I absolutely love your style of videos. They are perfect! So many other videos are either of people vacationing or sitting in their homes talking. This is what I needed. To SEE what I thought was a much more heavily populated island, but I'm thinking Oahu is perfect for my son and I! Can't wait to get things in order to make the jump! Part of my move is to get away from controlling and occasionally abusive family so I can actually grow and LIVE. There are many other driving factors for HI being my choice, of course. My family will hate me, but I've made the decision to no longer allow my life to be controlled through guilt trips. And they won't understand. Everyone has stayed in the same town, let alone state. Ugh. DE is ok, but HI has so much more to offer ME and I gotta live for me. Sooo ready to go!

Fantasy vs. Reality - My wife and I had been to Hawaii a couple times, first in 1975. Our first time, we camped out and rode our bicycles around 3 islands for 3 months. Several years later, with 2 kids in elementary school, we moved to Hilo and stayed a year. Prior to moving, we knew that most people move back to the mainland and do NOT stay permanently in Hawaii for various reasons, including family as you mentioned. We also had an almost immediate church family in Hilo which we became part of and contributed to. But after about a year, we (mostly my wife) decided that we needed to move back to far northern, rural California. We enjoyed a lot about living on the Hilo side of the island.
After about 5 months of having fun while our kids were in school, we decided to find jobs - which was a little difficult at first. But we both got work substitute teaching all over the greater Hilo area.
The main factors (after a year) for us moving back to Calif. were : too much rain on the Hilo side (moldy shoes, moldy books, damp clothes, cabin fever - too much rain), our kids were speaking pidgin, the kids were getting luau feet (from wearing slippas all the time), and realizing that no one would be coming to visit us - in spite of what they had told us.
We risked it all, and sold the "farm" so that we could move to and live in Hawaii. Fortunately we didn't end up penniless for doing so. We did some research, and made some calculated investments in Hawaii that ended up paying for our whole time there, and allowed us to move back to Calif. and start over again.
It was a great experience, I'm glad we did it. It is really important to separate Fantasy from Reality when considering moving to Hawaii. In some ways, I would like to move back. I still can't separate the Fantasy of living in Hawaii from the Reality!

Great Video! I moved to Kauai in 2015 and left all my family behind in Las Vegas. My daughter (now 15) and I moved here with a dog, cat and few belongings. We didn't see much of our family even living 15 minutes away from them so moving here didn't really change that much. My adult son came to visit one time in almost 3 years ( I paid) and as you said in the video, I haven't gotten off the island since moving here. I plan to head to Vegas eventually, but mostly to see old friends, and hopefully get some more things from storage. A network on the island of choice is HUGE. We chose to connect and got hanai'd by our church. A network is very important for jobs, place to live if renting, acclimating to the culture of Hawaii and so much more. I look forward to future videos. Aloha & Mahalo :)

Thanks Peter. While moving to Hawaii permanently has always been a strong desire, my wife and I realized that a more realistic approach because of family is to move there for a year or two. We'll hopefully be empty nesters soon after 40 years so now is our time. We appreciate appreciate your honest approach as well as the enthusiasm that you obviously have for Hawaii and wanting to share it with all.

I enjoyed the scenery and the topic was good food for thought, I'm sure many don't really think through how family / friends might be impacted and especially projecting how they might feel about it in the months & years after moving. Audio quality was good for me, looks like a nice windproof mic. Length was about right and the teasers at the end were a nice addition / incentive to watch it all. Great first video, looking forward to more Peter.

Just what the doctor ordered! If I do make the move, I would live alone with a pet & keep active with the church & doing charity work & exercising at a gym or dojo. One of the main reasons I would go, is to be more active into old age. I want to live in a warm climate, with great metro, where everthing is walking distance. I believe this will keep me more active as I age. Not having to deal with the icy walkways and joint aches from the cold is a huge plus. Thanks for this! Be well!

