0:29 just a fun Switzerland fact: their flag is allowed to be rectangle if displayed amongst other flags that are rectangle. Switzerland being a true neutral yet again!
That ties in with what I suspect is the reason so many countries have a flag which, at least in an acceptable variant, is rectangular with a fairly ordinary aspect ratio: to allow multiple flags of equal size to be shown together. If a display has flags from multiple countries, all of which are g. 120cm by 90cm, then there can be no question about whether the flags are the same size. If, however, there were some flags that were 120cm by 90cm but some that were 100cm by 100cm, then some people might complain that the extra height of the square flag gave it too much visual prominence, but others might complain that the larger perimeter of the 120x90 flag made it more prominent. I was always under the impression that flags were rectangular because before photographs, flags were sometimes described in order to communicate what the flag looks like to someone who has never seen the flag but needed to make one for a situation. One example being a really weird but funky version of the flag of the United States of America created for John Paul Jones in 1779. Not sure if that's even true though
Is that the one with red with and blue stripes? As for everything else, flag design started as a sunset of heraldry which has had a system of how to describe a design for centuries now, because coat of arms can be extremely intricate and so a tradicion was established on how to describe them so as to be able to be designed by other heralds. However, flags, according to vexillologist, should be simple to the point a child should be able to draw it.
as a nepali, thats the best way for foreigners to remember Nepal. the flag and Mt everest. i think i read in grade 5, nepal didn't have a official flag to be represented by in UN before this flag.
Wouldn't be as relevant in the general knowledge of the population perhaps, however the flag of a country does not define nor influence that much in geopolitical relations between states.
I think the white helps the flag flow in the wind. Not sure if the original shape can be carried by the wind and reveal unfold the full flag for the public when put on a pole.
Ok so .. the reason we have triangle flag is because of it represents our mountain... Mt everest , Dhaulagiri , Kanchanga ,etc ..red color represent blood of our ancestors who fought with indo_british army ,sun and moon represent our country nepal will be there till there is sun and moon in the sky... 😔... This is the reason out flag is different and we are proud of it
We've had a rectangular flag for 800 years here in Denmark, I don't think it's an explicitly naval or colonial thing, just a European thing. Even before we had the "first national flag" square flags were the most common kind to be carried around by armies.
My brother went to Nepal for work and asked if I wanted him to bring me anything from there. Local crafts? Interesting artwork? Trinkets? NO! I wanted a flag! Weirdest flag is best flag.
I think Nepal wouldn't look out of place if more countries had different shaped flags. I think more countries should have different shaped flags. Embrace the chaos of unique cultural symbols. Reject Eurocentric standardization!

I love how Finland's flag is so good it takes both 6th and 10th place.
The explanation for rectangular flags coming from ships fits surprisingly well to the swiss naval flag being wider than tall
I love that a landlocked country has a naval flag.

"No colors are more often used in flags than red, white and blue"
* Proud Dutch noises *
@Japish Thukral, Netherlands were first
Should've stayed a bit orange IMO hehe.
@Japish Thukral Russia literally took the Dutch flag and flipped it 90 degrees to invent the Russian flag.
@@MegaBallPowerBall no, they really didn't, since Russia's flag has horizontal stripes and goes in the order white, blue, red 🇷🇺. That is not a 90 degree flipped version of the Dutch red, white, blue 🇳🇱. The flag that appears closest to being a rotated Dutch flag is the French flag, which is blue, white, red from left to right 🇨🇵.
Bonus Fact :- Nepal's flag has a blue border and a crimson red base with white moon and sun. The blue border represents the peace and harmony of nepali people
The red base represents the bravery
The white moon and sun signifies the hope that Nepal will endure as long as the sun and the moon are shining.

