Seriously the professionalism of these videos are just wow. I have no idea why this channel is not bigger, hopefully it will keep growing you of all people deserve it!
Hey Damo, Firstly THANK YOU for all of the great info! I watch your videos almost every morning and they get me in the right frame of mind for the 'office'. Whilst my latest album was getting printed i asked my fb friends to buy a £10 raffle ticket- every entry gotta signed album when it came out. And the winner got my band to play at their house, wedding, pub etc... it almost funded the whole album. You get a faor bit of credit for that. Thankyou
You're definitely right about working with bands being a headache. Although they often speak about "making it" etc, very few of them are even willing to pick up the phone let alone, show up for marketing meetings, video shoots, podcast recordings etc. It's like they're waiting for the music gods to just drop success off on their doorsteps.
YO Damo! One money making idea that I came up with: As a music artist, I am always very curious about the meaning of my favorite musicians lyrics, yet am usually left with at best some random internet users' opinion of the interpretation rather than the actual musicartist's own in-depth peek into their mind. So, I wanted to create a lyric book where I write in depth about what the lyrics mean to me and how they fit into my life and energies. I could add art to go along with each song. I feel like any legitimate fan would probably be at least interested.
@@name-yl2ck Thanks so much! 🙏 I already sorta know what I wish my favourite music artists offered, so I can just translate those wishes into my own music and hopefully have that much more impact 🙏💓🌍☮️
Hey Damian, first of all, thanks so much for your amazing channel. I recently discovered you and have watched your videos on how it's basically a waste of time and money to release an album these days. I agree with you, and now I'd like to release the songs I had ready for my album as a series of singles, as you suggested. However, my plan before was to do a Kickstarter (as you mentioned in this video) to raise money to make that album. Do you have any tips on how to market a Kickstarter when it's NOT an album? I have this feeling that my supporters (who are in the 35-60 year old age bracket) would be more likely to get behind an ALBUM... Any tips on how to go about this? Thanks for your time! Leanna
Amazing thank you so much! They are now one of my favourite bands. Their Social media is amazing and they work so hard. The live show is the best Ive seen! 🙂 Im a fan!
My roommate is a busker. He has a one man band doing bluegrass/gypsy jazz. He pays his bills with it, but it's a daily hustle and he sometimes struggles. It's doable, but it's not easy.
Tip 5 about merchandise stood out. When the 'Hello Kitty' brand appeared at first it just seemed like a fad for the kids. But then it everywhere. The brand's actual logo/graphic is oh so simple a design. But it became successful beyond kids market because the company made cool by gearing the logo and tweaking throughout the festive periods. So you Halloween kitty and Xmas kitty etc. The brand logo appeared on lunch boxes, buttons, t-shirts and so on. So yep, merchandise is a biggy.
As usual all good advice Damo, I’m curious what a musician/band could actually market on instagram though. Fashion and makeup I can understand, as instagram is very visual, but what products could a band or musician promote? (Could be wrong but I don’t think for example guitar related gear companies like Ernie Ball use these little influencers as they have big artist endorsees already)
Hey dude, great to see you. Social media is getting so pay to play that organic reach is proving harder.. While I see this as changing at some point, right now it's about advertsing stuff and Insta and Facebook are amazing at this. So outside of influencer marketing I would use Instagram as a platform to sell tickets and merch etc but not in the feed, just a dedicated ad spend for it.
This is THE best video for all musicians who want to increase their income, what a gold mine of information. WHY HAS THIS NOT GOT 2 MILLION VIEWS. CALLING ALL MUSICIANS, GET LISTENING TO THIS DUDE NOW. Arise Sir Damo
If i could get people to actually form a band with me, yeah. Everyone where im fromplays music, but it seems, like everyone just goes it alone. Singer songwriter epidemic here.
I have an acoustic band in Las Vegas - "Manzanita". We do both originals and covers, because of the venues we play at. However, I got in touch with a nearby city to Las Vegas, Henderson, and I contacted the Park & Rec Department. I found out who to speak to about any events that they were hiring bands for. Well, they had just cleaned up a major street in Henderson, "Water Street" and to help the businesses all along Water Street, they started what is called: "The Friday Night Music Series". And they wanted particularly, bands that could play their own material. I am the guitarist, percussionist and writer of the original songs in the band. And we have now played this "series" 3 times and then my same contact hired us for their yearly Art Festival where they close down Water Street and have bands playing. The Friday night gigs are for two hours and pay $300 US dollars, but for the Art Festival (amazing!!!) we were paid $500 US for get this a 1 hour performance! And given that Manzanita is a four-piece band, for that Art Festival, we made some very good money! Here's a further couple of tips. They kept hiring us even though they want to give other bands a"chance" because and even told me that we were one of the easiest bands to work with - got all our contracts etc. in ahead of time and my contact raved about the fact that I MAILED her a thank you card after our final performance of the first part of 2022, for hiring us! I also contacted another close city - Boulder City about their yearly "Best Damn BBQ" event which draws tons of people. Now, this one paid low - just a gas stipend $100 US, but with the exposure we got - worth it. AND, here's what happens when you deal with your contacts effectively and politely. She got a cancellation, so we not only got to play on the main stage on Saturday, but also Friday as well! I would love to be a guest on your program to share more tips as well. I have been a performing musician for over 50 years! Brian - bgardner2323@yahoo.com
This is great info! Thanks for sharing! I’ll start by shamelessly plugging my band Love Songs For Junkies! We’re a punk rock/rock n roll band, we released our 2nd album earlier this year! You can stream us on Spotify, get our albums on iTunes, follow us on Instagram @lsfj_band and on Facebook!!
Hey Kids and Millennials out there trying to make some money from music. Wake up! Spotify, UA-cam, Patreon, web based merch sales and the funding sites were founded by folks who want to fleece young people. Most of these were started by millennials who want to take advantage of struggling people in a gig economy. A strategy where you are using 6 or 7 of these sources that take your content and work and make more money than you are a bad idea. If you are just getting started, go downtown and do some busking - find a cute little kid or your most charming attractive friend to hold an instrument even if they don't play. You'll make more money on a summer weekend afternoon than you will in ten years on Spotify and UA-cam. Find a bar or restaurant and work at becoming their house band. Don't quit your day job. Remember to have fun.
SeadartVSG hey dude, with respect, I honestly don’t agree. This is old school and looking at today’s methods and consumption with a negative outlook. We’re in a time where we the artists and creators have more control than ever as long as we’re willing to Change the way we think and stop trying to live through old traditions. It might feel scary because things have changed but the rules have changed and when you play the new game it’s so so much better and more fun!
I don't know, but for some reason I did not like this video. It so depressing to see that musicians have to take their inspirations or business management deals from cheeky UA-camrs. It all seems to boil down to this, value . What value are you bringing to your fans.
Seriously the professionalism of these videos are just wow. I have no idea why this channel is not bigger, hopefully it will keep growing you of all people deserve it!
Exactly my thoughts too!
Agreed 💯‼️

Dave McKay hey Dave what music are you into and where do you live?
"You guys are a @$%^#&* nightmare!" Funny, and sadly true. It's like herding cats (that belong to someone else).
Damo - it's pronounced "Are-kells"
Commercial covers band? Is that what you’re saying?
Cobey Brown It’s one of the potentials.. would you agree?
Damian Keyes To be honest I’m not totally sure what that is
Damian Keyes By that do you mean just like a cover band that does only covers??
Yeah, basically it's what my family calls a top 40 band. They play only the hits.
Band camp is something a lot of indie bands use as well, dont know much about it but apparently it's good to get your name out there