Nice vid. Very well said. I live in Vancouver, BC and what you said rings true. I've been here for 7 years but I'm planning on moving back East this Summer. The Parallels are very similar between Vancouver and Hawaii. Pacific ocean, tourist destination, isolation besides Portland and Seattle compared to dozens of cities close to Montreal, very very high living costs, insanely expensive flights through Canada back East, thousands for round trip during holidays. Family and friends all came to visit first few years and now no one comes by last 5 years. Feel very alone and just got a new nephew back East. I'll never be able to buy here as I'm not a millionaire. Vancouver is the 2nd most unaffordable city in the World! I absolutely adore Vancouver, nowhere else can you have a big city with mountains 15 minutes away and a beach on the ocean with a ton of greenery, parks, bike lanes. Just am no longer happy and keeping up with appearances just to say you live in Vancouver much like Hawaii isn't worth it.
Listen to this man. Very well said Mr. Peter Kay. Family is always number 1

I would definitely retire in Vancouver or Hawaii even the National Parks like Jasper, Alberta where I loved living for a year as a kid but living as a young professional with my career options all back East, it makes little sense to stay here in Vancity

My wife and I are here for a trial run. 3 months this time and we'll be back in the fall for some more. We have gone to a couple of open houses where the people selling are moving back to the mainland to be closer to family. We met a young couple with a 4 month old baby today. The parents of this child have lived here for 6 years but the were shipping their car to the mainland when I was picking mine up from the mainland. They wanted to be near family so their child could know his grandparents. To my wife and I, we think we'll wind up splitting our time between here and the mainland. 3-4 months at a time in each location. Kind of sad and scary too to meet or hear about so many people leaving because of the draw of family.

Hi Peter! Thank you, I appreciate your videos. I am moving to the Big Island January 16 with my daughter (age 11). My son (age 2) and his father (also named Peter) will arrive the following month and we will explore the area together. He has a home on Long Island (thus more commitments) and I am the more free spirited one exploring the terrain before we all leap. I watched a previous video where you said many people who move to Hawaii return to the mainland in a few months. I am interested to see what happens when we move! Ive visited the Island a few times before and its always felt like home. Initially, my daughter and I will stay on a farm/retreat center doing a work exchange program, homeschooling, and assisting with their workshops. Our hosts are amazing, also "Hawaiian Islanders" who have called the island home for over 20 years. I think they will point us in the right direction if this move feels permanent (or semi-permanent as we may decide to spend summers in Long Island). Thank you again for your perspective and best of luck!

My husband and I moved to California from Idaho in 1991. It has been the hardest place to fit in and establish friendships. I love the weather, have learned to garden, and had great health care, after being born with a rare congenital defect. I am not close to my family, and in fact as of December have one sister left. After years of trying, I am not close to nieces and nephews. I learned in 1980 that family can be anyone, so yes, I have friends around he US, but few have visited us over the years. My husband's sister and brother either meet somewhere or visit us once a year for 3-5 days. Moving further from my best friend in Montana will be the hardest, but moving back to Montana is not what I want. I like being warm and hate being cold.
I have allergies and have been mostly homebound for several years. I want an opportunity to see if living in Hawaii will give me a higher quality of life. We are looking at the Waimea area, dry side of the Big Island. My husband retires December 2021 at age 70. The move is for me as my life long desire to live closer to the warm ocean waters. (My mom is from the coast of North Carolina. Weather there in winter is cold, but the ocean and surroundings are wonderful, although too hot and humid in the summer.)
Your survey told us to stay where we are, although once Doug retires, he wants out of California. It has always been his plan. We do not have close friends here. Also, he is very much an introvert, and I have become so due to my health. I am pretty friendly and like meeting new people, mostly one on one in the beginning. I would like to become involved in a church, and learn about the community and their culture. I would like to find others who do crafts and spend time with them. I like knitting, but will bring my sewing machines with me.
I have been following you for a least a year, and your information has been helpful. This move is not something I am taking lightly. I do have concerns, could easily not follow through because of the challenges, but I have not come up with a alternative place to live. Additionally, a friend since birth lives in a condo in Waikoloa Village where we stayed two years ago for two weeks. He has been a great resource over the past couple years. He is not full time in Hawaii, as he loves Montana summers. If we could swing it, that would be ideal, but since Doug began his career later in life, we are not in the position to have two homes. Doug is not willing to rent out space if we are not there, which my friend does.
So, we may not live in Hawaii until we die, but I do not want to give up an opportunity to live somewhere different and have time with Doug to enjoy life together. We met and married in our 30's.
Thank you for you information. I will continue following you.

