Mind reader! On your other vlog I mentioned photobooks and its been on my mind constantly since, BUT, like you mentioned I get hung up on layouts and designs and then just stall. Your ideas about that are great - plain cover, no complex layouts etc etc. Perfect. Thanks. Projects + books = focus! 2025's photography just took shape, and given I'm also early retired with a van for travel, this shouldn't be too difficult.... Bought a calendar as well - cheers.
glad to see you are enjoying film i never gave it up when everybody changed to digital i remember when i was teaching photograghy this gentleman said to me digital is the way to go my reply was film will come back it slows you down makes you think enjoy chris
I absolutely love it mate. I wish I’d learned photography younger when film was the dominant format because I think I’d have loved photography for the process rather than the result from the beginning if that was the case.
How funny, I was talking to the Mrs last night about wanting to make a photo book, and this pops up this morning! Never has a video like this been presented to me - they are listening to our phones 😆 Nice video by the way 🙂
sometimes color looks better than black and white, and other times black and white looks better, but then there is also style and taste and sticking to or breaking rules
Tried this in '23 and gave up after 6 months. My approach was to come up with a concept and photograph the whole month and then sequence it and print it. But it took a lot of effort. To come up with ideas and execute them was not easy. The pressure of getting it done made it very insightful. I had to work very fast and use every moment. I'm still proud of what I made in that period. I guess your approach is much more streamlined. Maybe I'll have a new attempt at this with you approach. I would love to hear more about the designing and printing part. And how to do it economically... Blurb was getting expensive after a while and the results were sometimes disappointing.
Good idea but you mentioned only pay 30 pounds for a book to be made. Is this just a one off or a run of 50 or so? The cheapest I've found over here in Canada is 50 bucks and that's from Walmart. The books look shit! The decent ones come from the states. They start at around 100 for 30 pages. Then when we import them we have tax added. Its a great idea but I don't find it a cheap idea. I printed a book on my printer. That cost me 20 bucks all in. That's another way to do a book but it's not as professional looking.
That’s just for a 1 off book. I never print more than 1 of these books at a time. That’s insanely expensive! I’d definitely not be printing at that cost
I had my family history printed (text only) a few years ago. It was 560 pages and the minimum order was ten books. 400 dollars works out to 40 dollars a book. It took me 12 years of research, so I consider this a cheap cost for 10 books that tell my family history going back to the 1500's. I tried the mini photo book thing and for a 10 page Zine was 38 dollars. Not doing that again.
I have created 24 photo books over the past 10 years. It gives me a purpose for making images and so a better photographer. I started by making the books a legacy project as I give them to my kids as Christmas presents every year becaus after I pass nobody is going to go through my hard drives to look at pictures. At a least now they have the books to remember me by.
i think the key regardless of which way its done is to print. A file full of printed images or a book full of the same images both do the same thing which is great and what really matters.

calendar just arrived - really good quality and some great images in there that remind me of lots of our trips as well. Thanks
Great information and inspiration. My goal for 2025 is to create either a zine or a photo book. This really helped. All the best for 2025

What book sites did you use? and and what did you do to prep the photos to be printed in thebooks.

@paulgryniewicz5650 its not a bad idea. Its just for some its not as cheap as individual printing. I've always done that. That will be my legacy.
