The is just the video I was looking for, lots of explanation, use cases and real-world examples. Thanks for taking the time! You cannot create a video like this without a full understanding of the material! You are on a different level.
Bang on the money Steve. Being using VMW for years, but always good to have a refresh. Every days a school day regardless of how long you have being doing something. Thanks for the time and effort Steve, clear and concise.
This is BY FAR the best instructional video I have ever seen on VMware networking (virtual switches, VLANs, etc.). I really learned a great deal. I've been using VMware for 4 years and I've always been confused about the networking aspect; until now. I like how you explained almost every single feature or setting, and the diagrams really helped (visual is usually better for learning). I can't wait to learn more!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I certainly learned a lot and you earned my sub. As a new Sub, might I suggest 1080p or better quality for your videos? 720p was pretty grainy and hard on the eyes. Look forward to the next one! Thanks again!
Thanks for watching and Subscribing. YAh I messed up on this one, and someone pointed it out. The other videos are in 1080. If I remove the video and redo it, I loose all the analytics for it.. Thanks again and have a good one..
Thank u very,🙏 clear explanation.. keep your support please upload mor concepts like patch update..,vcenter migration, snapshot, build, commission, decommissioning..etc thanks for your support.
Question - In case of VST, How a link between vmnic1 & switch trunk port able to handle Multiple VLANs traffic, as we make only switch port as truck port ? Do we need to make any changes on vmnic1 ?
Good question. With VST. All you need to do is specify the VLAN for each port group. I would imagine the uplink internally knows that is has to pass these VLAN.s Have a good one.
Super informative. I had not found 'vsphere switch vlan config' this good on any other source. Thanks. Have a doubt. What will be the vlan info on the portgroups in case of EST VST : PG will have vlan id VGT : PG will have 4095/range of vlans EST : ? Thanks in advance. 1 suggestion, video resolution is 720P, slides look slight blurry.
Thanks so much for the info.. I did not notice that some of my videos were at SD quality. Looks like something changed in my Power Director settings. I have resolved the issue moving forward. As for your question On Standard Switches set it to "None 0" On vSphere Distributed Switches Set it to "None". Thanks again and have a good one.
Thanks for watching. The mode should be set to "ON" I am assuming you are using a standard switch. See this article. knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?legacyId=1001938
Hi Steven, do I need to create two virtual NICs bridged to a physical NIC on my home desktop using the VMware Network Editor to simulate a scenario with two physical NICs for two uplinks on a vDS? Thanks!
Yes You can. Create the VM in Workstation and give it as many nics as you like, you can then bridge it the physical nic in the host if you want it to talk to the outside world. Have a great day
Hi and ty for the excellent video. A simple question i have is that are we able to connect the VMware virtual switches to an SDN controller like ONOS etc?
To be perfectly honest, I have never worked with that product, so I am not sure. I don' think you can use it to manage vSphere Virtual Switches.. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
Hi. So you can create a 2nd switch but it will have no nic (uplink) assign to it. Therefore any VM's connected to it, will only be able to talk to each other on that host and not to the outside world.. Also remember, you don't assign IP's to the switches, Vmkernel ports and VM's get IIP's.. Can you provide provide more info on what exactly you want to achieve?? Thanks for watching and have a great day...
Does the LACP hashing algorithm have to match between distributed switch and physical switch? I have a Juniper EX4300 switch and it does hashing based on mac/ip/tcp-port all together and doesn’t allow to change the hashing algorithm.
Hi, great video, thanks! Is it possible to migrate from a standard switch to a distributed switch using only one NIC card? I am concerned about losing connectivity during the move from standard to distributed switch or even if this is possible! [Edit] I got it to work. I was able to use the "add host" wizard to add all my hosts *except* the host with VC VM. But, I was able to migrate the VC VM to another host (that was already with the new DVS + uplink) and then add the host successfully. All ok, now :)
Glad you sorted it out.. Nothing like some hands on experience. I was going to suggest a vmotion, but I don't know your exact config... Have a good one. Make sure you backup you vCenter server and the Distributed switch
Thank for video, i have question, now i have 1 server install esxi and 3 vm machine on esxi, 1 physical switch create vlan 50 and port trunk on switch, on esxi creat vswitch with vlan id 50 connect to port trunk on physical switch - vm machine on esxi can ping outside with ip range vlan50, but vm machine can not connect internet That why, may i config corect? Thanks
So the vswitch that is connected to the uplink NIC. Make sure the nic is connected to the physical switch port that is configured as a trunk and carrying VLAN 50 and any other vlans.. Check to make sure the VM's can ping their default gateway.. If the can - it may me a routing issue.. check your router to make sure it know how to get to the vlan 50 subnet . Hope this help. Have a great day
Sorry.. I have not used any books to learn the product, so can;t really make an informed recommendation.. The VMware Official courses is what I have used (being a Certified instructor) but they can be expensive.. Have a good one
So trunbks are configured on Layer 3 devices (Layer 3 of the OSI Model). So if your switch is only Layer 2, then you do it on your router.. Most enterprise grade witched are Layer 2 and 3.. You will need to see which one you have.. Thanks for watching and have a great day....

I agree good video. Getting certified
One of the best video about vss and vds ever
Thanks for the kind comment. You have a great day...

Fantastic video! I just started with VM and learned a lot. I'm still watching every day. The real-life scenarios explained are wonderful, sir.
Great to hear! You have a great day
very good video for understanding the networking of Vsphere architecture
Thank you

Thank you for this video. It was really educating for me

very nice video. Cleared about VDS nicely.
Thanks and welcome. Have a great day
Good content and good videos!! Any chance can have the PowerPoint presentation? I intend to educate my colleagues on VMware
Thanks for watching. As for the PPT I am currently keeping them in house, as I may have a few things I am going to do in the future, Have a good one.

excellent lecture delivery. Thank you

Thank you for this video. I'm wondering something. Can VMs on different Port Goups or vSwitches communicate directly? And there are no VLANs...
Yes you can! IF you are not doing VGT or VST.. Have a good one
Excellent, thank you.
Thanks for watching. Have a great day
What should be the LACP mode (ON or active) configuration required at physical switch incase we use ‘Route based on IP hash’?
Thanks for watching. The mode should be set to "ON" I am assuming you are using a standard switch. See this article. knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?legacyId=1001938

Unfortunately they have to match.. Check out this KB at VMWare. kb.vmware.com/s/article/2034277