Karen - I would be very careful when expecting Hawaii to meet many of your needs. Hawaii can make your life even more challenging. If you live on the dry side of the island, the heat every day can be a bit much. If you can afford to live in Waimea (Kameula), the air is really refreshing, but there's not much to do there, and it's a bit of a drive down to Kona Kailua Your allergies could actually become worse in Hawaii. Hawaii can also be a tough place to make new friends, but if you become part of a church (part of the church family), it will make a huge difference and really make living in Hawaii enjoyable. Otherwise, Hawaii can be a lonely place. I liked living on the Big Island, but I like living in far northern California better. Be sure to volunteer after you move there, you will make so many new friends, and learn so much more about life in Hawaii. Remember that vacationing in Hawaii is way different than living in Hawaii. We lived in Hilo for a year when we had young children, and we had visited/vacationed there a few times I suggest moving to Hawaii with a backup plan to move back to the mainland if it's not what you really want. Don't burn bridges, and force yourself to stay in Hawaii if you don't like it. Think of it as an experiment or an experience that you will be able to treasure, and that will add more variety to your life. Many local Hawaii-born residents move to the mainland looking for a better life. John in Butte county, CA

@@johnr.6029 Thank you for your response and your concerns. As I said in my response to Peter, I do plan to become involved in a church, and In fact, plan to contact it in the next week to see if they can hook me up with someone who is willing to correspond with me now. I have been communicating with a realtor there and asked a lot of questions, so I am not going in blind. I do not have a plan B, (well I do, but I am not crazy about it) because my husband and I have never been able to agree on where to live after moving from here. He never planned to stay after retiring, but I am not willing to return to Montana. I tell everyone, if we do not like it we can move back to the mainland. At least I will have tried it instead of wondering. Additionally, I do have reservations, and my major one concerns my allergies, but I have them in other places too. I grew up in a small town in Montana and lived in a bit larger one in Idaho, so I am familiar and comfortable with not having much to do. I am pretty good at entertaining myself. I have never felt comfortable on the freeways in the SF Bay Area, and get most items online. I enjoy gardening, but not in 90 to 100 degree temperatures like in Livermore. Kona and Hilo are not options nor is the wet side of Waimea. We can afford a home on the dry side, and are aware that we will be making compromises in what we want verses what we can afford. I do expect the move and settling in to be challenging. We are retiring, we are moving to, in essence, a new country, health and dental insurance will change, and I will be further from my best friend in Montana. But those are true no matter where we move. I have been researching places to live since summer of 2013. Hawaii was not my first choice, but the only one my husband would agree to. I look forward to the farmer's markets and meeting the different artisans. I especially look forward to walking on the beach, probably only once a week and in the evening. Life is rarely as we expect , want or dream. Time will tell . . .

You need to update your prices. Round trip tickets are $497 from Albuquerque New Mexico. I live in the mainland and I cannot get my daughter to come visit to me even though I live in the mainland. I can call her once a week. And she always cancels her plans to come visit me in Albuquerque. Because this place sucks. I'm going to be living in Paradise with the house. There will be no Hotel fees and no airfare because I will buy the plane ticket for her. And her family if she gets married. I'm already on vacation. All I need is to buy my family plane tickets which are under $500 round trip right now. I will see my daughter at least once a year whereas now I haven't seen her in three. I currently make $85K a year plus the $9600. Am I better off looking elsewhere? Is that enough money to live and enjoy Oahu?. Or am I florida bound with the rest of the sun lovers in my income bracket. Last thing I want is to be on Oahu and broke due to cost of living.

