  • This material is a collection of excerpts from the documentary film "Nascita di una dittatura" (Birth of a Dictatorship), directed by Sergio Zavola, which aired on Italian public television in 1972. Amadeo Bordiga gave an interview to its makers in June 1970, a month before his death. The interview was conducted by the journalist Edek Osser. It was the only interview in Bordiga's entire life. The entire interview, including excerpts not used in the film, was published in a text form in 1973. You can find the English translation here: libcom.org/article/against-an...
Amadeo Bordiga (1889-1970) was an Italian communist, co-founder and long-time leader of the Communist Party of Italy, who is mainly known for his intransigent criticism of the left's collaboration with bourgeois parties, his criticism of Stalinism and the USSR system, as well as his controversial and strictly materialist interpretation of fascism. In this interview, Bordiga had the opportunity to present his views and arguments on anti-fascism and party alliances and splits. These are the most well-known aspects of his work - even today, if anyone still remembers this figure. However, it is worth highlighting these lesser-known strands of his biography and work.
Bordiga relinquished the party leadership after his first arrest by the Fascists in 1923. When the government outlawed the activities of opposition parties in 1927, Bordiga was sent to prison, where he spent two years. In 1930, for his critical attitude to Stalin and the policies of the USSR, he was expelled from the party along the lines of the International subordinated to Stalin. Since his release from prison in 1929 until the end of the II World War, he lived away from politics and his former comrades while being under constant pressure from both the fascists, who saw him as a dangerous communist, and the orthodox communists, who saw him as a traitor and a renegade.
Bordiga returned to politics after the Second World War, but only as a publicist and theoretician. In the meantime, he pursued his learned profession as an engineer and devoted himself, among other things, to the rebuilding of war-ravaged Naples. Between 1949 and 1965 he wrote a multitude of texts on a very wide range of subjects. These included 136 articles that made up the series 'Sul filo del tempo' (On the Thread of Time) and appeared in the magazines 'Battaglia comunista' and 'Il programma comunista'. In them, he addressed issues related to history, anthropology, economics, physics, ecology, critique of militarism and the prospects for a communist future, but he also returned to critique of Stalinism and economic solutions of the USSR. His work became a point of reference for the so-called communist left or ultra-left, council communism and figures such as Jacques Camatte and Gilles Dauvé, the founders of the theory of communisation.
Only a handful of Bordiga's pre-war texts have been translated into English, and his post-war work has left few traces in the English-speaking world. Probably the best study of Bordiga's selected texts in English, complete with a comprehensive biographical and factual introduction, is the book "The Science and Passion of Communism", edited by Pietro Basso and with translations by Giacomo Donis and Patrick Camiller: library.lol/main/641A3800D509D...
