- In this video, I look at the auxiliary electrical heating element fitted to most Freelander 2s.
I hope to continue the investigation in part 2, coming soon.
Now I understand how it works ! Thank you. Good logical approach leaves the PTC not quite so mysterious 😀
Very informative video. I have been using PROG all these years. No wonder it never worked.Thank you.
Great diagnostic skills.
Great video ! I always wondered how the blowers had warm air so fast never knew there was an electric heater on the car! The Auto function is the best mode, not sure if I missed it but the windscreen heating also enables automatically when in auto👍🏻
Heated windscreen turns on with Prog, but this turns the PTC off to reduce current drain. This is where I was going wrong all these years!
Thank you so much for this! I've wondered for years if my PTC heater was working or not. Like you l always switch on the heated screen when its cold. Doh!
Thanks! Glad I’m not the only one!
I live in Cyprus and often in the shoulder seasons I have the heating set to cold but still warm air comes through the vents. The outside temp is much cooler than this air but certainly more than say 15 degs. But the sunshine will warm the cabin through the windows enough to make it feel. tad uncomfortable but not enough for the Aircon to be needed. I just can't understand how the air from the vents can be warmer than outside unless the thermostat has gone in the Heating Temp Control.....or ...... now I'm wondering if this PTC thingy is faulty and is warming the air? The Temperature here rarely goes below 7 degrees at night and only then during February. Though happily not this year! I'll have to investigate. I may as well take the fuse out for the PTC......!!
Very very helpful. Good job.
Yay been waiting all week for this one 🙌🙌🙌....smash that like button
Thank you that's what i was looking for for battery drain problem.on ford transit custom
Are you concerned about the difference in Amp drawn between the two? With what appears to be two separate elements? The 1/2 draw from the installed one could mean one side isn’t working any more? Only small wattage but 120w vs ~240w is a fair difference
You may be right...I’m not sure if the heater has two halves or not. The 20A test was performed the next day when it was even colder, so maybe it was just heating more. I’ll do some more tests in Part 2 and swap out the element if it looks half blown.
If you have the Gap II tool or maybe other code readers, you can read the live values for the heater. It switches on automatically, external temp 3 degrees C and rapidly reaches a temperature of just under under 69.8 degrees C. and is indeed cut off if the heated front seats or the heated front window is on. It is not dependant on Prog
Thanks Mike. I think mine still worked with the seats, but not the heated screen. I’ll revisit the PTC in another video soon.
Workshop manual discusses the need for the higher rated 115/180 amp for those vehicles with heated windscreen and electronic heating booster
“NOTE: Vehicles fitted with an electric booster heater and heated windshield will also be fitted with an uprated 180 amp generator.” This isn’t in line with your findings that it’s one or the other, as I read that if the alternator is correctly spec’d, they should both run fine? Do you have the correct spec alternator?
It is the alternator which came with the car when I bought it, so it should be the correct rating. Next time I’m in the engine bay I’ll try to rear any markings/labels.
In part 2 I will attempt to override the PTC control so it works with the heated screen on too.
This PTC heater caused me so much headache on my LR2. My battery kept draining flat overnight. Eventually my auto electrician discovered my PTC heater was faulty and isolated it.
Hi!The PTC heater gives an error B10EA-14, what is the reason, I do not understand. Can you tell me?
Hi!Have you not made the installation of the PTC heater controllable? It's very interesting how it will look!
Great Video - I learned a lot and liked you way of working things out. Simon @ PowerfulUK
Thanks Simon! I’ll be filming another video on the PTC soon.
I have a similar PTC heater from FoMoCo. My issue is that interior and exterior lights, displays etc are flickering when PTC are on. I know it's a guessing game but what might cause that? Bad/weak battery or/and alternator? Bad PTC? Bad CEM/CCM? No flickering otherwise as far as i know as long as PTC are off and I'm idling with engine normal temperature. PTC makes warm air. So it seems to work. Engages under 10 degrees Celsius. Please help.
your videos make me feel that the anger I direct at inanimate mechanical and electrical objects may be misguided.
