Cool video. My take on guitars is its all in the set up and good strings and Amp of course. I have very expensive gibson's, Middle of the road Eastmen a real cool old Fender and a fender copy, and I would gig on any one of them.

KKR owns the brand. It is a financial investment firm. Often brand names are licensed to firms so they can use the brand name on their products. Hopefully, KKR likes guitars; and will sell or license quality manufacturing firms to keep making musical instruments.Feb 4, 2023

My 2017 Gibson Les Paul Tribute is also a gem. Neck is fantastic, sounds great and stays in tune so well. Bought it new in ‘17 for $850 and still believe it’s the best overall value I’ve ever gotten. I have Strats and Tele as well (which I also love) but this LP is a keeper.

I have the same year Tribute (Faded Honey Burst) that I bought in 2017 on sale as a floor model for ~$750. Great guitar that has it all except for the fancy adornments. I will say we both scored a couple of excellent guitars at a nice low price.
As for the Gibson cork sniffers they can stay in their little circle jerk world and gloat about how wonderful they are.

There’s a few more differences. Studios have thinner bodies. That’s why they’re lighter. Depending on year, standards also often have Grover tuners as opposed to the Kluson style tuners. Studios tend to have a screen printed logo while the standards have the mother of pearl logo. Neck profile also varies depending on year and model (50s vs 60s). Pickups also vary from year to year on the standards. The wiring has varied through the years on the standards and the studios.
Gibson has had various studio and standard models throughout the years so many of the characteristics vary from year to year.
I like both the studio and the standard. I tend to gig with my Signature T and bring a studio as my backup guitar.

You are correct! There can be a lot of variables even with in each mode depending on years.

I'm not a huge Les Paul fan (or a Gibson fan except for the SG, and pretty much all Gibson pickups - but not Gibson corporate) but that one is absolutely gorgeous. Not book matched of course and a little more flame than I like - I prefer a nice plain top - but gorgeous. Much as I love cherry bursts, this one is prettier to me. Sounds great too. And yeah, we tend to listen with our eyes.

I've got a studio gem series I bought in the 90's. That thing is heavy as heck. I can't handle that kind of weight anymore. Last year I bought a new LP modern because I wanted something with some weight relief. It's 8 lbs 2 oz. Much nicer on the back. I don't have a very large collection of guitars. My oldest is a 72 telecaster I bought used in 1975. It's also a boat anchor.

Mine is a non-weight relief 4.2kg, 2001 Yamano era, wine red, not a plus top, but the crazy top flame Trogly calls it, with gold hardware of course. It's an ordinary sale item I bought in Tokyo in 2002, but it's a special Studio to me. Yes, the Studio body is 5mm thinner than the Standard, thanks.

Great video. 👍 Love it or hate it: the new LP modern lite is amazing, I think. Paper thin, like an SG. All mahogany/no cap, satin, dots, etc. Retail for $1500, but I've been eyeing a brand new gold/silver lookin one at GC for $800. Think everyone hates em, so I dig em... Love studios, esp. Wine red on any Gibson. 90's era Gibson is great quality, if you find a fair price. I love the vintage Greco, Burny, Tokai, Epiphone Elite/Elitist, etc. Japanese knockoffs, but they're coming up too. Lots of other budget options/rabbit holes, depending on your definition or scope of brands...

The conversation you are referencing is buried in a mountain of replies to another comment. But since you made a more recent comment that will show closer to the top of the feed..... here's where i left it off. Holding companies vs Parent companies. Subsidiary companies can in fact OWN their own Subsidiaries. Several levels in fact. 1st tier, 2nd tier etc. So even if a Holding Company owns a majority share (or even all) of Gibson Inc. that does not mean Gibson Inc does not have it's own subsidiary companies. Which it does. Including Epiphone. The point is... when Epiphone (subsidary of Gibson Inc) does well financially, Gibson benefits. Because Gibson runs Epiphone.... Are you telling me Joseph BAe and Scott Nuttall are running Epiphone? or is Cesar ultimatly deciding what should happen with Epiphone models...That are budget friendly versions of Gibson models for people on limited budgets? Who's making the marketing decisions for Epiphone. It sure looks like it's gibsons leadership. Why are you so fired up about it? Does it aggrevate you when people buy a Gibson and Enjoy it? I've played guitars that blow Gibson away. I've played guitars that blow epiphones away. Original point coming full circle...... People are still buying Gibsons in 2024. I know a few. I bought both. What's wrong with that? I like my epiphones for what they are, and I like my specific Gibsons for what they are. I've played EPI's that were nice and some that were crap. Same with the Gibsons. There are Gems and Duds everywhere with ALMOST every brand.

