100% agree, I was about 35 when I decided to dress better those first stages were very simple, like brown brogues/ chukka boots instead of sneakers. A Polo/ Tucked in button down shirt instead of a graphic-T a Barbour quilted Chelsea Jacket instead of a Hoodie. Later, other items fell into place, better fitting dark blue non distressed jeans or chinos, a smart casual Navy Blazer and the finishing touches like putting on a half decent watch (I had a 38mm Tag Heuer Pro 2000, which was a graduation present from 10 years before) and a daily cologne (I started off with Old Spice, cheap but pleasant imho). Just those little changes as well as dropping some weight and being more well groomed, I simply felt more grown up, more professional at work and not to sound a snob, felt more middle class, felt like the person I wanted to be, that for some reason was too scared or lost my esteem to be.
I'm a New York transplant living in the Atlanta area for over 20 years and I find the guys here dress way too "casual" for me. To be honest, everything changed since COVID in 2020 and it seems no one wants to dress "nice" anymore except; me of course😂😅. Great "stuff" as usual John😊❤🎉💯.
Yeah man, before covid i was wearing suits and dress boots all day every day...but now jeans ,jacket , T shirt and casual sneakers.....crazy change every where...
Watch street videos from the early 1900s. Every guy even street sweepers and other men doing physical jobs are wearing a suit and tie and hat. Every woman is wearing a full length dress with gloves and a bonnet and an umbrella. Everybody looks formal but this was every day wear because at one time people got dressed up just to leave the house. Casual would have only been worn at home around your family. I think it would have been cool to live in those days.
@@_JimmyBeGoodI'm on my way to dress like that more often. But button down shirt, a sport jacket and hat are as casual as I dare leave the house, even if it's just for a trip to the grocery store. Half of the times I leave the tie at home.
Thanks, John, for the sport coat idea recently added to wardrobe, three colors, navy, tan and blue .. immediately sets off everything and better dressed right off the bat. Been tough to do during the heat waves, but for most of the year it's a winner.
I always felt that combining the outfit of the day was hard. Then I got myself jeans, chinos and belts in different colors. Suddenly it became much easier to combine an outfit to match the season, weather and activity. Having options and a wardrobe mostly in the neutral color palette that John often talks about has made it easy and fun to choose outfit.
Some of this comes down to trying. Just show you’ve given some thought to what you put on, and that you’re making an effort to present your best self. Great video as always!
After going self employed and working from home I have not worn a suit in 18 years (except one funeral) plus we moved to Southern Spain at the same time which is class less either by money or dress code. You can dress up or down for dinner no one cares, it is still strange see one table all smart and another group in shorts and flip flops. I tend to wear shorts and linen shirts in summer and jeans and t shirts / long sleeve tops in winter (rare to drop below 10c in the day) I do think my causel style is two fingers up (UK) one finger up (US) towards my corprate life of three peice suits, braces, pocket square, shirt and tie etc etc. In the 18 years of leaving the UK I think I have clean shaved about four times. I call my style Boho chic .................... well thats what my wife says. Great video and keep up the great work.
John, you can sell just about anything. I like that you emphasize classing up what one's personal style. you have been a huge, positive influence on my clothing choices. I always say to myself, "What would John say/think?" thank you!
I admire this gentleman having to say the same thing over and over again to men all year long. It's not that hard to dress for your age, and it's not that hard to find quality stuff that matches. When I started my journey to dress better, I started asking chicks to come shopping with me. They upped my game big time, and now I just know what works and what looks amazing anytime anywhere. Many women, especially those that just want to be your friend, will be more than happy to help. #lmao
HI John, I know a lot of guys like to shop on line; however, I think a good thing to do is go to a quality (higher end) men's store and get fitted (try on) with a few quality pieces to set a base. For me, I have tried to order on line and more often than not the fit is not good or it looks good on the model, but not on me. Take care!
Great advice. It's so iffy online. I've found good pieces and I've found horrible pieces. It's a game I like to call; "Lets see how this will fit". Sadly, online is typically my choice since there are no Quality Higher end men's stores near me. I would have to drive for over 2 hours to get to one...but whenever I am near one, I'm always stopping in.
