I really enjoyed hearing what the Mennonite culture believes regarding baptism. I grew up Southern Baptist and was saved at nine, but my dad wanted me to wait a couple years (till I was twelve) to be baptized. This was because of personal convictions we had as a family and then when my family switched over to Reformed Baptist and we found our current church, my family and I together decided I was ready to be baptized. And now I am so thankful to have waited those couple years because I was able to be baptized in the midst of my dear church family and not in a mega church where I didn't know anyone.

I grew up attending a Mennonite church and school. I’m so grateful for my experiences but as I got older I had to re-evaluate what I truly believed and get serious about my personal relationship with Jesus. I no longer attend church due to many, many heartbreaking events in various churches that we tried to attend over the years. But my heart will always be at Bart Mennonite Church where I was loved and accepted and very well cared for. I will never find a church like that or people like that again and it grieves me. But GOD! I know I am loved and accepted by Him. He is all I need.

I have on worship music all day long as I go about my day. It never ceases to amaze me how God uses these songs to speak to my heart. I may be dusting and something touches me and my hands reach out to worship him.

I was raised in a little Christian church literally by a hog lot in rural Indiana. I went to Catholic nursing school, big shocker to me. As a nurse, I cared for all races, and religious beliefs. I've read a poem that fits me. "You have Aids, you're an addict, you've committed crimes, or youve had an abortion. It doesn't matter, I'll take care of you! When l did homecare, I planned visits around prayer times. Judgment wasn't in any care plan! I used to pray before each visit. Some were hard on my heart, especially hospice patients. I learned a stronger Christian walk by my career.

I just love listening to you ladies! My mother in law was Mennonite but now joined our southern Baptist church and she asked the pastor if it was going to be an issue that she kept her head covering …. He was like absolutely not! We are here for God and that’s all that matters! I’ve known her since I was 17 ( now almost 45) and she has never shamed me or questioned me about any of my clothes or even swimwear. she says that is between you and God and your convictions not mine. She reminds me of a 77 ur old version of you ladies!❤❤

Megan, in regard to the "household baptisms" in the NT, they should be taken in context with the overall teaching of baptism in the NT, which is always "believe and be baptized." So, in those few instances in which Luke tells us of a household being baptized, we must understand it to mean that all those who believed the Gospel were baptized. The implication is that God was gracious to extend salvation to not only the believing men, but women, too; not only the family, but the believing household servants as well.

Yes! Beautifully explained. Baptism wasn't a new belief before Jesus came along, Jews baptized themselves to symbolize submission to a certain rabbi's authority. So that's why people would need to be re baptized to belief in Jesus and really changes the perspective of an entire household "switching" their trust to Jesus rather than any human leadership.

A lot of Amish don’t shun either, especially in the New Order churches. I came from a New Order Amish setting and joined a Non-denominational church,I also still have Amish family + Parents who we daily interact with and they support us etc etc. our church has a lot of Ex-Amish who come from churches who don’t shun but then there’s a lot that do as well, just varies I think mostly on the church setting/beliefs. Most New Order churches would believe that shunning is to be used when there’s sin and someone is unrepentant of their sin and chooses to continue living in it,like I feel like the Bible teaches, and also that there’s more than one way to be a Christian as far as culture goes etc, versus some churches,Old order Amish etc may feel like leaving the Amish is leaving “the faith” and while some might not openly say so,view driving cars,Mennonite dress etc is worldly and “sinful” so they shun for leaving…

This was really enlightening! I learned a lot, and was especially interested in Jayna's answer to the question of joining the Mennonites if you didn't grow up in the culture. Like Megan said about the Italians, you can go live among another culture, but you will always be a little outside it. I'm English Canadian and I live in France with my French husband. We lived in Canada for the first 15 years of marriage, and have been in France for over 9 years now. I definitely see the differences in the cultures, although my husband noticed it less in Canada because in fact his mum is Canadian. It has made for interesting experiences though! I really appreciate you both showing us your Mennonite faith and culture!

Good discussion ladies! There are many more areas of commonality between Mennonites and other denominations that are Bible-believing. We have liberty in Christ to follow Biblical convictions, and the culture doesn’t need to be the deciding factor in salvation. I love watching you two as you work through your culture to model a Christ-like walk in the world. Keep it up & God bless you and your families!

