Should You Feed Your Snake in its Cage?

  • Spoiler: Yes, you should. Avoid feeding in a different enclosure. People feed their snakes in different enclosures for two reasons. The main concern is that a snake will go into "feeding mode" when you open and reach into their usual enclosure if they are fed in that same space. Then, once the enclosure's open, they may bite you after mistaking you for prey. For this reason, people suggest that you move your snake to another enclosure before feedings so they don't associate their usual home with food everytime the enclosure's opened.
    However, there are many issues with this. Firstly, there has yet to be any real evidence that snakes become more aggressive for food when fed in their usual enclosure. Secondly, if a snake is going to become more aggressive in the enclosure they are fed in, they would bite you when you're going in to move it back to their normal enclosure.
    The other issue is you should not handle snakes after feeding because you risk them vomiting up the food since they lose some of their defense when a large meal is inside them. Vomiting or regurgitating a meal is not only a waste of a mouse or rat, but is also very dangerous and uncomfortable to the snake. If you decide to keep the snake in the second enclosure for a few days until it had time to digest, they will have to stay in an inaccurate setup for a few days which can put more stress on them, causing more issues. You could choose to create a whole second proper enclosure just for feeding, but that would be expensive to purchase all of the supplies, complicated to keep both enclosures heated and properly humidified, and on top of that, it won't even matter because the snake would develop that "food aggression" in the second enclosure (which doesn't exist to begin with).
    The second concern is the snake can potentially ingest some of their substrate if their mouse or rat comes in contact with it.
    Although this can be a concern with some substrates, you're going to be just fine with a snake ingesting the occasional wood chip or other digestible substrates. Check the videos below for good and bad choices in substrates.

    About time someone reliable made a video on this. The way I see it, even if this associative property exists, if you handle your snake 3 times a week, and feed it once a week, its going to associate your with handling, not feeding.

    It's a complete myth that when you feed in enclosure that they will associate you with a mouse or food. If anything they will associate you taking the snake out for feeding time

    I’m so glad I found you! I just got my very first corn snake today, and she’s ready to feed once she gets settled in. We’ve decided against removing from her enclosure to feed after watching this. She was snippy when we got her, but she calmed almost immediately once we held her. She’s safe and sound in some coco with some hides, water, and heat mat! Luckily we have no shortage of coco so she’ll always have a clean place to live!

    I have a feeding tub for my snakes, it helps to avoid substrate in the mouth. I don't pick them up after they eat. I pick up the tub and hang it over the tank and let them crawl out themselves for their safety.

    I absolutely love you're channel. Granted I found it a month ago, but I've been visiting your videos more often so I can be knowledgeable when i move out and stay on my own. I'm currently 20, (about to turn 21 this year) and I take care of my grandmother who is very allergic to animals and sees lizards and snakes as a bad Omen and I respect her wishes. We have 2 outside dog with the exception of an indoor/outdoor cat lol. I love doing research on all types of animals, and you, along with a few other pet channels, is helping me on my way

    100% agree with you. I used to feed my snakes in separate tubs. But as soon as I moved them to Feeding in their own habitats. Their feeding responses went better! Great video! I love how you went into deeper topics on the "separate tub". It's nice seeing this topic being addressed.

    • @AlexsAgamids
      @AlexsAgamids 7 років тому

      Exactly. And I'm a sense. It would seem as if feeding them in their habitat is a more natural approach with the prey coming to them. After all most common pet snakes we have today are in fact ambush hunters.

    Just found your channel and you really know your stuff, I've got a Corn, rainbow and now just bought a Royal. With the corn I move it out into a feeding tub and have had no problem with her. How ever my rainbow hated this and I feed him in his home. Not moving him at all. I wanted to know the best possible way to feed a royal and learnt that they can get very stressed when you move them into another area (such as a feeding tub) After watching this video I have now concluded that I won't be moving my royal and yes I've been bitten but only if I had not washed my hands after handling the mouse/rat properly. Keep up the good work bud. You have a new sub!

    Man I think I may have made a mistake by recently joining facebook groups online like Ball Python Enthusiasts - all they seem to do is judge how everyone is doing it wrong. You shouldn't use tanks unless you put black poster board around the whole thing and aluminum tape over the screen to keep the humidity in, the habba huts are horrible because they're prone to mold, a bp's enclosure has to be filled with clutter, etc. etc....I like you more Alex!

    like your videos man, keep it up. your a smart kid. Been researching pythons, and almost every time your videos have the best answers. I have problems with feeding cause my python gets emotional when I put her in another tub. found out just feeding them in there enclosure is just as safe. that's why you don't feed with hands. especially if you feed with frozen, your not teaching them to hunt in there home. the moment I used tongs, dangled the mouse in her home she ate. I put her in a separate tub, she did not eat. I think each snake is different, that's why it can be hard to figure it out. Best thing to do is watch there behavior. Thanks for your videos, and time. I know my snake appreciates it. She is happy as can be, I even think she flirts with me.

