My Tripadvisor review from 9/2013 trip:
After much research, and almost deciding on another location before my wife and I came across Congo Bongo, we made the decision to spend 6 nights at the Dream House mid-Sept.. With all the beautiful pics and videos we watched about Congo Bongo, we were expecting paradise. We got that and much, much, more! We arrived about 8 PM by taxi, about an hour later than expected due to Independence Day Eve children's parades along bus route, and Ernesto was there with a smile to show us our Dream House and help us with our luggage. We were exhausted after an almost 19 hour travel time from home. One of the first nice touches we noticed were the motion sensor lights along the pathways between houses. Made moving around at night very easy on the property. The Dream House was everything we expected and more. The house, appliances, room, and surrounding property were all clean and well kept, and of course a wonderful bottle of wine awaiting us. Actually needed something a bit stronger after that long adventure getting there and some Flor de Caña 7 Year aged rum hit the spot. After resting a bit, we were not going to let a 200 yd walk through the forest in pitch black night stop us from getting the beach and ocean. Luckily came well supplied with good flashlights and other lights, a necessity to truly enjoy this place at night. After a beautiful trek at night through the grounds, half of path well groomed gravel the other half the boardwalk, we made it to the beach. Laying down on this beautiful clean beach we felt our stress just melt into the sand. Even at night, there was a near full moon, we could see the beauty in this paradise we had found.
The next morning we were awoken early as the say by the howler monkeys. What a wonderful alarm clock. We spent quite a few hours just enjoying the sights around the bungalow having coffee, the immense trees, colorful flowers everywhere, hummingbirds, toucans, howler and monkeys………ALL from the comfort of our bungalow. Daan and their daughter came by early to make sure we settled in and see if we needed anything. Shortly later Marisol, his wonderful wife, came by also to introduce herself. We never were really in need of much. Everything needed was supplied at the bungalow. We made a quick stop at the grocery on way down from PV in taxi so had basic supplies to get us through until the golf cart we rented from Fernando and Soledad at El Refugio Grill was delivered the next morning. We explored the beautiful isolated beach that morning, snorkeled, and just laid back in wonderment of the gem we found. If we saw 5 people all day out there cross our path it was a lot. A couple of days we didn't come across a soul while we were there. The Dream House by the way is the closest house to the beach path. The houses provide plenty of privacy, we could barely here a voice from another house at night a couple of times. Everyone there is very respectful of your privacy making sure to call out and be recognized before coming up to the house. Anytime we left for a while in the morning, we would come back later and have anything we had put in basket and even items we left out to dry on clothesline washed and dried, and the bungalow well cleaned. First day on way back from Manzanillo by the main road entrance we came across a sloth just a couple of feet above our heads walking along the power line….how cool is that!
Daan, Marisol, and Ernesto were always available for information and checked on us regularly to make sure we were not in need of anything. Daan even got up with Guillermo at Punta Uva Diving to setup a dive for me and the wife since he had just been diving with them that day and I was having trouble getting up with the shop. Unluckily my grace got in the way the night before the dive. We had had a wonderful dinner at El Refugio and I think I was still in a churrasco coma when in the middle of the night I missed a step, had a great fall, and twisted my ankle pretty badly. No fault of anyone or the property, just my 50+ year old grace. In the morning we were having coffee, icing down my ankle, and getting ready to ride the cart up to PV to get an ace bandage and walking stick or cane. This was not going to stop my enjoyment of the fantastic place. As soon as Daan noticed our cart still there past the time of the dive, he came and checked on us. After telling him what happened and our plans, he told us we don't need to buy a cane, plenty of sticks around here. Within minutes Marisol came to check on me and offer any assistance and within 10 minutes Ernesto showed up with a custom made cane for me, perfect size and everything! Now that is the type of attention to detail that this wonderful family shows at Congo Bongo.
We made great fresh fruit daiquiris in the blender and meals on the grill in the well supplied and clean kitchen. Took a trip by boat with Delroy for some dolphin watching and a tour of the Punta Mona Organic Permaculture farm. We explored PV and about every nook and cranny along the coast from PV to the Southern tip of Manzanillo with the golf cart.....highly recommend for all. Biking sounds great until the reality sets in with hills, heat, etc. and we saw lots of unhappy faces riding or walking their bikes up hills where the bridges are located.
We never felt anything but 100% safe on the property and having the dogs around was a nice bonus since we missed our four furry babies. They were well behaved and if you didn't want them around at the time, they didn't bother you at all.
Thanks to that cane I was able to get around and still enjoy everything around us. Heck, I still went snorkeling the next day with one fin and even on our last night spent in San Jose, walked all over downtown thanks to that cane. Guess I have a pretty high tolerance to pain since turns out I had broken my ankle when I got back to the states. Daan, Marisol, and Ernesto where there to see us off to the bus in the morning and Ernesto even helped us with the luggage and getting the cart back after making sure we got on the bus o.k. from Manzanillo.
All in all a fantastic time at Congo Bongo. We couldn't have asked for more and probably wouldn't have had a better, more beautiful place at 3 times the price! There is not one negative I can say about Congo Bongo. We feel like we made new friends with Daan, Marisol, and Ernesto and hope to see them and this paradise again soon!
