  • Secondary clarifiers are settling tanks in wastewater treatment plant, used for continuous removal of the mixed liquor TSS from the treated effluent and for the thickening of the settled activated sludge.
The removal of suspended solids material from wastewater by gravity separation is one of the most widely used physical unit processes in wastewater treatment.
There are several methods of analysis to determine the clarifier sizing, such as “flux analysis” or “state point analysis”. These 1-dimensional methods although very useful, are based on many assumptions, and do not consider real geometry of the basins.
With the use of unsteady multiphase CFD simulation, a much accurate analysis is possible. This technology opens completely new possibilities for the optimization of such reactors, and it also allows the study of such basins in real time taking into account fluctuating parameters such as: inflow rate, solids loading rate, recirculation rate, etc.

which CFD packages you used to simulate?

This simulation is calculated with STAR-CCM+. The modeling is based on a Euler multiphase approach and sliding mesh for the rotation.
