Micro labels help give language to the people who WANT it. Not everyone has to use them, the point of these terms is to help people accept and feel like themselves. To help them find people who are like them. So basically what I’m trying to say is; respect people’s identities. And ya know, respect other people in general.
Can someone tell me why some people hate the pan lable so much? I've heard the origins of it are biphobic, but we've reclaimed slurs for impowerment, so why can't we do the same for pan? Sure, the origins were bad, but now it's kind of morphed into something else. I genuinely want to know, I wasn't involved in the tumblr era of all of this
Im confused too. I just saw the tiktok where they said "I'm not saying its okay to go by pan instead of bi" ive known pan ever since i was little I just didn't have a word for it, and i have never felt comfortable with being told im bisexual.
Pastell - okay buckle up for this one, it’s going to be a long one. Let me preface this by saying that I am a person who identifies as bi, although I could very much fit under the definition of pan as well, and that I am just telling the story as I know it. Okay. So basically being bi means having an attraction to two or more genders, right? Just so we agree on that. It has different personal meanings for each person who experiences bi-ness, but the general term is that it means attraction to two *or more* genders. That ‘or more’ part is important, and if you don’t agree with it, bring it up and let’s talk about that! Now, the term pan recently came about because being non-binary started to be more explored (popularized? Non-binary people have always existed, but what I mean is that being non-binary started to become more prevalent in queer spaces with western views of the world.) Anyway, non-binary people started getting more recognition in queer spaces. When people became attracted to non-binary people, they thought they needed a new word for that attraction because they didn’t realize that bi encompasses that attraction. (Do you remember that ‘or more’ part in the definition of bi? They didn’t.) The term pan came about because people looked only at the literal meaning of bi (Latin suffix meaning ‘two’) and not the contextual and cultural definition (attraction for two *or more* genders). They then took the suffix ‘pan’ (meaning all) and created the term pansexual, which means attraction to *all* genders. Now, I believe there is nothing inherently wrong with the label pan, it just was created because of a misunderstanding of the definition of the term bi, (and has since grown into an amazing label with a wonderful community) but the use of the label pan in certain circumstances has been very invalidating to bi people, so I can understand where people are coming from. So, here are the main two ways that the label pan has been used to invalidate bi people: 1) Saying that bi people can *only* be attracted to two genders is biphobic because it invalidates and erases people who are bi and experience attraction to more than two genders. (And if anyone is going to say “but then they’re just pan!” think about how what you have just read relates to what you have just said and also about how you have no say over another person’s labels.) 2) This is the big one: some pan people took up to saying “hearts not parts!” (which I fricking hate and cannot stand talking about, but hey let’s talk about it.) That saying became a very popular slogan for pansexual people. Now the reason this is *very* biphobic is because it implies that pansexual people care about a person’s personality (‘hearts’) while bi people *only* care about a person’s genitalia (‘parts’), which is just. Ugh. Super biphobic. And weird. And ugh. Bad. (...Can you tell I don’t like talking about this saying?) There’s also stuff about how the saying implies that gender=genitalia, but I’m going to save myself from even more discomfort and hope that I don’t need to spell it out for you. So although bi has culturally meant attraction to two or more genders since even before non-binary identities started to become more prevalent (see the bisexual manifesto from 1991, I believe), there was a period around the early-to-mid 2010s (I think) where people just accepted that bi meant (only) two, and pan meant all. This is where ‘hearts not parts’ came in and all. And the discourse. I’m not too good on dates and time periods so correct me on that if I’m wrong. Nowadays, I think we’ve (mostly) come to the understanding that bi means two *or more* and that pan means all (with differing personal meanings for each individual who experiences bi-ness or pan-ness). Someone can be bi and be attracted to all genders (because technically that is two or more), and if they choose to identify as bi instead of pan then *they are bi* and that is the end of the discussion. I hope we can all be respectful of each other’s identities and *let people identify the way they identify* rather than decide which identities *we* think fit *them* better. I hope this was informative! I don’t know everything, so I encourage you to do your own research. If I said anything that was inaccurate, please correct me! If you disagree with anything I said, let’s talk about that *respectfully!* I hope you all have a wonderful day. Bi/pan solidarity!
@@zombiedude9826 thank you for explaining that! However, what I've heard is that identifing as pan means you are gender blind, so you don't have gender preferences and the gender of the person doesn't matter. Is that right?
