A friend of mine who has PhD in economics stated that India has huge untapped potential still. She stated that 3-4states in India can alone be trillion dollar economics, but need huge reforms in infra, labor and land laws. I hope we see it near future.

Ambassador Vohra. Your description of post independence India brought tears of anger and frustration to my eyes. I was a child in early 1950’s and food sometimes was simply not available even when we had money. I remember the sorrow and despair in my mother’s eyes who was not sure how she would feed her children. And this was in Punjab. In 1960’s my salary of a university lecturer would run out at the end of three weeks. I left for the USA and am still here. I have been out of India for a long time but India is entrenched in my heart more than ever.
Thank you so much for a passionate recollection of the times. I join you in paying that Bharat see the glory it deserves.

This makes me happy, but we shouldn't be ecstatic. We have barely scratched the surface when it comes to making a serious dent. We have Japanese Govt pissed at our pace of work. The bullet train corridor was supposed to be completed within 2024, but it has been pushed back to 2028. Land acquisition is still a major problem for us at a national level, and it is happening due to our lack of unified political power. While Gujarat has already cleared 99 percent of land, Maharashtra govt lags at 44 percent.
Not trying to be political, but have Maharashtra Govt become so blind that in order to rival central govt they are stopping the developmental work that is not only affecting this bullet train project but also affecting India's foreign relationship? Japan has now warned India to not invest any further in order to boost its development. This is why we are still failing to bring larger degree of Heavy industrialization, cz we are so busy to dig our own graves. Wake up Indians!

We all used to come and give money to those beggers, with as much exchange, as we can, return with zip in our pants. Get tears, wonder, when this poverty, be over.....
Most money don't even get to projects. Now, India is one of the Lenders (through IMF) to the world. Indians should be proud of this achievement..With leaders like MMS, ABK, PM Modi, this has improved.....Kudos......

License raj killed all the life from entrepreneurs and socialist policies made sure that we couldn't grow fast. Adding to this bad treatment from the so called super power like US and UK from that time . To be honest UK still looks down upon India. Only way out is to be self reliant and make your economy strong just like china. The west is rattled due to the enormous growth of China ad they are doing everything they can to stop that. This could be our own fate when we become competitors to them in the near future .

Certainly this present situation gives a feeling of Euphoria to Indians. But that is too premature.
Yet there are other thngs to do before India aspires to "world leadership". The only way India can achieve it is by getting respect from all countries. That respect comes when India improves the condition of her own citizens, raising the GDP pe capita & improving their standard of life on par with the rest in the world. Next is to turn India to world's workshop, producing industrial products atht are received with confidence in any country.

There could be something of a trade off to get India a permanent UN seat. Maybe India and Japan get permanent seats... as do Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey... that way more BRIC members are on the security counsel and US and China blocs are satisfied.
