This is the best demonstration I have seen of this braiding technique. Your instructions were clear and easy to understand. Thanks so much, Jill. Cheers, Ardith
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I harvested my first beautiful onion crop last week, and I am very grateful for people like you who share their info with aspiring homesteaders like me!
Thanks so much for putting out this modern tutorial for this old-fashioned technique. I just remembered yesterday while thinking what to do with my onions that in Little House in the Big Woods - they said that there were strings of onions braided by the tops hanging in the attic for winter and that sounded nostalgic and romantic to me . . . and it seems you agree! Again, thanks, I'm going to go pick my onions to start them curing for braids.
Thanks for the video. Looks cool. Question, though: when choosing an onion to use from the vine, does it matter where you grab the onion, like one from the bottom or always from the top or does it matter? Like, if you pull the bottom one off, does the whole thing fall apart?
Thank you for sharing. I had a good year for onions. Its been a long road. LOL. And I want to braid them. I tried some, but they are still a little too green. Will try again after they dry some more.
Here's a 'how to braid onions' write-up if you need a text version! www.theprairiehomestead.com/2015/10/how-to-braid-onions.html
Hi Jill, You didn't tell how to remove the onion from the braid? Do you take from the bottom or top? Or not at all and just separate all at once?
Never mind....a commenter asked that question and you answered Top to down.
I used to watch my Grandmother - now long gone - do this. Thanks for sharing... I'd thought that the technique died with her 😊

Thanks so much Ardith!! :)
In New Mexico, they braid onions, garlic and chiles. They call them ristras and they are very popular. Look them up. They're beautiful.
The way you describe and show how to add the two small ones on the side, it kind of reminds me of a French braid.

Always love your tips in being self sufficient, thank you for the video.. 😊
Thanks so much for watching!

You are very good at braiding those onions. I can tell you have done a lot of them. Thanks for the great video.
Awesome, love this idea and now I can use it for my next crop of onions.

I try to cut them off starting at the top and going down :)
@@theprairiehomestead Thanks!

Awesome. Thanks!
Thanks, I always wondered how they did that!
Thank you so much for that tutorial! I was going to post a photo of mine but I don’t have an option to post photos.
Fancy fancy! Now to grow some onions :)
Excellent!!
Fun, thanks for sharing.
Awesome video, thanks Jill! Do you do garlic the same way then?
Yes-- you can braid garlic the same. :)
@@theprairiehomestead awesome, thank you!
Love it! Any info on storing carrots over the winter, besides freezing??? Thanks!!!
do you have a cold storage in your basement? do you have a video on that somewhere
lovely!
Do you use the starter string to braids in with the onions stocks towards the top?
In what order do you use the onions? Top down? Or bottom up? Do you just cut one off?
I had the same question and saw that she answered it in the comments above - from the top down :)
Where do you purchase your onion starts?
I usually just grab them at the local garden store in the spring. :)
terrible video on the braiding as you do not show the braiding, you only show the front of the onions while you braid BEHIND them???
I wasn’t just me then. When it goes to the shot above, her arm is blocking the vital area and it’s out of focus!
You should have removed the nasty looking skins from the onions. As it is they look like they're inedible.
Here is an idea; Braid your hair and eat onions. food is not made to be played with.
