Thanks Bob, Larrie added a whole new sound to Elvis' concets. I met Larrie once after an Everly Bros. concert. A great, great drummer and a heck of a nice guy.
I have some of those charts . He did the first album of a Canadian band called Fosterchild in 1977 .I was there for the sessions and he gave me the charts when things were done. I recorded the next two albums. He sure showed me the way !
I played in a country band in the early 90's and our drummer was a UNT student and was at the drum clinic Larry was giving when he passed away. He was and still is a Legend!
Larry on Journey's Raised on Radio is epic time keeping...I mean nailing the click...Jon Cain (who is a meter hound) said Larry was THE BEST, and that is after working w/Steve Smith!
Ike Turner used to change things all the time and you had to pay attention to him, especially his feet. I had programmed all the set tempos into my Rhythm Watch and at rehearsal on a daily basis he'd change it so I adopted the "Follow the guy who writes your check" approach. Don't ever take your eye off the person who gives you your check, LOL! Many reasons but the most important one is "they can never say you weren't paying attention".
A lot of that seemed fabricated. I cut my teeth on Elvis and Ronnie Tutt when I was learning to play drums and Elvis never did karate moves on See See Rider. It sounds like Larrie wasn’t a good fit with the TCB band because he’s a sight reader/session player and playing an Elvis live show was all about watching Elvis and following him. Elvis wanted the drums to accent his moves. Ronnie described it like playing drums behind a stripper and you can’t do that without knowing the show. You can’t expect to sight read and pull that off. Sounds like both Elvis and Larrie became frustrated with each other.
@@devinw5150 You know what I was thinking exactly the same and what do you want music for those songs. On vids you never saw Ronnie Tutt reading dots. That would have been crazy. Can you imagine Steve whatever who replaced Charlie Watts using dots How about Kieth Moon or Buddy Rich reading music.
There's video and full audio of the show Larrie's talking about. Elvis, March 17, 1976, Johnson City, TN. I liked what Larrie brought to the table. His double bass work was awesome. He just had to get familiar with the routine so there's a different feel to this show as far as the drum work.
When Jerry Scheff the bassist left the tour for a couple years you could tell the TCB ban suffered really bad in terms of sync and quality of player but surprisingly when Tutt left the band was still tight and in sync and Larry Londin is the reason thankfully when Londin was in the band Scheff came back so they still had a grade A band and they sounded absolutely amazing.
Not many drummers could do a subbing gig for Elvis and Larrie obviously did the best he could because he’s a professional but you could definitely tell when Ronnie Tutt was absent. Larrie was primarily a session player so he played the fills and add libs pretty straight forward without much creativity. Tutt played more aggressively and spontaneous with his fills which is the style best suited for live performances. Larrie did a good job considering he was a replacement without much rehearsing but there’s only one Ronnie Tutt and it took me about 10 seconds when I first heard Larrie with Elvis to know it wasn’t Tutt playing the gig.
@@devinw5150 Elvis was blessed with good drummers on the TCB band the On Stage Album has Bob Lanning and he was excellent on the Wonder of You and Polk Salad and those were the definitive versions so yes Tutt was the best both the other guys were no slouches and Elvis used the other 2 on his recording sessions when he could.

I’ve personally met Ronnie several times thru the music business and I specifically asked him why he wasn’t with Elvis in part of 1976/1977 and he told me that he had already signed a contract to play drums for Johnny Winter’s tour. He said that he really hated missing that tour because he could’ve made a lot more money than what he was doing at the time. No death in the family was mentioned
@@devinw5150 Thanks for that piece of info It's now clear . As I say this guy should have sad that he was standing in for Ronnie Tutt. With ref to drum parts I never saw Ronnie looking at any drum parts. He was too busy concentrating on Elvis. All those songs that Elvis sang are easy to follow who needs drum parts any average player could do that.

Read about the band leaving reason been they were no longer impressed they'd been with Elvis for so long they wanted to do other things
