to an Electric Compressor for AC in Gas engines I don't see how this would be attractive to people in warmer climates ,Arizona, Florida, Texas etc.
The XC40 Recharce (pure electric) is the only Volvo model currently available with an electric A/C Compressor. Otherwise for all Volvos equipped with Start/Stop, disabling it from the infotainment touch screen is the only way to keep the compressor constantly running.

The new infotainment is definitely not there yet but that's actually because it's designed by Google and will be updated over time. If you go with the 21 you have basically the pinnacle of what that infotainment will ever be, and you will need to go to the dealer in order to have your maps and guidance system updated.
