Tammy I truly appreciate you doing this taste test..I'm 62 and I've been baking since I was 12 years old. Here's my opinion the refrigerated pie dough has some what of an odor to them, and an after taste.I bake mine from scratch like mom and grandma used to. I've had bad experiences with store brands, therefore I never buy anything that's a store brand. I have use the Marie Callander once in a while,It's as close to homemade. I try to keep homemade on hand, I make and freeze them. This is just my personal opinion, and I respect your choices and opinions from one baker to another. I enjoy your video's again thank you.

Growing up my maternal grandma either made her pie crust from scratch or used a Pet Ritz frozen crust. When I started making pies I used the Jiffy pie crust mix. They always turned out beautifully. This Thanksgiving I used the Walmart frozen pie crust for my chess pies and they turned out very well. Thank you for doing this taste and baking test. Sometimes we think you get what you pay for but in this case that isn't true, is it? I'll have to give the Walmart refrigerator crust a try. I love that Chris is supportive and a good sport. God bless ya'll!

When I blind bake a pie crust, I line the crust with foil or parchment and fill with pie weights or beans. I have no bulging, cracking or slipping of the crust.

So glad you did this test, Tammy. It helps to be able to use an already prepared crust when you want to, or need to. I never know which one to buy! Do you ever use beans, or those little round balls, in the bottom of the pies as you prebake them so they won’t rise in the bottom? Chris is a great sport!!

I have used the Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts for more years than I can remember. I have never had any pie crust bubble up like those did. First of all, I only bake the empty shell if I'm going to make a pie filling that doesn't need to bake so in that case I do prick the shell and bake it with foil and beans inside ... comes out beautiful. For any pie that the filling is going to be baked, I don't bake the shell first and I have never baked a pumpkin or pecan pie that the shell bubbled up. Actually, my Mom made the best pie crust of any I have ever seen or tasted in my 67 years, but I just don't have the patience to try and do hers. EDIT: I guess I should add that with the Pillsbury refrigerated crust, I have always unrolled them on a floured board and rolled them out a little as I think they are a little thick for my liking.

Great video Tammy. I think woman actually have better tasting skills because most men will eat any sweets. Either their Momma was a good, or a bad cook. Chris however is used to your good cooking and cooks himself.
My son too is a good cook, he cooks dinner most every night. He grew up eating my good cooking which I learned from my Momma as you did. Like you, he uses the refrigerated pie crusts, even for such things as chicken pot pie. He knows and tastes the difference.
My husband whose mother was a horrible cook didn't know any better, would have loved any of them, before he married me.
Then there are those guys and girls that will eat anything.

Last night I made a blueberry pie using the Great Value Walmart refrigerated pie crust (not frozen), and while the homemade filling turned out very tasty, the pie crust itself tastes horrible. Hence why I'm on here trying to find a better alternative. They were all out of the Pillsbury brand, and since I was making a fruit pie To me it tastes artificial. Whatever fat they used in producing the crust most certainly isn't butter or even Crisco. It tastes like something not made for human consumption, like you'd more likely use it to grease the axles on a trailer than you would cook with it. Which is why I'm here trying to find a better alternative. Short of not being lazy and making my own, that is. I really wish those frozen crusts in their own pans came with a top crust as well. Why doesn't any company make that?
UPDATE: Okay, now that I watched the video, I'm shocked you chose the Walmart pie, and think maybe I might have just gotten a bad one. However, in all fairness, when I was at Walmart choosing the pie crust, they were completely out of the Pillsbury refrigerated crusts, and they only had about 5 or 6 of the Great Value ones, and I picked and looked at all of them because all of the boxes looked kind of tattered and beat up. So I don't know, maybe it was a freshness issue, and I need to wait until they replenish their stock and try and new one.
What I actually need to do is stop being a lazy ass and actually make a homemade pie crust. But it's just sooooo much work 😭

I used to always use the Pillsbury rollout refrigerated crust but since about last year, they must have changed the recipe or something. No longer is it delicately flakey and reliable. Now it shrinks under the filling or edges will just slough off and burn in the bottom of the oven. The texture is dusty and not flakey at all, more like a Nilla Wafer except the taste is just oil and flour. I'll try the Walmart refrigerated crust but if anyone has ideas, I'm all ears. I used to make beautiful lattice apple pies and the repeated crimes against my art are depressing me