As an ex-Mennonite I have a problem with the way their culture mixes with religious belief. My cousin told a little girl once that women wearing pants are going to hell. And my family who was still quite conservative was always the black sheep of the family, feeling lots of persecution from the more conservative ones. Missionaries often change the culture of the host country to soon be looking and dressing like cape dress wearing Mennonites when that's so far from their culture. I think that's wrong.
But I still value my upbringing even tho some Mennonites think they're the ultimate way of being Christian.

Another great episode but I’m a little confused as to why people wait to be baptized or their church puts it off because in the Bible there are many examples of them being baptized immediately. Why was it an urgent thing to do ….even in the middle of the night? The Bible tells of believers being baptized for the forgiveness of their sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16; Col 2:12-13). They were baptized for salvation (Mark 16:16; 1 Pet 3:21). Anyways just wanted to share a different interpretation 💕

One thing I've embraced recently from the scriptures, is how a love for God will create/grow a love for His people. As I've grown in knowing and loving God I've come to love my (very flawed) congregation. Before I was just ambivalent towards most people in my church. Now I feel much more goodwill and kinship, not only with my local fellowship but with all true professing Christians near and far.
Idk what you've been through but I pray someday you'll heal from the pain that was inflicted on you, and you'll find your way to healthy Christian relationships that build you up in the love of Christ! Once you are stronger I pray He will grant you peace and love, even for the people who hurt you, whether they truly believe in Jesus or not. 🙏🏽 God bless you!

@peachfountain Thank you for being very kind. I've been a Christian for years, But I never grew up in the church because my parents were not Christian. But my grandmother was, and so I never went to church until I went to college. And I just was so exhausted from going to church all the time. And feeling like I had to put up a pretense. And it was just so tiring for me. Like I really wanted to learn more about god and I wanted to be a christian but it's at this point where i'm just too afraid to go to hell, and that's why i'm still in it. I know that's not a good reason. But I'm just trying to find the love because I haven't felt it in a long time.

For Catholics, when “praying to” a saint, it just means praying for that saint’s intercession on your behalf. So like if you’d ask your mom, “mom, will you pray to God for me that we are safe on our trip?” That’s what Catholics do when “praying to” saints. We are asking for them to intercede for us. So like “St. Anthony, help me find my lost dog” means “St. Anthony, please help me by praying to God on my behalf to help me find my lost dog”. It’s not like Catholics pray TO a saint like they pray to God, it’s like asking a family member or friend to help pray for you. Thanks for your episodes, I love watching!

@@allisonw1547 Prayer is an act of worship. We pray TO God on behalf of someone else, if we are in right standing with God through the blood of Christ and the Bible tells us Jesus intercedes for us.
We don't pray TO another human, to intercede for us.
      That is idolatory.
      No human has that power.
You are worshipping the creation, not the creator.

I agree dancing can be highly sexualized, but you can definitely learn to dance in a fun, modest, and respectful way. I love seeing all our teens learn grace and courtesy on the dance floor-so very different from the mainstream! I can understand not wanting to quibble over specifics though; to each their own!
Re: baptism-as a Catholic, we do baptize our infants, speaking for them until they are old enough to speak for themselves. As teenagers, they can be confirmed in the faith and choose it for themselves.

As a Mennonite (Mosaic Conference), my head covering is my extremely long hair, since it is my crown of glory and this is based off of 1 Corinthians 11:15. No one wears a head covering in my church, though in the past, I was the only one who had done so.
Ah, my church does baptisms separate from membership, but when being baptized, they have a choice to also take membership classes (as the service usually does both that day). When we baptize a 12 year old, they most likely will not be taking membership classes yet.
It is funny that my mom is mainly German and Dutch and her mother's family did come from PA, but they were all raised Baptist. I have been trying to research to see if I have a Mennonite in my line. My husband's line (his dad is half German) DOES have a Mennonite line in it, yet his parents are Christian Reformed (which is so odd since they were Mennonite first). No one in our families speaks either, but I did attend a Dutch Reformed school through 9th grade (and was mocked highly for being the only unbaptized person - since they were taught to baptize babies).