So true! Fortunately I have a Nordstrom very close to my house. If they don’t have what I want in the store, I’ll order something on their website, have it delivered to the store, usually in several sizes or styles, then go down there and just try everything on in one trip. Their return policy is great so I can just return whatever I don’t keep
Good info that many men can benefit from, including me. Liked the tip on upgrading from t-shirts to a shirt with a collar like a polo and suede loafers.
I live in Chicago and work in the trades so I’m always wearing jeans, work boots and T-Shirts. I do like to dress up a bit when I’m not working, this video is very helpful! Thank you Sir!!!!!
This channel has been amazingly helpful in helping me "grow up" in a way, as someone who got a little too casual over the pandemic. I'm tossing a lot of old concert and sports tees and trying to focus on nice polos (at least for the summer... I'll have to figure out how to navigate a Canadian winter stylishly.) I think my main hurdle now is with shoes. As someone who has had multiple ankle and knee surgeries, I lean towards ugly comfort (like a HOKA shoe) over something stylish. I wore nice suede shoes to a wedding this summer and was in agony the whole day. Not sure where to go in my case there.
I’ve recently learned about the concept of formality mismatch, and that’s something to watch out for with something like this. A really formal looking sport jacket or blazer is not going to look great with a pair of ratty tennis shoes, but a casual sportcoat or unstructured blazer with a clean pair of white or brown leather sneakers Would look great
I recall from another fashion tips video you commented on men who give up and how it shows in the way they dress. I can't stop seeing that concept where I live in Montana. Casual is considered dressed up here: anything beyond that means some life event or court! But so many fashion faux pas here. Like anywhere, there are exceptions. I purchased a pair of canvas, lace up sneakers in muted olive tone recently and they look more casual and even relaxed. The color does go well with some of my combinations. I have to agree about the Hey Dude brand-way too "popular" here and I refuse to purchase them. Another is Hoka: for therapeutic reasons, I get it, but everyday? Again, no. Always great advice John. I think a regional style advice video might be good: New England, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and so on.
The regional influences a real factor. I’m up here in the Pacific Northwest and it’s basically flannels, slim jeans and unkempt facial hair. I don’t get it. I think if these guys actually tried dressing nicely they would love how it makes them feel
Know I’m “old” at 71 but think it started with Casual Friday years ago and it got out of hand which humans will do. Saw a kid going into 10th grade this year wearing T shirt and shorts. The teachers look the same. There is a reason military and law enforcement wear uniforms. People get lazy. Wife compliments all the time about how “put together “ she looks. The bar is not high but most people sinking to the lowest level as people do. I dress so my spouse can be proud to be seen with me too.
It depends on where you are. I know people who do casual Friday in a 2 part suit without a tie but with pocket square instead of their normal three piece suit with tie. That's their casual Friday idea. Indeed I don't dress in uniform suit because I work with children who have sever autism/ mental problems and aggression is something we face every day. A tie is an ankerpoint to grab on. Also getting nice clothing damaged isn't great. I do dress "nice" casual, chino and polo shirt or button down. But in private life I do dress better than that especially when going out for diner or somewhere else.
I will say, one situation where I think walking shoes or athletic shoes are appropriate as if you’re literally going to be walking around all day, such as taking the family to Disneyland. Trust me - in situations like that, function over form is probably the way to go lol. But even then, you don’t have to look like a slouch. You can wear a pair of casual chinos and a comfy polo, for example
While I agree about graphic Tshirts for the most part, there's nothing wrong with rocking a rock and roll shirt if under a nice black denim or leather jacket for a show or casual weekend trip out with your fine lady. Like anything especially when you get older, you've just got to know how to do it right! Great video
That’s right, especially if you’re going to a concert. I’ve been enjoying getting into more classic menswear lately, but I wouldn’t show up at a rock concert wearing a blazer and chinos lol. Maybe some guys would, and that’s fine
You pretty much nailed it John. Not 40 yet but I am slowly approaching it as I'm currently in my middle 30's so the videos are truly helpful. OCBDS, Long sleeve Linens, Basic Dress shirts, sweaters, slacks, and Chinos are all part of my wardrobe. I'm growing a little out of the jeans as I get older but I still keep 2 pairs around.
Jeans can be worn especially while doing chores. I'm not doing garbage cleaning with products in a nice chino or suit. I know I'm clumsy and will stain my clothing doing chores.
