You know what makes this song great? The fact of having the band very open to share their tracks and ideas instead of blocking their own material.
My dude really trying to get himself some Beato
I don't know if you're being sarcastic or what but the band actually blocked all the free tabs from online so people would buy their tab book. I kinda get their approach but then on the hand, I don't since free tabs have been a thing ever since internet was invented.
facts
@@IncredibleGoliath seriously. couple bucks to learn it the right way the first time is totally worth it compared to going thru the unlearning and relearning process.
@@delcogoonquad yeah that’s not sharing, that’s selling:) I don’t have a problem with selling, but just let not use false labels...
The fact that rick explained to us what flexing is, is just hilarious.
Lol Like your grandpa dabbing after winning bingo night
I came for the music and stayed for the pop culture lessons
i scrolled down immediately to see this comment
it was a meta flex, he was actually flexing that he can explain anything and we'll enjoy it
Tbf my dad watches these and he definitely would've been confused if Rick didn't explain it.
Seeing an older guy embrace the music of the next generation instead of griping about the “good old days” is wholesome to the max
Maybe you should watch his other videos. Polyphia is the rare gem among music today.
Don't watch his other videos then lol I like him well enough. But he does seem to pretty much do that a lot. Its really hard to believe he is not being facetious when he says some bands are great. He's clearly knowledgeable but he's also signed to Sony and thinks U2 is an amazing band.
Hard to deny new music when they can play like that
@@magnificentuniverse2283 Same, love his videos but he definitely is biased to older music, like if you watch his top 10s and top 20s it's almost exclusively songs from the 60s/70s/80s. Don't blame him though, I'm the same with music from the 90s/00s just happens as you get older I think.
This is why he’s the goat!
I just appreciate that this band is making rock music that feels current, interesting, and unique. Even if it's not to your taste, any fan of rock music should appreciate great players making original and unique rock music.
They take elements I enjoy from different genres of music and put it all into one piece. Dudes not only a talented guitarist, but a talented songwriter writer and composer as well. Dude will be a modern guitar legend when it’s all said and done. Extremely unique and progressive. Imagine his skill level 20 years from now (along with the rest of the band). The drummer is insane as well.
Original? They just make abused music that was already bad and not original in the first place
@@diegoandreuccioli7992 and why are you commenting this video? Only great talents bring this kind of haters
@@Luismayer77 why i am commenting on things? Because i want and i can. Can you stick to the topic please?
@@diegoandreuccioli7992 jajaj and what the hell do you do thats original? i have seen your unoriginal comment from so many others.
Its good ettiquete to save your subjective negative opinion unless you have a constructive comment to go along with it. Your comment has nothing constructive other than shitting on an artist production.
so yeah, duck you! have a good day!
I want a remaster of G.O.A.T with Rick going wooo throughout the song
"G.O.A.T. featuring the impeccable timing of Rick Beato"
lmao i was thinking the same thing then scrolled down and read this im dyin
Woooo!
From Beato to Flair in a single song.
Make it happen
This is how a 65 year old guitar player living in SW France "discovers" a band and immediately buys an album. Merci beaucoup Rick.
pretty cool, huh?