First off, your videos are tremendous and by far my favorite on yt. Ok, my wife and I and our 2 sons (10 & 6) want this. I've been a tv cameraman for twenty years and seeking a staff or permalance position at a tv station or audio video co. My wife is a medical technologist and would like a full or part time position at any hospital, red cross or clinic. We are beach people, in particular love to take our Jeep to the 4wd beaches in the Outer Banks, NC. But the OBX are over two hours away. We have considered moving there but I'll be 48 this June and my wife will be 47 also in June. And cold weather is not fun anymore. Let us know what island would be best for what we do.
Greatly appreciate your time. Aloha! 🏝⛰⛱🌞🕆

I have been actively researching jobs in counseling in Hawaii, and have a few leads and opportunities. I am thinking of moving there from Vermont, with my 8 year old son. He is sad about the idea of leaving his friends, but I feel sure he can find new ones. I want to make the move for my health. I am mostly concerned about moving my stuff and my car, and finding a decent place to live :-)

Hello Peter, Oh, how I have longed to know somebody in Hawaii, and to get the nitty gritty of the islands. I am from Portland Maine originally, then to Massachusetts for eight years and on to San Diego now living in California 32 years with the ardent desire to retire in in Hawaii in a little over 3 years or around 2021. I do hope it can come true because I have not been to the Hawaiian Islands as yet and itchy to get there in the next few years with the plans to seek out where I want to retire in peace.

Hey Peter! My wife and I have been researching the subject for over two years. We are in school. She will be a licenced occupational therapist and I will be a Landscape Architect. Oahu seems to be the best option. Mother in law will move with us. My biggest fear is that our salary will make it impossible to live in Oahu. I estimate household income before taxes at 110k. Not including mother in law. Thoughts?

You will get a guilt trip like no other, especially if you are leaving aging parents. I speak from experience. I heard constant complaints that I was selfish, how dare I live so far away, etc. The complaints stopped eventually, but it was very hurtful that they were so harsh about it.

I’m suffering due to the prices of basic homes in Hawaii. It’s either your rich or poor and let’s not talk about the poor indigenous homeless people sleeping on park benches or a garbage bag makeshift tent. I have a real solution every Island real estate 1/3 designated for those making over 300k and 1/3 under 100k , 1/3 40K or less. This formula would balance out the unfairness that has happened. As usual the rich buy everything up build McMansions causing rapid property values chain reaction of people that cannot pay even the taxes and lose what they’ve worked for. I cannot believe the travesty that is being allowed to take place there. Now we know why all the other Asianic Countries do NOT allow foreigners to own land but only lease it for 25-50 years because the rich always ruin it for uneducated working class and the indigenous. If I ruled over it I wouldn’t allow anyone making 100k or more to infiltrate and take over even Florida is unaffordable homeless everywhere especially Sarasota rich just walk right by them laying on the sidewalks.....

I live here, but not sure for how much longer.
It’s a badly run state, and citizens keep voting the same while expecting change
There are more people leaving Hawaii than moving here
It’s getting too expensive, compared to the mainland add 30% to your expenses such as groceries.
If you have kids, how can you justify going to the bank to ask for a $ 500,000 loan for your first apartment!
It’s just difficult to live the.
    Tourists - Too many

The timezone change is very neglected. You will stop talking to your family as much forget about Skype and FaceTime. If they are asleep as you finish work or vice versa. You will barely speak to your family besides text messages.

    • @davetrail
      @davetrail 6 років тому +1

The timezone isn't a major concern. I'm currently in San Diego so two hours isn't a big deal. We already have a place lined up, wife is getting transferred (also almost insta friend network) so job concerns are not a concern, and the reason for the move is I'll be closer to Asia where I travel at least once a month. This will save several hours off each trip. Also, if we don't like it, we move back home. No worries. I just don't understand the negativity. I've moved to new places before and some even further away from family and a larger timezone difference.
