  • As a part of the process of getting a dust control system in place, I needed some blast gates to control the air flow. Here's how I did it.
For more information and free plans, please see the written article at my website:
    www.madebymagnu...
I wanted a design that were somewhat clog free and also worked in narrow places. Without too much investigation on the web I decided on the design and started building it. During the building I also took some pictures that I shared on a forum about "my design". I was immediately informed that I wasn't first with this design! ;)
Apparantly "Geeks Wood Shop" published his version a half year earlier: • Dust Collection Blast ...
Nevertheless, I had already filmed everything so I decided to upload the video anyhow.
The design consist of two pieces of 12mm (~1/2") plywood with a moving piece of 4mm (~5/32") plywood in between. The design is made in Sketchup and printed with the help of Matthias Wandels program "Big print". I assembled the three parts with a M6 bolt (~1/4" machine screw) and locking nut. Then I drilled the large hole. By doing this I was sure to get a smooth finnish on the inside when the blast gate was open. The design of these blast gates are dimensioned to fit a 100mm (~4") ventilation pipe.

You've inspired me. I was planning on building a compact table saw / miter saw station. I was trying to figure out how to easily switch dust collection between the two. I'll try altering your plans and build a "twin" gate to flip between each dust port.

That sounds like an interesting solution!

Funny that I hadn't seen your build before, but fantastic work. Really hard to have "'original" ideas anymore, I found a similar example before building mine. These are awesome, and your video quality is tops, nice work brother.

Yes both blast gates are very similar; but, I prefer your execution. It is less complicated and requires less hardware.

+Paul Glassbrenner Drilling the large holes with all three parts assembled resulted in a very smooth interior surface.

looks like a good design, but how air tight is it?

Thanks! Well, it seems to be air tight enough to work in my system.

Where did you get the ducts?

    • @MadebyMagnus
      @MadebyMagnus  7 років тому

+Nathan Ratchford It's standard ventilation ducts that I got at my local store for ventilation and building material.

Made by Magnus interesting. My Lowe's has the snap lock with one long seam. I haven't seen spiral seamed ducts there. Thanks and good video!

You can get the spiral ducting at an HVAC supply store in your town .It's more rigid than the single seam ducting . They will usually sell to the public. I've never had a problem purchasing it in my town !

Nice video. At ua-cam.com/video/szyitz53nzM/v-deo.html you don't seem to be hitting the center of the circle, but maybe that is an optical illusion.

Thanks Anthon! I agree, it looks like I'm a bit off in the video. However, I didn't noticed it when making it and they work great.

You used your ruler as a compass later on, so the mark was only needed to get the form fitting on uncut board.