Hopefully you've already discovered French modern prog gods Lazuli.
@@Leaddevo Oui. First time I've seen/heard prog rock played on a Gretsch Round-Up! Loved it. (I saw PFM, Gentle Giant, Genesis (Peter Gabriel era) back in the day...)
Vive le sud ouest!
The music isn't just the notes, it's the spaces... this song is such a prime example of that
You mean the silence parts but yes
@@asant90 I mean the intentional use of space. Rests, if you want to get more technical in musical terminology 🙄 IDK why people have to be so argumentative and nitpicky online. But I said what I meant. Victor Wooten wrote about it in his book The Music Lesson, and it's a great yet fairly underutilized musical tool.
nah space was the right way to put it, because space specifically exists to contrast something taking up that space
@@lt3880 Exactly 💯
Also, space is used where Rick refers to implied chords. The riffs don't cover the entire arpeggio, just enough to give harmonic direction.
Such a rich collection of sound!
Drummer: "have you left enough room for my part?"
The others:"it's gonna be tight..."
Drummer: "excellent"
Vocalist: "what about me?"
Polyphia: "You're too late"
Hehehe
That was funny dude ;)
Rick: explains the chord progression
Me, with nearly zero music theory knowledge: yeah totally
"Bruh, yeah. Exactly" - me not knowing anything
Before I took music theory I was in the same boat. Its so weird to watch these knowing things now
my analysis: "aha! the chord movement is minor - major - major, but then the last bar is sharp in the bass"
Rick's analysis: "Bbm6, D/G, F# Phrygian phrasing, etc. etc."
me: "Yeah, that's what I said!........ right? IT IS THE SAME THING, RIGHT?!"
Same💀
@@manikay 🤣
The whole song is just a giant flex, and it's not just one musician flexing - they're flexing every instrument, they're flexing the arrangements and they're flexing the style. It's quite a masterful novelty.
Even the song name is the ultimate flex
I think it's horrible...I bought this...the NEXT BIG THING...that nasal tone and spastic showing off.

If Beato woooos then I have to give it a chance. I've seen Pat Metheny twice, so Beato is the man.

@@adrianrodrigues1402 I see what you did there. LOL

Most I've heard in one Beato video. And an "Ohhh!" thrown in toward the end as the cherry on top!
Polyphia is one of the few bands that switched to another genre after starting off metal and I didn't get mad. Everything they write is A1!
Hell yeah. I am late to the Polyphia party, I found Tim Henson in Jared Dines' shred compilation III and then went in and devoured what I could find. That run of Davie504 into Tim into Ichika Nito and then Tobin Abasi, I think? So much talent and uniqueness in one small section of a video.
I feel that way about Opeth. I like it all :)
for real their early stuff was extremely boring cookie cutter bs
To be fully honest with you, I disliked their first EP after the change quite a lot, but they released very nice stuff after a while starting from "The Most Hated" and beyond. They matured it and it became very nice.
His Jared Dines riff is one of my favorite
As a bassist, slaping + picking is probably the most unique and powerfull way anyone would play these fast fills, it is basically what gives it it's deep and profond agressive tone, plus the low B string used a lot, it is just insane.
Rick: How long does it take?
Me: *Probably takes a few hours over a few days to finish the composition and then polishing it over the course of a few days*
Tim: It takes like an hour to finish the composition and then like another hour to learn and perfect playing it.
Me: *Gives up playing guitar*
Right? No way it takes an hour. They'd have millions of songs
I think he was talking about perfecting the riff with "flexes"
@@ForrestWhaling As an amateur composer, it really doesn't take too long to write an entire song, even technical prog stuff. Once you have the main idea/ riff/ chord progression it's just building from there. It sounds ridiculous but it's true. Obviously only taking a couple hours is still crazy, but yeah, somewhere around 5-10 hours isn't abnormal.
Well Picasso practiced for decades so he can create a 1hr masterpiece
@@andrewkorpesho This is very true.. especially if you already have a melody that's been playing in your head for days..
how INSANE would it be for Polyphia to do this song with an orchestra.
That would really be missing the point. A quartet maybe.
@@distortingjack sure I guess. I just think it could be super creative.