    I agree, I specifically bought a substrate which 1 Is good for burrowing 2 Cleaning 3 Good smell 4 Anti-Impaction. If you're so afraid of getting bit, wouldn't feeding your snake in a separate enclosure would increase the possibility of getting bit due to the fact you have to move it around during feeding time ;)

    I've always fed mine in a separate enclosure. I waited until he has to rodent all the way down, then I move him back to his regular enclosure. Never had a problem, he never regurgitated or even seemed anywhere close to it. It worked out great and that's the way I'll always do it in the future. If anything, I like the idea of putting the feeding tub inside the main enclosure and letting the snake crawl out on its own.

    My lil milk snake's had the same separate tub feeding routine for 10 years now, from when I got her(she is 16 or 17, I think her previous owner did the same), so now I'm not sure if changing stuff would do more harm than continuing.
    She's only ever refused a feed once with me(after getting stuck under a heat mat and having a terrible shed, like 8 years ago) and hasn't regurgitated a thing since I've had her either. Transferring is quick and easy because she's chill, used to it, and not a large snake. She eats f/t like a champ, strikes and "kills" them good with no apparent stress or hesitation. When she's done feeding I take the lid off the tub, hold it up to her viv, and she happily slithers back in without any further physical bothering from me.
    All that said, I don't think I'd have even attempted a separate feeding tub with a larger species, and I'd definitely take this advice into consideration for future small snakes. Knowing me I've been wasting my time and Snek's time for the last decade xD

    I managed to train my snake somehow. If I open the cage completely it knows that I'm going to pet, handle, or clean up after it. If I open it just a crack how I normally do to slide food in combined with the smell of food, then it usually starts to realize that it's feeding time.

    My first ball python and my first time feeding her in 2 days. Today she seemed more active outside her habitat. Is this because she is getting hungry and searching for food? Or she just getting more comfortable? Also is it ok to handle her the day before her feeding or is this a antsy time for her and I should leave her alone.

  • @seacalphys213

    I would say my python is an exception... he is very chill until it comes to food. he gets way too excited. I have always put him in a separate tub for feeding. the one time I had put him in the tub when I took him out of his tank and he felt gross cuz he messed in his hide and didn't come out. so I put him in the tub for a moment while I washed his hide and ran him a bath. when I went to go get him, he looked quickly at my hand like he would his mice.
    so feeding tubs are good for my python as he gets far too excited with food and he is super chill after eating so I can easily pick him up and put him back in his tank safely to digest.

    I use separate tanks for feeding for the theory of distinguishing hand from food - but also because it's purposely dirtier. My guys especially the BP sometimes isn't a good eater, and putting him in a small 10 gallon for feeding that smells like mice and blood gets him in go mode!

    I feed a lot of corn snakes out of their cage and i have been doing this for years, and a few minutes after they get their food down well enough I just set them gently back into their cage, only times ive had issues with regurgitating is when the snakes have been ill or were in blue (meaning getting ready to shed), I have been doing it with ball pythons as well and from what I can tell there is no issue with it, A few even have sometimes accidentally fallen upside down but they never regurgitated from being moved but that possibly be that I don't move them around a lot when I put them back.

      lol thanks, no sarcasm either. Levi, my BP has never not eaten her food b4 so i have never had to remove the mouse. It was one of those things that i knew what to do i just wasnt sure if by entering the my hand into her enclosure if i would stress her out more? If she would attack me because she felt out numbered in a sense? I did over think it and finally just kept talking to Levi while reaching in for the mouse. Was glad to see she stayed put, let me take the mouse and now we're all good lol. Love your channel, very clear and helpful. Any tips or advice on how to know if Levi IS stressed? Also how would i know if she is growing/eating properly? Like a age to size/weight scale of some kind.

    try doing TAPS you do a hard tap on the out side of the enclosure to let your snake know its feeding time

      Ian Redfield He keeps his in a 20 Gallon because they're relatively inactive animals. 20 Gal would be the smallest appropriate terrarium for an adult Ball. Hope this helps 🙂

    Food aggression does very much exist! I have had plenty of colubrids that I have fed in the tank who would allways try to eat me when opening the doors. And I do mean eat me! Not hissing or striking, but full on chasing me with mouth opened. After moving them out of the tank with a hook they would be super chill. Allmost never had this issue with snakes that are used to feeding tubs.
    Feeding tubs is also a must in my book if you have more then one snake per tank. And them being stressed out about getting handled or biting you when picking them up? We are talking about a full snake that is no longer hungry. It usually will be chill. And you handle it for like 3-5 seconds... they don't care.