@@mgammeren Absolutely! I completely agree. My sport coats feature patch pockets therefore making them simple to wear with any pants including jeans. I also have a Plaid Suit Jacket which isn't too shiny so I don't think it's a big deal if I dress that down either.
@@mgammeren In the future I have to get other shoes though for my jeans since Cap Toes are considered too formal to be paired with them. Thanks for the response.
@@pensivepenguin3000 I already have the wardrobe of an older man despite being in my middle 30's but hey I outgrew most of what I wore during my school years so it's always nice to upgrade you know? Hope you're doing well sir.
Great stuff. I sell wine in a very upscale spirits store, and we do wear polo shirts for work. I just try to do the best with what I have to work with, but my clothes fit well, and I put a lot of time into grooming. Sadly, a lot of our customers can't say the same, most show up dressed like bums. We do get some sharp looking guys, mostly military or retired military I think.
Thanks for all the helpful videos, John. I've added some suspenders to my wardrobe lately. I really like wearing them with jeans + an oxford shirt or jeans + a knitted polo shirt. I find suspenders to be more comfortable and stylish than belts. It would be interesting if you could make a video about this someday.
These are all great tips and completely agree. I do however, have a hard time. I'm 55 and 305 lbs. I'm working hard to reduce, but in the meantime, I don't want to look like a schlub. It seems that all of the extra weight is in my stomach. So when I buy a 3x (to fit my stomach) it's too big everywhere else. When I buy a 2x, it's too small. I've found 2XB in stores like Kohls, and websites like DXL, and KIngSize, but choices are limited and so is style everything seems to be extra long, or they have cargo shorts and pleated pants etc. It gets frustrating. I checked Collars and Co and they only go up to a 2x as much as I like their stuff it won't fit, sadly. I wish that some of the men's channels on here would do some videos for larger guys...I know there's stuff out there, I just can't find it.
Way to keep it classy. I wouldn’t worry excessively about what other guys wear. Focusing too much on other guys style is kind of a feminine behavior. Just focus on you. Your confident presence in your dapper jacket says everything that needs to be said
This is so true. Many of these channels, like this, Gent Z, Gentlemen’s Gazette etc. talk about all this formalwear, which is great… But have you looked at guys over the last five years? Lol. People think hoodies and joggers are high fashion now. Going out there in a well fitted polo and a pair of dark wash jeans or chinos will already set you above 99% of the dudes out there
YES, finally. 🎉 T-shirt is pajama!! Only looks good on fit young guys. Men dressing like toddlers... 🤦♂️🤦♂️ (including myself not long ago, anyone can change 😎)
It’s true, but I admit I’m having a hell of a time quitting the T-shirt. I’m 45 years old and while I’m still mostly a tall, skinny guy, I do have a bit of the belly going on. T-shirts honestly fit me pretty well, but I always feel much better about myself when I go out in a polo or button-down, which is what I try to do more often. Working at home though, it’s just so easy to slip on whatever’s Comfy
The thing that limits my wardrobe is that nothing in big and tall sizes fit. Ordereing clothes on line is just a shot in the dark and most times don't fit. The clothes I have that fit are all custom made and they tend to be more formal. Anything off the rack has to be so extensivley tailored that it's easier to just have it made from scratch. Another subject is trying to find a tailor that will even pay attention.
John on of the reasons I do not like polos us that most of them are short sleeve. I am a fit guy but do not like exposed arms. Any ideas on long sleeved polls?
what's your opinion on wearing pants one length short. For example, I'm a natural 34/32, but I've been loving 34/30, because it doesn't crumple the bottom of the pant leg on the shoe. It also allows the pant to hug the calf, which is one of my better features (thanks to years of athletics). Now, I look for *casual* pants (khakis, chinos, jeans, etc) one length shorter.
What are the best shopping options for big and tall? Shoppimg is a miserable experience because nothing fits. Im 6'5", long torso, long arms, wide shoulders with some extra weight. Where can i find clothes that fit? Pants are hard to find, too.
I agree with a lot of this...but man...I love my sneakers though. I do want to start getting some fashion sneakers and loafers though. I just don't go anywhere "fancy" enough to wear them.