I am planning to get my ears pierced so I was interested in Jaynas point of view. I personally don’t see it as of this world but my reason for getting earrings is that my husband wants me to. The women in the church we attend don’t have pierced ears but I have studied the Bible on this topic and haven’t found anything saying it is wrong. I grew up in a very conservative Mennonite church and I am deeply saddened by the legalism in our culture, which seems to affect beliefs more than the Bible in some circles and is almost a deterrent for me at this point.

To me, the issue of pierced ears comes down to culture. My maternal grandmother was Spanish and it was tradition to pierce baby girls’ ears. She did it with my mom, my mom did it with me, I did it with my daughters. I don’t see the issue, but I also wear a wedding ring, so coming from a different perspective.

I love this discussion; I am an apostolic and I love your content because I feel from a religious background is very close to Mennonites. We do believe the Acts 2:38 way and it being the only way to make it into heaven. Firstly, I live the way I do because I have seen and felt the things the bible says to be true for myself which we all should do - As a 32 year old women I'm not choosing to wear skirts ect because I have to it's because I want to and follow the scriptures about modesty and do what I feel matches up and I am and have continually been blessed for it. However receiving the Holy ghost is of most importance, most people get it when they come out of the water - I did, but so many have gotten it years later after being baptized, the major point in this is the person never stopped trying to receive it and they eventually did receive it because Gods word can not lie. Baptism when it comes to children some may get the holy ghost at a young age and will get baptized if the parents agree to it, but really we mostly do it when the child can fully understand what is happening. Heaven is going to be filled with people we probably wouldn't ever think would be there, it's pointless to get hung-up on what others do or don't do. I just pray we all make it!

While I think the Bible condones dancing, it's true that it is dicey territory when it comes to how you dance, so the rules can make sense. However, if you grow up in a culture that promotes godly styles of dancing, you find a good bit of decent types of dancing. From liturgical dancing in church to Pride and Prejudice dancing, you've got some good options.

Loved this video. As a Catholic, there is always a misconception that we "pray to the saints"...we do not "pray to the saints" we "ask the saints to intercede for us and pray for us". We believe only God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit will answer our prayers. Just like as humans we ask others to pray for us. Or as children we may go to our mom and ask her to go to our dad to ask on our behalf. Again with Mother Mary, we don't pray to her to answer our prayers, we ask her to intercede for us and ask her take our prayers to her son on our behalf and ask her to pray for us. Another myth is that we don't follow the bible. Not true. Our entire mass consists of passages from the bible. We read the Gospel at every mass; we use the psalms and other books of the bible for our readings. We love other faiths and welcome all Christians into our church. Thank you again for a great video. While many believe that Mennonite is a religious group, it sounds like it's much more about history, community, and culture. Your religious beliefs are not very different from the Baptist church that I grew up in or even the church I attend now although neither of these wear head coverings. Most say the head covering is not literal though I do not personally believe that. So far I have not been brave enough to wear a head covering and risk standing out and being questioned. Also, its meaning is an area of my life in which I struggle. You alluded to head-covering makers. How do you shop for something like that? Just everyone know someone in the area? Are there references from someone within the church? I live in California. I know that Mennonites live here and have churches here but I don't know of any head-covering shops or artists. Interesting that veils are considered more progressive. I think a more full head-covering than the token you all wear would be in more proper keeping of scripture.
Do you not have any divorced and remarried couples/families in your church? Are there any people there who did not come to Christ until later in life and perhaps were not raised in a believing home? Or perhaps were raised in a Christian home but rejected it for 20 or so years and then came back? You both seem to have lovely husbands but do any have husbands that use religion as the tool to sort of lord it over their wives and not do right themselves?

