Jordans "looked after", because he's damn good at what he does for Eagles fans, like myself, everywhere and he only gets better as time passes. Check out his PFF grade when you get a chance. He's part of an offensive line that's being heralded as one of the greatest in history. Thank you Rugby for making sure our guy made it to the NFL! Edit: I'd talk about how awesome of a person he is, but I'm just trying to keep the main thing the main thing.
I first watched and listened to him in a documentary about the International Player Pathway. I remarked at the time, that if it were possible to build an NFL offensive tackle in a laboratory, the result would be Jordan Mailata. As for his take on the comparison between rugby (Union or League) and gridiron football, he's absolutely correct. People focus far too much on the protective gear, or the lack thereof. It's not about shoulder pads and helmets, or the size, strength, and pace of the players. It's all about the relative designs of each sport, the general flow of play therein, and the rules governing contact in one as opposed to the other. In rugby, the general flow of play tends to be perpendicular/horizontal relative to the direction of attack. In gridiron football, the direction of attack tends to be parallel/vertical to direction of attack. That distinction means that gridiron players tend to close distance faster, and thus collide more violently. In rugby, violent contact is generally limited to interactions between ball carrier and tackler. Off ball contact (IE, shepherding) is not permitted. In gridiron football, everyone is fair game. Not only is off ball contact (IE blocking) permitted, it is actually the sole legal function of some players, including Mailata. I am American and obviously grew up with our game. But I am astute and objective enough to recognize the relative difficulties of the requirements of each game. Rugby players generally require a higher degree of cardio fitness. Their sport requires more *all around* athleticism and skill. On the other hand, football players are far more specialized. Within the context of their position, they are masterful, world class athletes, but would be fish out of water in a different role. Furthermore, because of the start/stop nature of play, they need a far greater degree of explosiveness. This comes at the expense of cardio. Nothing but respect for elite level athletes, regardless of sport. I have been in Jordan's corner since first I learned of him.
Your comparison is wrong. I’m not sure what level of Rugby you got. Jordan is a great athlete however he’s not a great rugby player, he’s more an average rugby player like he didn’t even get picked by his own team and he never got to play in the highest level. Pro rugby players are another level. Rugby needs intensity , fitness, and physicality. You gotta stand up and tackle and back up again or sometimes pick up the ball and start attacking instantly so the game switches whereas football you collide and stops give ya body and mind a break to think about the next move and so. Like I said he switched from Rugby league to nfl purely because of $ and he wasn’t a “Pro” rugby player, not even close.
I think the coaches have nailed JM's weight this season. He was probably 15lbs too heavy last season, he looked slow and top heavy. This season he's been looking great, moving really well.
I can remember Will Greenwood recalling when the England team were waitng in the tunnel lined up aginst Samoa in a 2003 world cup game when he looked across at the Samoan centre's and thought shit the tops of their legs are thicker than my waist. After watching this and hearing the context behind his answer on the podcast and what he was actually comparing I can completely understand where Jordan’s coming from! He went from being an interchange bench player just coming on and crashing around for limited minutes to having to do probably one of the hardest jobs in a sport he didn’t even think about growing up! So I’d say it’s fair what he said! Him at centre or wing would be hilarious! Maybe him and a few of his mates (once they are out of the NFL) could be thrown in a World XV or barbarians team at various positions in a charity game or something! I’m sure it would bring a crowd and be pretty entertaining! Loosen the rules up slightly and let them have fun!
Jordan is lucky he came through the Rugby League system. It prepared him well for the NFL in term of his exposiveness (for his size), agility and power combination - At the Left Tackle position. If he played rugby union he would have been put into the forwards and be even heavier so his power would dominate his agility and explosiveness. Reducing his chance of success in the NFL when he tried out. But kudos to the man for his perseverence..he deserves all the rewards hes getting.
@ Trying to make it to first grade NRL he managed to bring his weight down to around 130kg but that was still too big. The silver lining tho was he was in peak conditioning for the O-linewhen the IMG pathways came ...and naturally told to put on weight. @ he’s speaking to an international audience, so people tend to say “rugby” so as not to confuse the issue, I don’t know his whole history, but he’s from an area of Sydney that’s not really known for Rugby Union, it’s more of a working class league area, as far as I know, growing up he played league, I saw him play several times & he was just too big & immobile, he wasn’t built for the endurance of league, he’d have had more chance in union because it’s slower, but ultimately he was a bit big for both