Why because like it was said people are now researching what you content creators are claiming only to find out the majority of the time you're lying or you have zero clue and you speculating and assuming not a good thing to do Ryan the bottom line is since JC Curliegh Restored Epiphone in 2019/2020 it was the beginning of the end for Gibson and the lawsuit failures didn't help Gibson is not doing well in sales and stores are admitting this also Epiphone smoked Gibson back in the day and there doing it again today the buddy and no matter how you want to twist around things or hope for Gibson it's not working or now will it ever work and this Chinese thing the Quingdao epiphone facility is completely American owned and operated by Gibson Epiphone USA they have American and Asian luthiers and only Epiphones are made there with Epiphones made 70% by hand..so the American owned and operated building sits on Asian land and that's where it ends 👍

I love early 90's Les Pauls. I bought my first (a 1990) in '91 brand new. So I am in a way biased to call these great guitars. For me. Turns out I'm not the only one these days anymore. I also use 2 1993's Standard and Studio models. They are awesome. Will never let go of them. Then I got a '96 Winered Standard. It's my workhorse. And everytime I use it live people wanna know about it cos 'that guitar sounded great' Weights on all foremented guitars are more oe less the same but strangely enough they got a bit ligjter with age. Wood is never really dead? Probably. Thing is: I'm happy with the sound I get out of them. I'm used to it. They're part of my set up. And it works. No BS. Guitar, cable, Dual Rec. And straight Marshall run of the mill 1960 cab.

Though that top is beautiful, I'm honestly not too great of a fan of the way they finished them during the later years of the previous Gibson leadership era. That "outline" finish just doesn't do it for me. A burst should have a distinct teardrop in the middle of the base finish. But, that's just my take. Your new one sounds fabulous and I actually think it was the best of the three clean. When the tone gets muddied up a bit, both LPs don't seem to sound much different.

The Studio is hands down the best looking one of the bunch. The black bits on the wine red doesn't look good to me compared to cream bits on wine red, it makes so much difference its not even an option to me. That standard LP with the cream binding would really wake up and pop if converted to cream bits, trust me, you should give it a go and see.

I've got my p90s Special (TV Yellow of course!) slung over my shoulder at this very moment. I've been rotating guitars all day today. On any given day, week, or month, one speaks to you more than another - and then your ears/brain change! Lol
What's funny is that I have a weight-relived Classic, and Standard that's not weight-relieved, and they weigh about the same. Lol
They have the same specs for the most part (same 60s Burstbucker pickups, mahogany/maple, neck profile, tuners, the whole thing). Really, the only difference between them comes down to PCB circuit board on the Classic that adds some options. I was CERTAIN that I would toss the circuitboard quickly. NO. not happening now. As stated, on a Les Paul day, and on any given day, I prefer one over the other. Funny how our ears (brain really) change wildly.

    Nice LP Studio.
The big issues with LP Studios are that the Collectors tend to be purists and those guys like binding, solid bodies sans weight relief, and no wonky electronics. Studios have TYPICALLY always had push pull coil splits. Now a days Studios have more than that, they have Push/pull coil splits, the middle pickups out of phase, and lead humbucker tone bypass. Beyond all that, for a short time Studios were the first guitars to get Richlight Fingerboards though every model followed suit. The pickups are also an issue as the Studios typically got the 490R/T where as the Standards TYPICALLY have either had Burstbuckers or Classic 57's. The 490 series isn't the most popular set in Gibson history. Of course the biggest thing is the physical construction, Studios were always thinner than regular LP's but not as thin as the LP Lites. Personally I actually like the 2 cheaper LP's: the Studio and Classic. No fancy tops, no binding, just great sounding guitars that don't set you back the price of the Standards. As to the Explorers with neck binding, yeah that's on the new 2023 and 24 70's reissue model. Having seen a number of 76 -78 Explorers, none of them had binding. The 84 Explorers didn't either.
As to which sounded the best? Sorry man, but to me it was the Explorer. Of the 2 Pauls, through my over the ear headset, I honestly couldn't tell any difference. Best of luck.

    • @RNAMusic
      @RNAMusic  7 місяців тому

The explorer was hotter for sure. Different pickups, but the pickup height may have been different too. Thanks for your comment and perspective!

No one really needs anything more then a les Paul studio with regular specs w/ a rosewood or ebony neck.
Binding should not double the price. You are not doubling the performance at all. Studios are a little less portentous especially if your a mid level player. Owned a bunch of Gibsons and my favorite has been my 06 white studio with ebony board

If music is the most important thing to a player, sound quality, tone, etc...like everyone says. Then why do we worry so much about the value of our gear. They're tools to make music. To me, if it plays the best, sounds the best, then thats what Im using. I would have no issue using a "Studio" version over a Standard or Custom if it was in fact a better guitar.

you are right! I have a lot of guitars currently. My Favorites on any given day aren't always the USA ones. depends on the day sometimes. Tools are just tools!

Garbage comment. Gibson(overall) is better than Epiphone. I'm extremely tired of hearing people say the opposite online. It's simply not true. And if you're going to buy an Epiphone, you may as well consider buying about a dozen other made-in-Asia guitars because there are others which are even better than Epiphone.

@@Joe-mz6dc Gibson is a joke no one wants them anymore buddy it's all epiphone now whether you like it or not should have known once JC Curliegh Restored Epiphone back to premium in 2019/2020 it was over for Gibson epiphone rules now over Gibson just like they did back in the good o'l days and it's going to stay that way no one cares what any GIBSON fanboys says or thinks