Society has gotten so excessively casual over the past five or so years that it’s hard not to feel self-conscious dressing nicely, nowadays. That’s my biggest hurdle - just building up that self-confidence to dress the way I want and not worry what others think
Over the years I've seen a number of guys rocking those tan timberland boots and other boots with a polo shirt and it didn't look bad. I guess it depends on the look you're going for.
While I'm wearing nicer shirts than just Tshirts, footwear is still a difficult thing. Fashionable shoes just will not be as supportive for my needs. Having a fused ankle and midfoot, I can barely walk on hard surfaces barefoot anymore, so more flat shoes just can't do it for me, no matter what insoles I try... Thanks though, I enjoy seeing what works for you.
Growing up, my mom wore flip-flops in the summer, and I only ever really recall women wearing them, so when I see a guy in them, it’s just weird to me. It seems inherently feminine
I try to follow the “style rules”, and dress my age, but I must admit, dressing was way more FUN, when I was a young man. In my opinion, following the “rules” doesn’t leave much room to stand out…but I follow them anyway.
Once you nail the rules, you can find subtle ways to stand out. And just like someone else mentioned, just dressing. halfway decent is enough to stand out these days.
I'm 32 but look like 25, and hit the gym. I'm Asian, grew my hair long and I'm the rock 'n' roll type. With that said, you can never catch me wearing a pair of white sneaker. The only sneaker you can catch me wearing are high-top monochrome black Chuck Taylor's and nothing else. The rest of my shoe collection are boots. I'm just saying, if you really want that edgy look, as long as your personality is congruent to it, don't wear white sneakers. It signals normality, and shoes will always be the base of your fashion.
I have a problem: as I get older I want to wear T-Shirts, Converse sneakers and stuff from American Eagle for example. I don't want to wear "old man clothing". Yes a polo shirt is nice sometimes, especially if you want to dress up. I don't like the idea of clothes "not anymore for your age".
At home, fine. Also it was pretty populair among hospital personal here in Europe. I had a pair of boat shoes from them. They where amazing and easy drying and used them on my small sailboat.
I wish people would pay attention to what they wear. Have you been to an airport or a Walmart lately? People go out dressed in their pajamas or at best like they are going to a backyard BBQ! Most don't even bathe regularly! They put on clothes they get out of the hamper. You live in California and are from Seattle so maybe those in your circle dress a little better there. Go the to Midwest, Texas, Arizona, Utah, Montana or the south and take in the fashion there!
When I was younger, most of the guys who wore polo shirts were the preppy kids who did that pin wheel ankle roll with their pants and a sweater tied over the shoulders, or their polo shirt was tucked into their shorts. Now whenever I see a man in a polo shirt I just know he either plays golf, has played golf, or is getting back into golf.
I’m guessing maybe you went to high school in the 90s like me? I understand those negative associations, but I’ve let go of those. Fortunately, we aren’t in high school anymore, and times have changed. The polo is a classic piece and it’s all about how you style it
@@pensivepenguin3000 First off, I graduated in 1990 so I was out of high school in the 90s. Secondly, I never said don't wear polo shirts or that other people shouldn't wear them. James Dean, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and many other famous men have worn polo shirts throughout the years. I never said that I don't wear polo shirts from time to time. I do wear them. I simply said that when I was younger that's how these kids wore them and as an adult now, most people I see wear them are into golf. There is nothing wrong with someone wearing a polo shirt. But I will add one thing to what I previously said before. To me, a polo shirt is nothing more than a Henley t-shirt with a collar.
@@Joey21071 oh yeah, for sure. I wasn’t being argumentative, just relating with once having that same perception of polos but explaining how my opinion has changed
Gym shorts and T-shirt and ball cap are not cool in a mid scale to upscale restaurant. $30-100 plate . Crocs!!!! I find them repulsive. I don’t dress up if I’m running errands but I dress decent if I’m going to church, restaurant, casual party
I've been watching your videos for a while. I generally agree with you on most things, though I do tend towards more classically stylish looks. This video however was very generic and just seemed to be a way to get your sponsor money
When I was a child I dressed like Opy in the Andy Griffith Show. When I was about 40 I looked in the mirror and saw that I dressed much the same; a T-shirt, blue jeans, and sneakers. I started to dress like an adult by first wearing my father's hand-me-downs. I began getting compliments. I do want to see more videos on this subject. I want to know things like, Are polyester golf shirts acceptable as casual wear, or should they be limited to the golf course? Are man-made fabrics okay or should I stay with natural fabrics? Do tennis shoes look good on men over 60? Keep them coming the advice is welcome.
