The longer barrel is good, but your projectile placement is horrible. The round needs to be as rearward as possible in order to capture as much expanding gases as possible as it is propelled down the barrel.
It brings me much joy to see that my "Bunker City Planet 2" map is being used for the latest experiments (it was created just after the update that brought us the rotating motors). It's been awhile so I can't remember what adjustments I made to the metal, I didn't think I altered it that much, but I did feel the need to make the city solid to keep the buildings facing upwards relative to the core. The destruction vs stability was kind of hard to balance. I might eventually update it to be more destructible (or at least to ensure version compatibility). I wasn't planning to make a 3rd planet until there are a certain amount of new things in the game to make it it's own thing.
The projectile you are trying to fire needs to be sped up. If it gets hit with too much pressure, it will shatter, and you'll lose the projectile, so try slowly (within scope), increasing the force pushing against the projectile, it needs a propelant not an explosive
If you turn down the damp and cpow of a particle you can fit way more in the same space. And also turning down damp makes it more stable but less fluid.

Pretty limiting it seems, there are other 2d physics / building games, like People Playground, people have made functioning gun contraptions with magazines and stuff, made from metal plates and springs, not like the actual guns you can spawn in and give to NPCs. Also cannons too, although no armor deformation but there is gore!

@ the truth is interactions with too big particles costs more gpu time than bigger count of regular gridstep-sized particles