Red, white, and blue?
[American national anthem on electric guitar begins to play] 😎
Speaks a lot about how the US sees itself when the three most common flag colors (and the most common color combination) are portrayed as something uniquely American.
@@Tapakapa Yeah it's rather telling of the American worldview. There's a super patriotic song by Toby Keith written right after 9/11 called 'Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue' - great example of this in action.
Yah American flag is well known in world

Is that irrational number geometrically significant, or is it just an unfortunate consequence of the flag's construction? Is it transcendental or algebraic?
Sidenote: I like your rhombic reimagination of Nepal's flag for your little nation Sim guys
There's no significance in it. It's just a byproduct of the way it is constructed. For further information, I'm really not the person to talk to, since my math skills are basic at best.
Thanks, I thought the rhombic version works really well too ^_^

Thank you for including NEPAL🇳🇵🇳🇵😍😍
At the UN all flags are 2:3, so that's why it looks like that.
What's funny is that the UN flag will match the proportions of a member's flag in their territory or other location that it and a member's are officially displayed together.
Please tell me that the UN flag is a double triangle in Nepal.

Not even sure, but I doubt it.
I swear this video is 6 years old.
I have somehow seen it without ever having seen it.
You may be confusing it with CGP grey’s video on the confederate flag.

Had to look it up its on page 221. Kind of cool
Honestly, it's the price to pay. Flags are so common these days (haven't we all had at least one place in our school where a bunch of country flags hanged?) that they are assembly line products. You either join the standard or deal with the solution. You don't see Switzerland complaining about 🇨🇭, and that's because they understand that
I mean the fact that the flag at the UN is messed up shows they really aren't putting up a fuss lol
@@coreypowers2988 At the UN all the flags have to be the same size because countries get pissy about precedence, that's why taller than wide isn't an option there
I will appreciate this. At Least, someone notice about this and informing world about the nepal's flag.
Thank You Very Much.❤

“I’m not like other flags”
Nepal, a rectangular country, with non rectangular flag.
The UN purposefully displays every flag in the same aspect ratio
I guess we take this shape because of banners.
They were always somewhat squared.
We just elongated them for style.
When the animation is similar to CGP gray:
CGP gray at home.
I bursted into tears and started laughing when Nepal said:
Nepal not, no
Nepal noo,
never, nah,

That shape can easily teared down by the wind, so the durability is quite low
Discord had it ruined for so long that I once created an emoji for the Nepalese flag on my server without the white.
Love the Nepal flag 🇮🇳❤🇳🇵🕉️💞
as a nepali, thats the best way for foreigners to remember Nepal. the flag and Mt everest.
i think i read in grade 5, nepal didn't have a official flag to be represented by in UN before this flag.
just have a rectangular flag with the outside part threaded with fishing line lol easy
Wow, fishing lines are that sharp and hard to snap?
I have a worser option when im trying to buy a nepalese flag i came across a,

This video is not CGP gray
As someone from Nepal.
It always mildly infuriates me when it's disproportionate like 'cant you just don't do that damn it.'
To be honest, if it wasn't for the flag... Nepal wouldn't be that relevant in the international scene.
nah! there's mt. eveerest and buddha too
Gurkhas "Nepali spldiers" prettty well known in United kingdom, India , singapore , etc
But still i kinda agree with your comment
Wouldn't be as relevant in the general knowledge of the population perhaps, however the flag of a country does not define nor influence that much in geopolitical relations between states.
Nepalese soldiers (serving in Gurkha regiments) have boots on the ground in more countries than most.
Kumari is pretty famous but western news have shown kumari practice biasedly
thank you so much im nepali and i literally love the uniqueness of our flag + get so happy seeing people removing the white background 😭
AYO WHO WATCHING FROM NEPAL RN!! 🔥
I think the white helps the flag flow in the wind. Not sure if the original shape can be carried by the wind and reveal unfold the full flag for the public when put on a pole.
This isn't CGP Grey
We've Been Tricked, We've Been Backstabbed and We've Been Quite Possibly, Bamboozled.
Ok so .. the reason we have triangle flag is because of it represents our mountain...
Maybe in a QNA video you can show the differences between your English vids and your German ones?
My brother went to Nepal for work and asked if I wanted him to bring me anything from there. Local crafts? Interesting artwork? Trinkets? NO! I wanted a flag! Weirdest flag is best flag.

Its so unique that I never even noticed that it had one of the most common color combinations (red, white and blue) until this very moment.

Flag of Nepal is used by ancient Hindu warriors even before 5000 years ago. We use the same flag today.
This seems unlikely? Certainly not in its current design.
@@drdca8263 He's just being chauvinistic. The flag of Nepal was in fact designed differently as late as 1962.