I live in Western Australia, so it's too hot to wear a jacket 6 months of the year. Blokes here are generally terrible at dressing themselves, with board shorts and scruffy t shirts with flip flops the uniform of many (often barefoot, even in places like supermarkets). My girlfriend of 8 years assumed I was gay when she met me, simply because I was dressed in a polo shirt, cream chinos, and loafers. That's how low the dress sense 'bar' is here. My cooler weather uniform tends to be dark wash jeans or chinos, Chelsea boots or Adidas Originals (usually Gazelles or Spezials), a plain shirt (no patterns) or polo shirt, and a lightweight jacket. In hot weather I wear a lot of linen blends, and yes my iron gets used a LOT. I know you said the t shirt is low on the totem, but a slim fitting plain black t shirt is one of the coolest and most flattering items you can wear.

@@pensivepenguin3000 I already have the wardrobe of an older man despite being in my middle 30's but hey I outgrew most of what I wore during my school years so it's always nice to upgrade you know? Hope you're doing well sir.
John, after watching your videos for a while now, I am stylish and casual!
Yes! Thanks for watching!
Thank you sir.
Most welcome!
A thoughtful piece. Well done.
Thank you!
Your videos have helped my husband find his style and he is loving the compliments he receives. Can you link the suede loafers, please?
Thanks for the reminder! I just added links to the video description box. Thank you!
Maybe take one of those items that fits you well around the waist and get it tailored so it fits better elsewhere
Feel naked without a sports jacket. Live in a metropolitan city.
Dude wore a t-shirt and jeans to a quality jazz lounge the other day. Ugh.
Way to keep it classy. I wouldn’t worry excessively about what other guys wear. Focusing too much on other guys style is kind of a feminine behavior. Just focus on you. Your confident presence in your dapper jacket says everything that needs to be said
Can't disagree with anything you said John! Thank you
You’re welcome!
Just wearing a good polo shirt jeans and good shoes can elevate you against the mass of men wearing ill fitting mismatched clothes
True!
and they look like overgrown kids!
This is so true. Many of these channels, like this, Gent Z, Gentlemen’s Gazette etc. talk about all this formalwear, which is great… But have you looked at guys over the last five years? Lol. People think hoodies and joggers are high fashion now. Going out there in a well fitted polo and a pair of dark wash jeans or chinos will already set you above 99% of the dudes out there
@3:12 a Johnny collar is a new one on me. Made me laugh..... as often called Jonny
YES, finally. 🎉 T-shirt is pajama!!
Only looks good on fit young guys. Men dressing like toddlers... 🤦♂️🤦♂️ (including myself not long ago, anyone can change 😎)
I disagree: t-shirts are underwear, not pyjamas!
Would like to see some low cost (under $100) options for loafers for guys like me that don't have a large clothing budget.
Great piece
The thing that limits my wardrobe is that nothing in big and tall sizes fit. Ordereing clothes on line is just a shot in the dark and most times don't fit. The clothes I have that fit are all custom made and they tend to be more formal. Anything off the rack has to be so extensivley tailored that it's easier to just have it made from scratch. Another subject is trying to find a tailor that will even pay attention.
John on of the reasons I do not like polos us that most of them are short sleeve. I am a fit guy but do not like exposed arms. Any ideas on long sleeved polls?
If you’re based in the US, as fall gets closer, you’ll start to see a lot of long sleeve polos in stores.
Yeah you can even wear a base colour longe sleeve polo with a sports jacket/blazer on a chino.
what's your opinion on wearing pants one length short.
Yeah, absolutely agree! As long as it isn’t super short, I’m for it!
On Jeans. If they're too long, you don't really have to get them shortened. IMO cuffing them is perfectly appropriate for high quality jeans.
I'm 43. I love hey dudes. I didn't give up on myself.
What are the best shopping options for big and tall? Shoppimg is a miserable experience because nothing fits. Im 6'5", long torso, long arms, wide shoulders with some extra weight. Where can i find clothes that fit? Pants are hard to find, too.
I think it is ok to wear flip flops and the similar during certain instances outside of the pool / beach.