I'm Rick's age, and first time I'm hearing of Polyphia. Very impressive musicians. Will be checking out more of their stuff. Thanks, Rick!
saucy is one of the most infectious riffs ever
Welcome to the club. Glad to have you aboard, have a good time with polyphia stuff it's amazing.
All of their material is top tier, but they really kicked it up a notch when they changed drummers after their first album. My favorite is The Most Hated EP, the compositions are a bit softer than New Levels New Devils, but still technical and melodic with an incredibly full sound... it's remarkable. Welcome to the party.
@@blehm_7403 hell yeah it is!
Same.
Thanks, Rick!
I got to meet these dudes back when they were touring their self titled, and hadn't started playing big shows yet. They ate some of my snacks and were stoked that I had pizza Combos 😂 super super chill, down to earth dudes who were just barely older than me and playing guitar about the same amount of time that I had. Unreal how much more skilled they are though 😂 they gave me some great pointers too, especially Scotty.
I feel like Rick is somehow able to hear and explain music in all its complexities with greater detail and inspiration than a painter that could recount every stroke of their brush that created a masterpiece. It's incredible that Rick cannot only hear and understand, but also breakdown the music into an appreciable medium for the masses. You didn't have to do this.... but you did. Thank you Rick.
I like how Rick breaks down “ flex” for us old guys lol thanks Rick!
What I find amazing is that this band has so much talent at every instrument, and they have the restraint to leave air throughout their tracks. The maturity in the composition can't be overstated.
Maturity? I got the total opposite impression
@@raynman6466 why do you feel that way? I agree with Benny, I also think the composition is masterfully done.
They’ve grown a lot as a band.
Their earlier stuff is way busier and shreddy. With their new stuff they’ve definitely prioritized the song over just flexing the entire time.
I’ve felt the same way since they released Renaissance. People look at their marketing or image and don’t use their ears. These guys have changed the game and their influence is already noticeable. Breaking out of boxes
Not too many people realize that the rests are just as important as the notes!

It's totally doable for him. Don't get me wrong, it's a hard riff but as far as Tim's riffs go GOAT intro is pretty doable (arguably not even the toughest riff in the song haha)
@@diceandcards8272 yes
This is my introduction to this band. I'm kind of a prog rocker. Just.. WOW. Absolutely LOVE this. Everything about it.
Reminds me of all the dropped jaws in the early 70s watching KC. Whole lotta How does he do that??
I was very hesitant when I first came across this band, thinking they're just another soulless super-shredders... but it's starting to grow on me, I think they're genius
"Soulless Super-Shredders" xD
I'm borrowing that word. Gonna call all attention-seeking shredders only showing off and not true to music "Soulless Super-Shredders" from now on.
I didn’t like them at first, but now they are my all-time favorite band. There music just stuck with me. I think the most hated album was a good gateway into their music.
Felt the same way. I was like "Wow theyre incredible but idk if I can listen to a bunch of guys flipping through their catalog of shredology like OG DreamTheatre". Then UA-cam brought Playing God back onto my feed, I gave it another listen and I was hooked.
The space the drums and bass leave for those clean guitar tones is just sooooo satisfying.
And viceversa: the space that guitars leave for those drum and bass is perfect.
One of the greatest lessons I ever learned (and am still learning) is _restraint!_ Sometimes the best note for the moment is a REST!
As you say, this song's exploration of space...specifically _making_ room for each other to shine...is just brilliant!!!
@@OmniphonProductions yea rests and space are what make each note mean something. Knowing when to stop wankery is the best skill any musician can learn.

I recommend listening their album new levels new devils. And also each album they released could be a genre of its own, so if you can listen to them aswell :)
Check out a track called "James Franco", it's low-key brilliant with an unreal solo.
@@ctrlaltdylan I've always liked that one the most. I know it's old polyphia now they have this clean shred thing but it's such a groove.
@Peta peTa you should add why its the best tho. for me, Every album is the best because they are very different to each other.
Crazy seeing the difference in how Rickreacts to this compared to the modern top 10 songs. It's like he's hearing Audioslave or Led Zepplin again for the first time. You can just tell Polyphia blows his freaking mind and it has to be almost impossible to blow this man's mind.
Polyphia and Covet are bands which play the music I didn't know I needed.

