Heat is necessary but at the same time, heat it's the enemy. Too much heat or heating time, pads can be broken and other components can move out of place. Sometimes people with a lot of experience can do things in a certain way with certain tools and still end up with good results. But, people with short experience doing it that way can lead this procedure as a nightmare.

Tip: You should clear the holes with the copper wick for easier connector placement and minimize the heating exposure time. The pin alignment is more important than the holding legs. Depending on the board, if any plastic or close surface mount parts are too close, cover it with some material to shield the direct heat. I like to have the connector in place and secured, with the pins perfectly aligned, then apply some air heat to the pins. Once the pins are soldered in place, then I solder each of the support legs with the iron. By doing that, normally you do not need touchup and guarantee each pin is flat on the board. But if touchup's is necessary, I do recommend the iron have a smaller tip and without additional solder paste, reheat each pin. It's too risky to pass that bigger tip iron across touching multiple pins with solder. If you are not careful, not only create easy bridges, by removing those bridges, that iron that size can transfer too much heat and damage the pads under. If you do not have too much experience, find an old board and do a practice test.

True, at this point I probably rely on better equipment just a tad more than I used to in the past. Temperature is much more controlled and reliable with my current setup. But that was not always the case for me and I soldered with a much cheaper rework station and iron. During those years Kapton tape was my best friend and used on nearly every project. Same with alignment, much easier to get pins lined up directly over pads with a 200x magnification on my side. Heat is a friend and enemy if this is an early project for anyone, start with low heat and work your way up to a setting that works for you. The Technician has great points in his comment, I appreciate the time taken to point them out. Always tread carefully when working on expensive motherboards!

The best tip whatever your equipment…practice on junk boards and get to know your equipment. Never try something like this without some practice on removing / replacing plastic connectors on things that don’t matter.

I've had two ps5's fail without any outside trauma. I sometimes had to just lightly touch the hdmi cable in order to to allow it to work. After replacing the cables , (data not charge) it yielded the same result. So instead of replacing the hdmi cap, ic encoder etc... I decided to try and replace the port for experience and I must of watched 20 videos of others doing it and I couldn't find a single one that had sound doctrine or specified what correct items needed to properly diagnose and repair the system correctly, until I found yours. Excellent video and instructions. You handled it like a BOSS! Thanks so very much for putting your video online. It's extremely beneficial for many people looking to do it correctly. Great job!

t what about these other small components with thermal paste? Is it possible to change that thermal paste? My PS5 is heating up even after changing the cooler, so I am sort of guessing these small thermal paste over these components is fried or something, their texture look a bit dry. But what is heating up are the side parts until the heat get to the front USB which I believe isn't good for the overall hardware even though the CPU isn't giving a heat warning.

i noticed it took a long time today when I did a hdmi desolder on a test ps5 board. Heating from the back, kapton over the diodes on the back. it did come out, with no pads pulled. But man it took forever i was afraid i was gonna damage it. Your technique of heating from the top... I almost tried that today but I was worried about those small caps around the pins. Now that i see it can be done i may experiment with that approach too. Thanks for the good video.

That's unfortunate, unfortunately it does look like a lot of your pad connections have been removed. In order to fix that you would have to find replacements for the components that have gone missing, then attach those to the broken traces with some micro-wire. I'll be honest this is a tricky one to work back from.

Nowadays, no one company manufactures things to last. PS, Xbox, Nintendo, all fail and is unacceptable that they die in less than 1 year of use, and regarding to Gamepads/controllers are, even worst. Planned obsolescence?

    • @GamestoreAF

Planned obsolescence i.e. encoder chips blocking you from swapping parts. There would be a shitload more of these in circulation of hot swapping parts was possible. So why go out of your way to prevent that? If the console lasted 10 years, great, but they barley last 2. Its a shame. I dont know why we have to buy the arcade but still have to put in someone elses tokens.