Yeah at the beach or at the pool it's ok. Although if you go swimming in the sea that has some rocks I would opt for dedicated wet shoes.
I agree with a lot of this...but man...I love my sneakers though. I do want to start getting some fashion sneakers and loafers though. I just don't go anywhere "fancy" enough to wear them.
Just remember, they’re still just sneakers. Wear them to the same places you would wear your other sneakers. :)
Just loafers and boots
Leaving the comfort zone is the hardest part. The rest is just takes a bit of practice.
Well said!
Society has gotten so excessively casual over the past five or so years that it’s hard not to feel self-conscious dressing nicely, nowadays. That’s my biggest hurdle - just building up that self-confidence to dress the way I want and not worry what others think
Great photo. I am one for the KISS system #Legend
Thanks Gregg!
I live in boots of one sort or another, seven days a week. Can i pair a polo with boots or is that going to look off?
I suppose it depends on the boots. If it’s a rough work boot, probably not. If it’s a little bit nicer, absolutely.
Over the years I've seen a number of guys rocking those tan timberland boots and other boots with a polo shirt and it didn't look bad. I guess it depends on the look you're going for.
I wear a lot of tee shirts where i live in Bangkok. Pergect for the weather there. Im still in shaoe at 67 . I wear Paul Smith tee shirts.
Loafers with rubber soles
Thank you for calling out flip flops. If you’re by the pool, fine. Anywhere else. No.
By following those rules you already stand out today (unfortunately)
But they give you plenty of room to combine things, and play with colours.
Once you nail the rules, you can find subtle ways to stand out. And just like someone else mentioned, just dressing. halfway decent is enough to stand out these days.
@@40OverFashion Thanks, I’ve learned a lot from this channel!
@@PotsdamSenior Thanks!
I you know the rules you can also do something different and have fun with it.
Are leather jackets, like a racer jacket still ok for a guy who’s 42?
Absolutely! I would suggest something in a matte finish, or suede over something that’s shiny.
I think you can look good in a T-shirt. It's just a more casual look. The henley is actually a very nice look
And Hey Dudes go great with Linen pants in the summer
T-shirts are for kids
@@cms3000 Then call me a kid, because I wear 'em and look damned good in them.
@@BrianLannoye kid
Living in Bangkok , most guys wear sandals and shorts.
You look like Will Ferrell 😂
Your recommendation on Crocs?
Not a fan.
At home, fine. Also it was pretty populair among hospital personal here in Europe. I had a pair of boat shoes from them. They where amazing and easy drying and used them on my small sailboat.
John, don't you think a solid T-shirt can look good under a nice unzipped bomber or leather jacket?
Sure, if that’s the style you’re going for. But on its own, I’m still not a big fan of T-shirts as a “going out” shirt.
Seattle ? Lmao
@@noName-kn1lx I said he was from Seattle. I didn't say it was a fashion mecca! I guess people dress like slobs there too! LOL
Tee shirts are for the gym!!! Collars and buttons are the go to choice for any stylish man!
Agreed!
No tee shirts can be worn anywhere . I'm not going to wear my designer t- shirts down at the gym.
Those C&C polo's are nice but they're out in my size...try again later
When I was younger, most of the guys who wore polo shirts were the preppy kids who did that pin wheel ankle roll with their pants and a sweater tied over the shoulders, or their polo shirt was tucked into their shorts. Now whenever I see a man in a polo shirt I just know he either plays golf, has played golf, or is getting back into golf.
Haha!
The old guys who tuck t-shirts into shorts and worn with a belt. Why ?
I don't like polo shirts. I Don't buy them or have them in my wardrobe. I'll pass on the polo shirts.
I have to dress like a worker - not a dandy.
Wear what you like.
Great suggestions! Thank you!

That shirt is $100 by the way
Ease up on the word super.
I think that's a Cali thing. Just saying.
Super good feedback. Super appreciated. :)

Thank you! Appreciate the feedback. I’ll do something soon!
No socks is really anti hygienic.
You're too preppy to my style.
No graphics tees (cartoon characters etc) Spider-Man is the dude, but only 10 year olds will compliment your shirt....
thats a cheap sears polo, nothing screams broke more than this.........
A tshirt, tank top, wife beater, old worn out sports jersey... just to name a few
