I am Russophile with Russian family connection (marriage and children).
Thank you for realising there is much more to the song. It goes back to a story of a Cossack officer before a battle.
There is much deep connection with art in Russia. There is a character of sacrifice in Russian history that leads art to reflect sometimes sombre and sad stories. This is seen in paintings and literature and of course, oral folk tradition.
Too many people in UK have an unfair negative view of Russia. There is much to the culture and a deep rooted pride in their history.
Thank you for recognising so much and giving an open reception to this music and culture.

A small sleep in the afternoon brought the Cossack a dream with a horse playing under him, that is, nervous before the upcoming, possibly tomorrow, battle, suddenly blowing evil winds from the east tear off the cap from his head, waking up the Cossack feels the incomprehensible significance of the dream, with which he refers in particular to to his esaul (the commander of his military unit), who is the only one whose explanation of the dream the Cossack feels is correct, namely, that in the upcoming battle the Cossack will die, or rather, will lose his head in the literal sense, because the Cossacks were cut with sabers at that time, that is, the cap torn off by an evil wind is his head, which will be cut off in the upcoming battle.

Hello. The public in Russia has great respect for folk music songs and performances of talented singers. In this performance of Pelagia, there are several factors that can cause tears. Pelageya is a favorite Russian singer with a beautiful voice that primarily evokes feelings. The second factor is nostalgia, history, and the underlying meaning of the song. The third factor-the melodies of Russian songs - are soulful sounds that affect the strings of the soul. The lyrics of the song touch on the carefree, violent nature of a young Cossack who, in the heat of excitement, could easily lose his life without thinking about its value. His boss guessed that with such a character, he could lose his life, lose his head. The dream seemed to predict that a violent wind from the east had torn off his cap. His boss says that the dream tells you that the hat torn off your head can be your death in the next battle with the enemies.
Girls cry listening to such songs. They are very sorry that young people do not value their lives and go carefree heroes from life. A person from Russia does not value his personal life to a greater extent. The social organism is of great value, and people are ready to give their lives and their youth in battle for it, if it is a question of war and the defense of their homeland. Russians are patriotic and do not consider the fact that some fatal mistake can lead to a fatal outcome. Some carelessly give their lives, others are very sorry and cry about it, of course, seeing in the characters of their heroes.

      @Grigo100 3 роки тому +2

To better understand the character of the Russian person, you just need to know that in the blood of those who were born in Russia, this is freedom, liberation, and everyone sees himself as the savior of others at the cost of the sacrifice of his life. Sometimes this character goes crazy in a competition about who is more worthy to be the savior. People openly organize a contest for the title of savior of almost all of humanity. And if it concerns Russia, then here this madness is off the scale by all degrees. Such a mission is in the blood of the Russians. Therefore, other peoples do not understand the Russian Soul. The songs reflect this character of the hero savior, who is careless and does not think about his personal life.

Thank you for the video and for your questions about it. I read the previous comments and I will say what I did not find in them. Let's start with the fact that the correct pronunciation of the singer's name sounds at the end of the video that you just reacted to, look again. What you took for a crown is an element of traditional Russian (ethnic) women's clothing. Today Pelageya is the best performer of Russian folk. Her vocals are essentially the quintessence of performing traditional Russian female singing. What can not be said about music - too much of what in Russian folk should not be. But this is a minor omission, because for Russian folk, music does not play any role at all. Only the words and the meaning they carry. The words of this song speak of the nearness of death and the despair it brings. And Pelageya, like no one else, can convey this meaning.

    A bit of context:
    This is a Cossack song.
A song about a premonition of imminent death in battle.
translation into English is very rough, and cannot convey all the nuances of words and expressions.
The hero of the song slept badly and dreamed that his faithful Horse began to behave inadequately (he felt trouble) and "evil winds" flew (Zloi - can be used as too strong, evil, spiteful, angry)
the "evil wind" (angry/strong winds) blew from the east.
An indication of the side means the direction, the source of impending danger (from there the enemies will come and there will be a battle)
these winds tore off the cap from the head.
Such a dream is a premonition of trouble. The hero told the commander about this dream.
The commander was smart, and he figured out the meaning of the dream, and said that this dream means that an enemy will come from the east and your head will be cut off in battle.
"there is no way for you to stay with your head on your shoulders" like that.
then the first verse is repeated, which says that the hero slept badly and had a dream. (But now we have the context of what we know why he slept badly. And it also becomes restless, because this terrible premonition and prediction has not yet come true)
