Harry, I see you are based at Middlemore hospital in Auckland. I am just wondering if you have any classes at Grafton campus in your 4th and 5th year as these are clinical years and as many students from the UOA might be all over the North Island (i.e. Whangarei, Tauranga. Hamilton etc.)? Also, do you have to do any rural postings in your 4th and 5th year? Apart from Internal Medicine what are the other postings (i.e. General Surgery, Psychiatry, Geriatrics etc.) that you been assigned for your 4th and 5th year? Also, do you have a choice or preference as to what specialties of medicine or surgery that you want to work in during years 4 and 5? Thanks for your input.

      1. We only have 4 weeks of lectures in total in 4th and 5th year at Grafton campus + some random tutorials from time to time.
      2. You have the option to do a full rural year in 5th year or a 2-week rural GP placement in 4th year.
      3. Pretty much all the major specialties (I won't list all of them but there is around 15 in total).
      4. You don't have a choice as everyone does the same placements, but in 5th year you have a 5- week selective placement that you can choose whatever you want to do.
      Hope it helps!

@@HarryTheAdventurer Thanks for the reply Harry. How long in duration are these placements? I see that you have mentioned that years 4 and 5 students need to cover 15 specialties so I guess these placements are around 4-6 weeks in duration. Also, are you based entirely in Auckland at the same hospital for years 4 and 5 or do you get posted to a city beside Auckland in year 5?

@@punterjac8695 1. Ranging between 2 weeks up to 6 weeks.
      2. You get to put in preferences of which hospital in 4th and 5th year and yes 4th year is the same hospital and 5th year you might have to go somewhere else for placements.
      Hope it helped lots!!

@@HarryTheAdventurer Thanks for the valuable info. Based on what you have said am I correct in assuming that in years 4 and 5 most of the examinations/assessments are now based solely on hospital placements (with the exemption of professional development modules and communication skills etc.) rather than formal examinations conducted at the end of Semester 1 and 2 that you had to undertake for years 2 and 3? So now, I assume, you are being assessed by hospital consultant doctors or senior registrars for around 8 specialties each year for two years (15 specialties in total for years 4 and 5) rather than your teachers from the medical school? I see that all this training is preparation for the Trainee Intern role in year 6.

@@punterjac8695 1. Roughly half of the assessments are based on hospital placements, assessed by senior doctors while roughly the other half consists of formal OSCEs and progress tests 3x/year at medical school.

Are you from the UK? You sound mildly British.

I used to live there when I was small - coming to the UK for a medical elective in 2024 so looking forward to be back!
