Ask a London Cabbie: Electric vehicle charging and costs. CHADEMO vs CCS/Type 2

- Electric vehicles are a relatively new and to some a confusing technology. There are different types of connectors and varying rates of charge time.
In this video I explain the connectors on my cab and how to calculate how long your vehicle will take to charge.
Type 2 home charger cable I use (mains powered no installation required): amzn.to/2DvatAN

Thanks! Just the answers I was looking for. Currently arranging for a charge port to be installed on my drive for a TX5.
11h to charge from empty, but how often is it actually empty at the end of the day? I'd imagine that overnight charging usually has it full in the morning.
Hi Tom. Nice we are getting so many videos at this lock down time😊
I wanted to ask you how many miles average do you make on your normal working day?
Between 60-85 miles. Depends on how long my shift and if I get a job out to Heathrow or not.
So you charge it via a 3 pin plug at home? Are you aware of an OLEV grant that will allow you to get a 7kw charger at your house which will charge much quicker than the 3 pin
Yep, but as I rent (and no longer live at the property in this video) I don’t fancy paying for the landlord to get one installed, When a 3 pin was always quick enough for me
The LEVC is only capable of a maximum charging speed of 45kwh on rapid chargers on both CCS & CHADEMO. Driver’s always get confused by thinking that these new super 150kwh Chargers will do the job faster but unfortunately as you mentioned this is not physically possible.
The LEVC is only capable at max speed of charging at 45kwh. (Although it states 50kwh power input it cannot achieve this).
How is it possible to fit 150kWh of electricity in a 31kWh battery? Guess you mean 45kW and not kWh. kW is power (horsepower) and kWh is an amount of energy (liters of petrol in your tank).
@@sjokomelk yes i was referring to the charging speed in Kw. LEVC only capable of max speed of 45
Roughly how many hours does it take to charge from 0% - 99% with a 3 pin charging lead please Tom ?
I'm getting a charging port installed on my drive on the 10th Feb but was wondering if I should purchase a 3 pin lead in the mean time for my TXE
@@mikeybb6577 using a 3pin plug charge time would take approximately 10hrs.
Good job
What 3 pin plug charger do you use? Also do you have an outside 3pin socket or garage? I don’t really wanna have it hanging out a window over night. Cheers

No outside socket, just posted it through the letter box 👍🏻
I’ve just received the product on the link, and it does not fit! Maybe it’s wrong or Amazon have sent me the wrong thing. I’ll update later.
Any advice please?
Thanks
What is the range with a full battery charge? and does your cab having the 3 cylinder engine under the bonnet to charge the battery while on the move. I was behind one of these cabs and saw the exhaust fumes coming out of the rear on a cold night, people are mislead, thinking these new cabs are 100% zero emission free.
T. D. 60 miles or around 6/7 hours in town if there’s no heating/AC on.
45 miles of AC comes on.
Hello Tom how did you go about getting the silver grills on the front of the taxi look really good were they easy to fit?
Just bought some chrome trim on eBay, 2 packs 2 metres, and 3mm thick I believe. Very easy to fit, just self adhesive.
@@TomtheTaxiDriver Hi Tom, loving your honest vids 👍 dont suppose you have the link for the chrome trim my friend.
Walk ain’t 3 phase on typical house
kWh your confusion is not using kW and kWh correctly
And how much money for a new battery!?
For most EVs built post-2012/2013, you will never need to replaced the battery. The management system optimise the life of the battery, and in essence has made it live longer than the car. Even early cars with poor management systems are still going, albeit with significantly shorter ranges.
@@benfarmer-webb1016 there’s a Tesla that has driven 1 million miles with only CJ angling the battery once. Most ice cars can’t get past 200k miles at all. Batteries are also much cheaper and when you come back to replace the battery, the battery technology will have improved and your car will literally be upgraded
Oh fuck it costs to charge an electric vehicle? Yeah I thought there had to be a catch somewhere... :(
Yep, and it's getting more and more expensive. Anything above £0.25 kW then it is probably cheaper to run it on the petrol generator.