Hey there. I just wanted to jump on and clarify something that unfortunately many people believe about Catholics. I am a Catholic and we/I do not pray to the saints or Mary.
I guess the best way to describe it is this. Have you ever been in a situation where you have asked one of your friends to pray for you? Someone you trust that you know will pray Gods will in your life and situation? Well, that’s how I personally talk to Mary. I will
Ask her to please pray/intercede to her Son on my behalf. I mean who better to ask to pray for you than Jesus’s mother?! That’s why we say “Holy Mary, mother of God PRAY for us. It’s the same with the saints, we just ask them to pray for
    Us regarding a certain situation.
Jayna, completely agree. We are all saints in this world, just trying to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and to help walk each other home.
Thanks for reading, I just wanted to clarify that.

Catholics don't pray to the saints, as we would to Jesus and God. We pray for their intercession, much like you would a friend or prayer warrior. People also think that we pray the rosary to Mary. The rosary was developed to help Christians meditate on the various events in Christ's life when people were illiterate or didn't have access to the Bible. The Hail Mary is a prayer asking for Mary's intercession in our behalf.

      1 Samuel 28:7-19.
Mary was a sinner, saved by grace, she was a finite being, with limitations. She is not omniscient.
How can she possibly intercede for millions of people?

✍ Hello Ladies... I grew up in a very strict Grace Wesleyan Methodist Church. My uncle was a Pilgrim Holiness preacher and in the early 60s the 2 churches merged together well we had many Mennonites who attended our church and a head covering
of some kind was worn by most women also they didn't believe in wearing wedding rings but exchanged watches because its a time piece also no shorts, pants, short sleeves, cosmetics so I can understand your Mennonite belief. You girls were speaking about how you wish the Bible would be more black and white well...when Catholics have a Bible study its usually lead by a priest or a deacon because we as the participant aren't schooled in the languages and interpretations the Bible is written. You and I are going to read the Bible and interpret in different ways but a priest is going to teach it the way God wants us to understand. I have a friend who belongs to one of those churches that have no affiliation to any particular group and she goes to a Women's Bible study and just anyone can lead a bible study class but they aren't schooled in religion or any particular faith. she was telling me what they talked about well I won't argue religion but what she was saying was all wrong from what the Bible actually is trying to get across. So I don't talk to her anymore about her Bible study I just change the subject. The Old testament was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic and the New Testament in Greek. A Catholic priest has to learn all that. So that's why I wouldn't go to a class held by just anyone no matter how good their intentions. The Bible mentions a woman's head must be covered...no jewelry etc. so there is scripture to back up those beliefs. Well its late Good Night😴 God Bless LuvYa! Bye from NE Ohio🌹

Private school teachers often go to teacher training courses and have yearly workshops trainings, so there is still a level of training and continuing education.

Don't profess to know the will of God because you're basing it all on books written by mortals. If you cannot see that, I don't know what to tell you. It's the height of judgement, pride and ego. If you believe these things, I low-key feel sorry for you. If you believe the kingdom of God is only for Christ followers, shame on you. Just go back to status quo and leave me alone.

Amen! I got convicted on this a few months ago after doing a study on baptism(basically looking up all verses on baptism in the NT) and got baptized(or re-baptized if one thinks the first one was somehow valid) as a true believer. My life has changed since and I now have so much more confidence in the assurance of my salvation. I just encourage everyone to read the Bible and take it as it says without believing our pre-concieved ideas or how we were taught, more then what the Bible actually says..It was a hard thing for me as I had a strong belief on the common belief on salvation, but God helped me humble myself and He helped me want nothing but His truth and what the Bible says. Praise God! Also, in John 3, Jesus said we must be born again, ..by water and by the Spirit. I believe by water He is talking about water baptism. And btw, baptism ALWAYS means dipping, immersing, fully made wet. Look up the definition in like a Strong's concordance. Baptism is never sprinkling just like walking is never running etc.

PS...We don't pray to the saints. Its like asking someone to pray for you. People are so misguided when they speak about Catholics. Learn, before you speak about the original faith. Martin Luther caused all this miscommunication because he wanted a divorce and the Catholic church wouldn't allow it.

Henry VIII, not Martin Luther, wanted a divorce, and the Catholic Church would not allow it; thus, he created the Church of England, which King Charles is currently head of.

Martin Luther was single when he left the Catholic Church. He married late and he never divorced.

@@joycemiraglia280 Henry VIII was the one who left the Roman Catholic Church to get a divorce.
