I was thinking that the strong chorale singing tradition of the Philippines (church choirs, Philippine Madrigals, UP Concert Chorus, LSGH Kundirana and Gary V) was one of the sources of complex and sophisticated harmonies in P-Pop, and that vocal coaches were a channel for that influence. Thanks for providing this little fact to support my pet theory.