They're so different from the rest of the "Hype bullshit" young musicians. The depth of talent and total lack of ego in these guys despite their age blows my mind...
Never heard or seen this guy before, but wow was I blown away with the way he breaks down this bands sound. He really knows what he is talking about from a true knowledge and history based platform. Just incredible. I will admit, from first glance I was skeptical on his knowledge of this new era sound with stuff like trap and effects made with a computer. However it just shows that all this new stuff stems from an already deep rooted rich history. Great stuff here!
Great comment from you. He has over 20-years-plus music production experience, and with that maturity and love of music he knows how to explain and break down how the music is built up from every section and instrument.

And again, what gets me so much in this song, as so often with great music, is the use of contrasts: contrasts between space in the music and it being chockers full, contrasts between sounds which remind me of nature (water drops falling into a pond, bamboo flutes) and sounds at other times that are so futuristic and distorted, the higher pitched ‘acoustic’ guitar sounds contrasted with these heavy, dark bass and drums…, mindblowing contrasts everywhere.

Rick your intelligent descriptions of certain parts in all the songs you review are so entertaining and your accurate explanations of what is going on musically is friggin’ awesome. Their are so many chord inversions and ultra fast riffs that it takes many many listens to catch them all. Your “soloing “ of individual parts makes it easier to hear what these talented musicians are playing. In a world where playing instruments Live is being replaced by pre -recorded tracks, which infuriates me, It is a pleasure to hear true musicians playing their instruments along with your narration and brilliant assessment of songs you choose to review is absolutely appreciated by me and my circle of musician friends. I find the most impressive thing about this video is the fact that you have the actual stems. I would kill to have them to freely explore like what you've done. Being able to hear different isolated parts of the song is super cool to me, personally. Picking up on all those little nuances that you might not otherwise hear in the full mix is just awesome. Tim is almost otherworldly, must be how people felt when watching/meeting a Beethoven/Bach during their life. He almost challenges me to keep up (fat fingered chance here LOL) instead of giving up. I rank him up there with John 5 for pure joy when watching, they both just enjoy music and it shows. Been playing almost 40 years (51 now, cut my teeth on hair metal/classic rock) and I will never be that good, but it doesn't hurt at all. May the band survive the fame train.
HOLY CRAP!!! Where have I been on this band?! The future of guitar playing is here. SO much to unpack. Just DAMN!! Thank you for turning me on to this Rick! I'm completely inspired.
I feel you. I started seeing that Steve Vai feature with P. and I could not believe it!!
I'm actually excited about some new music!
G.O.A.T. Blew me away the first time I heard it. Polyphia is my favorite progressive rock band.
i honestly dislike everything they've done, the only thing i like about it is the drums. Its just "show-off" music, which is just unintereating to me, because it feels like it says nothing interesting.
@@sonovabeach2165 why are you watching this then? Unless you want a professional opinion from Rick about a band, which you clearly lack the capacity to undrstand and appreciate.
Same here man , my brain literally explodes everytime I hear them due to their awesomeness. They are something else