    I genuinely feel like this doesn't matter. I've always done it separately with my snakes. I did it for both of the 2 reasons. I dont know if they have that associative ability or not, but if they do then great. If they associate this box with feeding, maybe they'll be less aggressive. I dont know. But I feel like this probably is a myth I bought into when I got my first snake at 14. But hasn't done any harm so far. If anything they just associate tongs with feeding, and hand with handling.
    Also it means I know it isn't eating any substrate, I can watch them eat and make sure they digest it properly. I pick them up as they start moving around, so they've swallowed their food and put them back in their enclosure. I hold them for a matter of seconds. I have never had a snake strike or regurgitate doing this. But yes I do agree, if the rodent is dry, its quite unlikely, and the snake will either pass it or avoid it. But its one of those things, why take the slight risk if I dont need to.
    Tbh I dont think it matters, and its just keepers preference. As long as the snake gets the meal they probably couldn't care less if its in some box or an enclosure. I plan on getting a boa, and I'll probably feed her in the enclosure, but keep doing what I've been doing with my other snakes.

    I usually feed in a separate cage. I've been doing this for yeeeears. But i'm going to switch to feeding in their enclosure cause one of them is pretty big now haha. Screw moving him. He's too eager as well so it's harder to move him than my smaller, less food eager snake. They've never regurgitated on me. Don't pick them up by the belly when you move them and ive been moving them for 8 years

    • @parismarshall9428
      @parismarshall9428 7 років тому +2

      Kerbonaut it could be anything but if you notice any bubbles around the mouth or nose area, get to a vet because it could be RI, but it also happens when handling because they tend to make little sounds when stressed, it could also be caused from stuck shed around the nose area. If it is really noticeable I would say go to a vet just to be safe.

    • @GoHerping
      @GoHerping  7 років тому +2

      Yeah, it could potentially be a respiratory infection. What substrate do you use? Sometimes some substrates will become really dusty and irritate the snake's lungs

      @natejd3515 7 років тому

      GoHerping I am currently using forest floor bedding but I will be changing to aspen bedding in a few days. Also I noticed shedding on his nostrils so that's probably the problem.

      Kerbonaut I would say help benny remove the stuck shed, and if benny is still making whistling sounds I would say go to a vet, just to make sure, I used forest floor before and I've never had a problem with it, so I'm not sure if it's the bedding, the shed or the humidity.

    I've never needed to move my Ball Python to a separate enclosure to feed her. I don't see any need to do it. I actually just use a plate to put the rat on for my snake to eat the rat to avoid her ingesting any substrate. And as for people worried about the snake associating your hand as food when you go in their home enclosure to handle them, you only feed your pet snake once a week and if you handle your snake most days of the week your snake is not going to associate your hand as food every time you reach into their enclosure to handle them!

    i personally feel like if you feed inside your cage he’s going to associate My hand with food And if you handle your snake 3 times are week and once for feeding day he will not think it’s feeding every time i take him out because it’s only one in 4 times that he will be fed in that week. also if you GENTLY put him back in his cage once he ate and don’t handle for 48hrs you will not have a problem and you won’t ever be worried about impactiob

    I know this video is old, but I 100% disagree with the last point. I've worked with many snakes and multiple, especially children's pythons and the aspidites species get foody around things that are certainly not food (not defensive behaviour either). Despite handling it several times a week, every time the enclosure of my children's python opens it would get really excited and investigate the door. During this, he has struck at both my hand and my hook without prior investigation. When I started taking him out to feed, this stopped happening within weeks of starting it.

    Couldn't you just feed the snake, take the snake out before he ingest the rodent and then put it in a feeding tub until it's done ingesting, afterwards hold the tub near the tank therefore giving the snake the urge to go in the tank

      Once you give it a few days to adjust to the enclosure, handling it daily is best. Just make sure you give it about a day or two after feeding before handling again.

    By the way, when you search for feeding regarding to snakes this question pops up: "Should you feed a snake in its cage?" and your site pops up with the text "Spoiler: No. People feed their snakes in different enclosures for two reasons. The main concern is that a snake will go into "feeding mode" when you open and reach into their usual enclosure if they are fed in that same space. Then, once the enclosure's open, they may bite you after mistaking you for prey."
    So your site and this video is referenced totally out of contest. If you could change the text into "Spoiler: No do not feed outside the cage. People feed their snakes ect" it would be very helpful.