Hello!Have you made the PTC heater fitted manageable?
No, sorry, not yet. I do plan to do a Part 2 for this video, but not got round to it yet.
Hi!Have you not made the installation of the PTC heater controllable? It's very interesting how it will look!
Hello,i want to ask you why in summer with out side temp.30 degree still heather is working, only in auto heather is not working.Problems are sensors or something else, thank you for great video
Check the internal temperature sensor (small vent near key)
@@BeavisPits i disconnect ptc heater and i drive the car and still there is hot probably is caming cot from heater core under ptc.I investigate heater core and i find that the h.core is all the time supplied trom water pump with coolant. The problem is maybe with some flaps ?
@@kirekapsa yes the heater temperature is controlled by air flaps not water flow. The element is always hot, but air may not flow through it to the vents.
All LR2 are equipped with this kind of preheater ?
I’m not sure. It may only be diesels (as they take longer to warm up), and may only be vehicles sold in colder regions.
well done that man
Another great video. I did notice that you are on auto heating. I wonder if that makes a difference? Maybe a test for your second video.
Thanks, I don’t think auto made a difference, but I will check that. Auto does the fan and direction only. I have checked it with manual controlled direction and fan and it seemed to still heat, but I have also heard that there is a minimum air flow required before the element turns on. I’ll do some more tests!
@@BeavisPits I tried mine last night, it was 6c so wasn't expecting much but actually within about 20 seconds there was warm air. Really interesting stuff, I'll be interested to see the next video recording temperatures. You could probably use an arduino to feed the PWM so you could adjust the temperature yourself depending on the voltage of the PWM of course. I wonder if the ECUs detect that the PTC is disconnected though?
I have a 2007 F2 do I have this??
Probably. Check to see if the fuse is present. You can also remove the console side panel and look for the plugs on the end of the PTC element.
Hello! Could you help me? I have lr2 2007, without PTC, I installed it and now I need to flash the HVAC unit to activate it. The HVAC unit is absolutely the same as yours. Could you look at the firmware version on your block? H/W 6H52-14C239-EB
Is the number written on the PTC heater element? I don’t have my PTC here at the moment, it is in my storage unit, but I can get you the number when I’m next down there.
@@BeavisPits No :) I mean, if you have a diacnostic of sdd types or another. Please read the firmware numbers of your climate control unit. (HVAC) H/W ver 6H52-14C239-EB but I do not know the SW version.
I’m not sure if my Autel AP200 will read this information. I will have a look next time I plug it in.
@@BeavisPits Thanks.
I’ve only had my Fl2 for 10 years and didn’t even know it had an electric heater. Great video. Nice investigative work. Your FL fan base is growing!
By the way. I didn’t spot your snorkel. Did you take it off or what fitting that afterwards. Or did I miss it.
The snorkel isn’t fitted yet. Had to put that project on hold for a year. Will resume the development in a few months.
Did you figure this one out?
Do you think low battery power could cause a fault code?
👍👍
Great info in your vids
Great video my PTC also has not apperently working due to fault code I have seen. When swithing the fan to full it pushed water out above the PTC. So I figured this was clear water not coolant, From your other video on drainage pipe for aircon blocked , I realised that this water is being stirred up in the ducts, next to fan , is this possible. I will ceck th tube as per video.
Does sound like aircon condensation water is not draining and building up inside the heater
@@BeavisPits Checked aircon leakage under test , water leaking underneath to ground as normal, so yes draining properly, may take off dash gear to see if any other leakage appears. Holes in scuttle now clear, thanks to your video.
Help Please
What’s up?
@@BeavisPits How would I contact you, connected the hair dryer activated but it is in error and do not know what to do, do you have an email that would write to you
The PTC element has permanent 12V connected and is then controlled by a pulse width modulated signal wire. If this is connected to 12V the heater element will turn fully on. Everything I know about this is shown in the video. If you need further help then please ask on one of the facebook groups or freel2.com
@@BeavisPits I got it. It's just that I did everything and plus and minus and chip and activation and there is a bug b10ea-14, so I do not understand that neither