Now we've learned how many times Rick can say "Whoo!" in the span of 20 minutes.
Extremely underrated comment
Turns out Rick is a whoo girl...... Never would have guessed it.
Got an idea for a drinking game
"Whoo!"
I was thinking the same thing!
People get inspired with different genre and come up with something legendary in their genre and give the world an epic song, too good, loved the video and Tim is a pure example of consistent hardwork and humbleness.
As much as I love this song, I love that Rick loves it that much more.
This is why i love this series!
Rick just introduced me to an amazing band and beautiful music!
Thanks a lot Rick!
I love how this series is mostly just an excuse for rick to geek out and vibe to his fav music im all here for it
Love your enthusiasm, so much so you’ve got me into these. Loving that album, can’t stop listening to it. Incredible musicians
Heard this intro riff on Paul David's 80 riffs video and I was amazed with the thing that is coming in today's music. The track was killer and its what all in my mind these days. Then the details on this video and how beautifully its composed and arranged along with all those add-ons. Simply amazing. And I appreciate the fact that the band is so open with their work like the main players are actually playing their parts separately, who does that.... Its like we have it played for you guys, go ahead and enjoy the pieces together or separate, your choice..
Shoutout to Tim for posting this on his story
That PRS is a beauty. That color. Wow! Never listened to Polyphia. And to you blockers, this is why Rick’s channel is important. He introduces
the world to your music. I’m now a Polyphia fan, thanks to Rick. 👍
Probably the most beautiful PRS I've ever seen that thing is gorgeous
This gives me hope that guitar-based music has a real future! They say the music we listened to in our formative years sticks with us, but this is different in a really good way. No autotuned pop here! And even though I grew up on the original R&B, this trap sensibility is not lightweight stuff.
Thank you again, Rick. Awesome "breakdown" of G.O.A.T. by Polyphia. I truly enjoy hearing the separate tracks played alone. You do that with almost all of these What Makes This Song Great vids. Getting your hands on the masters (or something close enough to not make a difference) so you can do your thing is .... glorious.
One of my favorite things about the trap influence here is that Phrygian scale modality. In trap music you often hear an emphasis on the scale degrees that are just a half step away from each other. it gives you a really strong pull toward resolution. trap music also works really well in harmonic minor for that reason! Love the theory talk, Rick!
Literally sharing these moments with you, Rick, it just feels like when I used to sit with friends to listen to new songs/albums and enjoy figuring out what they were playing, exchanging ideas and opinions, rewinding over and over... just a pleasure doing it with you. Thanks!
This "What Makes This Song Great" video is one of my absolute favorite music analyses. Thank you Rick for your treasured and immensely thorough and knowledgeable insight on many of the great music artists.
This is just some brilliant stuff. I'm not as old as Rick, but I have been feeling older as I watch so many of my musical heros die over the last ten years. I am really heartened to hear someone bring something really fresh and original to our ears.
I was feeling that interesting new music was getting rarer and farther in between over the last twenty years or so. While this is still true on macro commercial level, there has been SO much going on in prog and metal!
To see musicians like this really rethink things from a different perspective (maybe a Martian one?) is so cool!
I love how they used commonalities in dub step, trap, classical, and flaminco and created something truly unique with it!
Polyphia is a great band, their approach
is very jazz like... what a talented bunch o' youngsters!! Also Rick, are you ever going to make the Dream Theater
"What makes this song great"... It would
be cool if you could break down "Under
A Glass Moon". Thanks Rick, I appreciate every one of these you
present.
Polyphia is like the progressive version of Pop guitar music. Prog pop?
DT?

That intro roll.....
Been waiting on Octavarium for like 4 years now😂😂
@@martinpaddle kinda of get annoyed when people say this. Improvising can occur in lots of different genres. Jazz also has pretty specific harmonic language and sound. Something otherwise would be classified as jazz influenced
@@martinpaddle listen to 40Oz by these guys and tell me there's no jazz influence in there
As a guitarist, I always loved the guitar parts in this song. This video made me really appreciate the rhythm section in this band. The whole band is just so talented
Thank you for highlighting this band, the level of precision these musicians demonstrate is unreal. I will definitely be checking them out!
Music is the best thing we got going for us.
I'm old. Never heard of this before, but I'm blown away. Indeed it does sound like the future has arrived. Brilliant video, thanks for featuring them!
It sounds like crap. As I posted in another comment, all technicality, zero soul. This crap stinks.

Absolutely correct!
A customer service rep just mentioned these guys to me an hour ago & I AM IMPRESSED!!!! So unorthodox & clearly special. How it seems like ai with soul. What a superb group😲. Excellent breakdown making it more accessible Mr. Beato👍🏻
Just when I thought I couldn’t appreciate this song any more than I already do you break this masterpiece down and take to new levels! Thank you Rick🤘
